This man changed my life - and I do not mean that as your standard internet hyperbole - his music motivates me on a profound level. Went back to working on my guitar skills, started taking voice lessons and even started toying around with the piano, solely because of Jacob Collier. I think his music just keeps reminding me that however complex and daunting music can be, ultimately it's just an expression of whatever you have to offer inside of you. That was a profound thing for me to find, thank you, Jacob!

The mints are such a patient collaborator. They came in, did their thing, and then just held still and listened to Jacob explain how his world works.

I really don't think Jacob would be into titles, he doesn't need to be a professor and I don't think he wants to be tied to one university., he's too much of a free spirit.

He doesn't have to be a professor, he has to keep being himself and by doing so, he's teaching all of us the best things he could ever share with anyone. Why teach music theory, when you can just do amazing and beautiful music that ppl will feel excited about and learn from and out of excitement. Plus, he's been teaching masterclasses for the last 11 years.

@MrPipol-nm3cd

@@Matthewrents He "fundamentally" disagrees with super producer Rick Rubin who said you cannot make pure art if you have money in mind. "Art is only pure if its not made for commercial purposes". Meaning that you are not fully and honestly expressing yourself to others if you are thinking about money first. But Jacob misinterpret this, and extrapolates it to making art for someone else's enjoyment. Playing for the gallery and making yourself heard is not what Rick is talking about. The fact that Jacob doesn't understand it like that means he has internalized money and commerce with getting attention and exploiting the youtube algorithm,. Rick is talking about what makes art pure, and having money as motivation is not part of it. But in this part of the interview, Jacob admitted that is "fundamentally" his main motivation.
@megatronsroyalemissary382
4 ай бұрын
@@MrPipol-nm3cd Perhaps he misunderstood what Rick meant, yes, but anyone who knows Jacob knows that money is not in any way the primary incentive for his artistic expression. I believe what Jacob was trying to say is that there is nothing that makes art pure or impure, only what connects with the listener and the artist. I am sure of this because Jacob has said time and time again that he is a passionate believer in the fact that there is no wrong or right note, wrong or right chord, or wrong or right sound, only the sound that works the most for the musician. Jacob’s open-mindedness has always informed his creativity.

How Jacob has managed to navigate his way from his solo explorations alone in his room, to the extraordinarily confident and talented person he now is, continues to amaze me. I loved it when he decided to find talented people to collaborate with, and he describes his experiences with such profound insight and articulation. I've also been in one of his 'conducted' audiences and I understand completely the emotional connection he talks about and the notion of 'permission'
this is one of the most enriching interviews I've ever seen and Jacob is pretty much the most interesting and enlightening human being alive today without any pretentions or need to sugar coat anything. So pure and raw and honest, and complex, yet simple. He reminds me of my favorite moments in my life, if that makes any sense. Thank you for this. Big fan of JC since 2016.

@PianoDanny
6 ай бұрын
I’m a fan too. I’m not sure he’s ‘hidden’. He’s got a big fan base but his music isn’t as populist as that made by some of his collaborators. The only slight concern I have is that he’ll burn out as he’s so active and inventive constantly. I don’t think this will happen hopefully. Someone said on this thread: make this man a professor. This would be good too because he’s an excellent and inspiring teacher and this would keep him grounded.
@direnova6284

@@PianoDanny No, you're right. Hiding does imply that's it's by intention but he has hardly any exposure on mainstream media and for me (or any of my friends) to not of heard of him is extraordinary. As for his popularity I don't doubt it for a second, he can fill shows all around the world, he has a dedicated following of knowledgeable fans, much like Joe Bonamassa who can charge hundreds for a ticket and the man in the street has never heard of him.

I came here to say this! This interview taught me so much about JC that had never been covered in previous interviews with him. Fantastic questions and perfect balance of interaction.
Jacob is the most wonderful alien that ever graced us. His eloquence, humble nature and musical knowledge just astounds me. I wish everyone had the same understanding of the humanness of humans as Jacob does.
What a mind and SOUL … if JC had a podcast on music and life, I’d listen to every episode
he is a unique being, let alone being a unique musician. Thank you for being yourself!
We all know he got a perfect pitch. But the sequence 32:12 where he comes up with the beginning of the song "running outta love" and sings exactly the perfect note to the song, it makes me wanna cry. He is one of a kind.
i don’t think i’ve ever cried before during an interview. such an incredible human being
Best JC interview ever! And I think I’ve heard/read them all. Often in interviews, Jacob repeats the same answers he’s been giving for 10 years. He seems relaxed, natural and honest. I’m sure the credit goes to Zach for creating the right environment for the authentic Jacob.

Great interview guys!👍Not only the genius of his music but how grounded & humble Jacob is: he knows who he is & remains authentic to that; wanting to make music that is genuine to his gift and imagination...creating what he loves, ART...just spectacular, inspiring to me as a musician & writer, and to be greatly admired👏🎶🤗
about time, what an absolute legend 🙌🎶
Ok, this is the key moment for me, that there's no such thing as being qualified to start doing music. As a wannabe music artist, knowing how to play some instruments alright, having lots of ideas in my head, but no course or label that gives me the authority to start writing music, I always found myself not qualified enough. This coming from Jacob means a lot to me, to be totally honest.
Beautiful interview. Great questions. Joyous responses. So much to think about. I'll listen again. Thanks to both of you.
I love the amount of reflection that Jacob speaks with in this interview!
i find myself coming back to this video repeatedly. he is truly inspirational
Hello Guys and Thank you, Thank you, THANK YOU! Two points dominate my sense of feeling overwhelmed: 1. ‘Seeing’ sounds/notes/frequencies/vibrations and the ‘Feeling’ of what we see/hear, (And the greater general combo of perceptual processings getting mixed!) 2. Each person as a note in which all other notes are combined. I once saw an example of a tuning fork being struck and from which the resonance caused a second tuning fork to ‘sing’. In that ‘note/key’ I could hear other notes. Jacob seems to me to be the first tuning fork through /from which all us other tuning forks can vibrate and ‘sing’ in a global symphony that in turn sets up a harmonic both from and within itself causing a greater understanding of sound, vibration, frequency, self and the ALL! I am truly overwhelmed and ever grateful for the triggering of this -for me- epiphany. Thank you. 🙏🥰

Such a beautiful human being! cant wait for volume 4!!
What a great interview, I love Jacob's musical vision. Connect people, let go of fears and impediments of any kind, dare to do what each one can achieve to the fullest extent. Finding and enjoying each creative process as a way of life, having the certainty that your music is already playing in the hearts of others, because we are simply part of the same world, and we only seek to feel free and loved. Music reminds us and allows us to reacquire that power and confidence if we treat it as the fantastic tool that it is. Thank you for sharing this journey, for the great contribution you are making Jacob. An Admirable and warm Greeting.

i cannot express how much i love jacob collier! and these questions are incredible!
I’m not a musician. But maybe what Jacob said here 1:01:44 , it’s like colours, which feels different according to the surrounding. I do gardening and I’ve noticed how colours are relative. For example salmon flowers sometimes seem orange, but when grown next to orange flowers they suddenly look more pinkish to the eye.

I love this interview
Thanks for having my bud Jacob on here!
Awesome interview; cheers to music and human abilities as priority
Great questions!
I think that the phrase "less is more" is socially accepted because few musicians explore limits and want to expand them, they don't test, they don't take risks, as Jacob says, I don't know why, out of fear or because they simply do not have enough skills in their arsenal to try everything. And we as listeners have become accustomed to the standards and limits of most musicians. I start to think about this under the idea that what we consider sensorially appropriate or not in music is still partly a social construction and also because I personally love that "multitudinous" of Jacob and other artists like Dimash, for example. Fantastic interview, thanks, and sorry for my bad english.
What a guy!🤯 Do we deserve him? No. Do we need him? Absolutely 💯
Great interview 👍
Little Blue is one of the most powerful, haunting and beautiful songs I've ever heard in my life!

sensacional é ver o Jacob Collier falando de samba
Just saw an ad during this interview with the image and voice of an AI narrator on screen. I skipped the ad and was brought right back to Jacob speaking, and that juxtaposition suddenly gave me this sense that people are really going to be fed up with this artificial crap at some point probably pretty soon (I hope!), and that Jacob is a perfect example of what can never be created by machines. You can tell he's human. Anyway, great interview and I appreciate that it's not from sort of a myopic "schooled musician" perspective, but from the perspective of people living life, of which music is a vital part.
This is one of the best things I’ve ever heard ❤
Fabulous thx u 🙏🏼

When Jacob talks about lyrics having meaning to not the artist, but the listener, I felt that. I sometimes wonder what his lyrics mean to him or where he gets them from in his deep mind palace, but I think he just knows what to put that can relate to his life and the lives of those who listen.
