Jacob Collier / Mathis Picard Improvised Piano Duet At The Blue Note

Ойын-сауық

From June 22 (2:00am) 2017 This is part two of my after hours hang at the Blue Note, NYC. In actuality, it's part one and you're about to learn why. After giving up on my interview with Jacob and leaving the club, I decided I needed one more shot and went back in, resigned to try and ask for a duet. I had been worried he would be too tired, but as I re-entered the club, I saw him walking with his friend, Mathis to the piano. I followed close behind and when they lifted the lid of the Steinway, I said, "Jacob, you mind if I record?" He knew that I had wanted to get something for my KZread channel because of a previous email exchange we had had and he replied, "Of course!" I pressed record. I had no idea that the two of them would play for nearly an hour. They would not have stopped if Jacob's road crew didn't tell him he needed to quit. I think these two could have played all night. They stopped 4 minutes shy of an hour and I asked to finish off the 60 minutes. Thanks again to both of you for allowing me to be part of this epic moment.
Please take time to further check out these two genius musicians. Mathis Picard is a French-Malagasy pianist and lover of all music, living in New York City. He is a graduate of Julliard, and was the youngest finalist ever in the Montreaux Jazz Piano competition at the age of 11. He has shared the stage with Wynton Marsalis, Patti Smith, and many more. Please check his website to know when and where to catch him playing live! www.mathispicard.com/

I don't know how many times I've checked back into this clip, studying tiny phrases over and over and marveling at the collaborative genius between Jacob and Mathis. We have here a post-doctoral course in collective improvisation in a single hour. Mathis is new to me here, but I've been following Jacob for five years since I stumbled on his Looper demo and recommending his work to every fellow musician I meet. Listen to JC's turnaround at the end of the bridge of "Body and Soul" at 25:57. His descending left hand underlines a modulation from C through Db/B, Gb/Bb and Bb7 to the chorus's last 8 in Db. It's classical in quality, and happens so smoothly under Mathis' playful upper voice it makes the head swim. Enough pseudo-critic's chordal analysis. If you've not experienced the entire clip, take it in sections, realizing that all the communication happened through music, not words. There's a lesson here for all of us.

This is my first comment on KZread. I came to say thanks, Aimee. This is freaking magical. Also came to encourage people to go out and be a part of the live music scene. It's so critical to connect with musicians and the community to grow. Especially at the Blue Note where it seems like stuff like this happens all the time: my last visit to it was to see Herbie and Chick do a duet set, which was bonkers. Stayed after hours and saw Cory Henry in an impromptu duet with some college kid doing a late night set. And everyone was nice. Watch live music like your musical life depends on it (I think it does).

Consider how easily language comes out of you to express thoughts. You don't have to consider the construction of individual words as you're speaking them, you likely hardly have to consider the construction of your typical sentence. You've put in a ton of time nailing down each of those aspects of language via Hooked on Phonics and grammar lessons for your entire development, so now all you really have to think about is the intent behind the sentence, what idea you're trying to communicate. These guys have put in those kinds of hours towards mastering connecting notes into chords or melodic fragments (like connecting phonemes into words) by practicing scales and arpeggios, and connecting chords and melodic fragments into phrases (words into sentences) by studying the grammar of music: studying and practicing harmonic progression, voice leading, melodic antecedent/consequent structure, and just actively listening to a ton of people "speak" music who are not only fluent, but incredibly eloquent in this language of the emotions. It really is like learning a language, but a little more like learning 50 languages, given how wildly varied musical genres can be, but perhaps 50 Romance languages, given how much overlap there is in the ideas that underpin most Western genres.

Splendid surprise Aimee! It's been a long way coming. Nothing better than long late night jams. And this is a good one - so far, about ten minutes in. Thanks for documenting it.

16:10 minutes in and it is still reallllllllllllllyyyyy goooooood to listen to!!! :D It's really cool Aimee recorded it, cause it's a cool jam to listen too. And for the fact this was after a show and after a long QnA with people and he's still really into playing music after a big day like that. That is so cool! :D

Wow; I'm very late to this particular party, but I'm really struck by the non-verbal communication between Mathis and Jacob in this video. Its like they've known each other for years. A stellar bit of backstage tomfoolery -- Thanks for this Aimee!

There are certain records I've played so many times that I've thoroughly absorbed the music. I can't help feeling that if I could do that to this piece, my musical pallette would be enriched in beautiful and unpredictable ways. Thank you for capturing this amazing moment. (By the way, I was at Jacob's early show there the previous night. Also incredible.)

Ugh everything about this is so amazing. My favourite part of the whole video is starting at 19:33 ish Mathis quote's Debussy's Claire de Lune, and then at around 19:44 Jacob quotes it as well. That moment just really blew me away. They both clearly have so much knowledge, and they also just groove so well together!

Thank you so much for this all of you and thank you Aimee for all your wonderful contributions to youtube, If I wasn't broke I would definately donate. Those of you that can donate please do. Encourage Aimee to continue to share her wealth of knowledge. Astounding! Bravo!

I love how effortless Collier makes this look. Picard is incredible, but is clearly just making stuff up at times. If I didn't know any better, I would never guess that Jacob is even improvising. Everything is so deliberate and precise!

Aimee Nolte Music: oh my gosh Ty went to see you. Where were you performing? I am sad I missed it. I enjoyed your video with Rick. Wow you do everything... slalom skier as well! I should've figured that watching your proficiency on your skateboarding videos. It's one of the joys of my life unfortunately at 51 I can't carve the way I used to. I'm sure your family is very busy in Chicago but if you find yourself in the Wicker Park area please come by to play my century old parlor grand Steinway I just inherited from my father. It was the piano I learned on and it needs a wonderful tickling from a musician like yourself. Also there's a great music venue called Phyllis' on wood and division that might be having some great music tonight. Are you performing anywhere else in Chicago during your visit? Thanks for reaching out and have a great vacation with your family it looks super fun. I'm taking the four boys and my wife to New Hampshire on a road trip in about two weeks. The boys are all under 5 so I'm a little bit nervous but very excited. BTW, I'm the guy with the triplets who requested Little Mermaid under the sea awhile back....Meyer was excited to here you play it live.

Reminds me of Jackson Brown's Load out And Maurice William's Stay. Not the music but the topic of him wanting to hang out with friends for a while after the concert and the road crew not taking his piano until everything else has been loaded. To me Mathis has so much raw emotion in his playing and Jacob has incredible precision. Makes for a great dueling piano scenario and probably a great friendship as well. As always - thank you for sharing.

Woah there are so many awesome things in this vid. Firstly, I didn't know you could improvise so well with two people on a piano, and secondly, I didn't realise you could do the same with a capella. My mind has been blown today. Thank you :)
