You know what I love about Collier the most? It's that he's just... himself, no filter, and the "himself" is an absolute charming genius. Gotta love someone who's so honest. I now love his musical palette (it took me a little getting used to), but what I love MOST is his passion and how it's just in everything he does. I love this dude so much!!!

The same garden is featured in the Hajanga video, from which I surmise this is the garden of Jacob's family home -- and yes, it is darling (and so green!). It makes me wonder if this kind of interaction ever happened in the Collier home: Jacob's Mom: Jacob, you promised you were going to cut the grass this week. Jacob: I know, I'm sorry -- I just got caught up working out this groove on the song I'm working on, and I forgot. Jacob's mom: You know the grass isn't going to cut itself! Or are geniuses exempted from cutting the grass?

Ha! As of an hour ago, we know the answer: Jacob DOES cut the grass! In the video "Jacob Collier's Garden Groove," we see Jacob cut the grass with what looks like an old-fashioned scissor mower. We may conclude that tremendous talent does not, in fact, preclude having to do a few chores around the house. Next up: Jacob Collier shops at Tesco, and, sadly, nobody knows who he is (which, honestly, I imagine would be in many ways be a relief: I remember going into a bookstore in New York, some years ago, and seeing Phillip Glass browsing for something interesting to read; I thought of going up to him and being all fan--love--blah--blah, and deciding to just let him be a normal human who doesn't need to be performing the famous composer role all the time).

The “Digital Age” is creating opportunities for an entirely new creative expression never before known. This is simply brilliant on so many levels. The digital age... You do realize there are teens driving cars who have never known a world without KZread, right? There are adults graduated from college, having their second child, who never knew a world without the web. The "digital age" started ages ago. This form of expression has been around for a while. Here are all the references _I_ could find, no doubt there's a million I didn't catch 1:36 - Possible reference to the samba rhythm in all night long 1:47 - Reminds me of the flourish between the 1st two verses in Bakumbe but that could be just me 1:56 - Hajanga obviously 2:01 - Wiggle wiggle wiggle of course 2:08 - I'm not sure but I _think_ this is a reference to the "Go home" group vocal in Djesse 2:16 - "Djesse has a sky like a merry-go-round", also from Djesse and shows up at least once on Vol. 1, 2, and 3 2:39 - Call me crazy but I think the vocal that fades in here is a reference to the bit between the 1st and 2nd sections in Sky Above 3:15 - Of course this is just a regular count in but it also kinda reminds me of the bit in Sky Above between the 2nd and 3rd sections 3:36 - The vocal run that shows up in a few places throughout Djesse Vol. 2 I doubt this list is close to complete, it sounds like there are a billion more references in the samba section that were too quiet for me to make out, and probably also a few in the outro. I also didn't find the Djesse motif and would be blown off my feet if it weren't in here somewhere.

I think this type of art, especially his expression, brings out the best in us all. So grateful for Jacob's music, and grateful for the fun and kind people that it gathers around. Glad to be here too!! And yes, almost forgot to mention what a great addition that Dodie is to this - simply delightful. They both make me smile individually and together.

  • @sirzebra

You know an artist cares about dynamic range when he decides his contrabass ought to drown the 23 other tracks of harmonization because that's how it sounds to the ear. It's all about compromises, indeed against the "it should all fit equally" sound aesthetic that killed most modern mixes. Having a ton of tracks kind of incites a more natural mix, but someone else could've flattened it anyway =) Cheers to this new generation remembering music should mainly feel alive, and not necesarily polished out of it's essence.

@@alonsan3977 Well if you feel that way, you need to meet a lot of new people, i'm not the only one =) I'm not that old, but i know a lot of older music enhtousiasts that can dislike artists such as jacob, while still praising it's true effort and musicality. i also know a lot that are more than happy to see that in this day and age, true geniuses can attain mainstream levels of recognition without "producing" but rather creating. My father made me listen to Nina simone, i introduced him to Common, he made me cry with Petrucciani, i showed him the compteporary Jazz scene with Collier, Dayes, Henry, Glasper and so many more... He introduced me to King Crimson, i blew his mind with The for Carnation ! and it keeps on going back and forth, age has nothing to do with it. Sharing is caring babes, do it enough everyone will be wiser, more open to actual performance and able to discern what is worthy of their ears without having some marketing team telling them what to like !
