Lyrics
We came forward
Running backwards
No one mans a island
Shotgun riding for ya
Somehow we made it
Although jaded
Was it worth it all?
Could it be more?
Overdosing
At least I’m with my baby
We can’t get any higher
We can’t get past messiah
But we’re still chasing
For that feeling
Was it worth it all?
Could it be more?
And oh
What a way to die
Standing to eye to eye
Pretending we’re alive
As we grow colder
And oh
The devil that I know
Is better than the devil that I don’t
So we came forward
Running backwards
No one mans a island
Shotgun riding for ya
Somehow we made it
Although jaded
Was it worth it all?
Could it be more?

This song speaks to Settling in a relationship. Getting married and plateauing. Slowing dying over the years, growing apart. Forever chasing the feeling of the honeymoon stage when infatuation led the way. Looking back at the years wondering if all of this was worth the wasted miserable years. But "Devil the I know" and comfortable with is "better than the Devil that I dont". Might as well stick what what I know, scared of the unpredictable and unknown. Saying to yourself, "It could always be worst, right?"

I love your breakdown of the meaning. Makes me sad that it's what many people end up doing. As much as it makes sense for stabilities sake. I want soooo much more.
@iblameabel
3 жыл бұрын
That’s what’s sad about today. Everyone thinks marriage is about feeling and emotions instead of commitment and love. Love isn’t a feeling it’s an act, when you make that commitment until death it don’t matter how bad you feel, how bored, how uninspired or not willing... it’s a constant COMMITMENT to put your spouse as high as yourself, seeing it from a perspective not of personal gain. When you get bored or tired of raising a child do you just leave the child? Do you tell the child they aren’t giving you enough? No, because you made a commitment. Marriage isn’t a right, it’s a privilege. It isn’t temporary, it’s forever...

Banks to the world❤️
I recently lost a friend to suicide, and this song has helped me through the pain. She passed away, while our relationship wasn't in a good place. I learned a lot from her, she meant a lot to me. We could not have been any more different, and we often argued, but I always wished the best for her. I experienced the highest and lowest period of my life with her. We strived to understand each other, and chased emotional connection, we went through a lot together, especially her struggles with depression. We helped each other, and overcame a lot, but in the end, we became jaded. Even though it was destined to end, it was worth it all, I wouldn't take anything back. she was worth it all.

ON MY BLOCK BROUGHT ME HERE
jacob meditates on the concept of love and loss that runs through his songwriting. He forewarns of the cost of love, remarking how love is expensive and that it all comes to an end regardless of how you feel or what you want… particularly in relation to marginalised groups and conversations around oppression, he highlights that even though everything ends, something will always take its place.

simple lyrics, yet packed with so much messages and interpretations.
I'm ugly crying now..such a beautiful song
Imma need longer versions, cause this don't make no damn sense how your voice makes me feel ♥
What a beautiful song. Questioning the meaning of marriage, of taking risks in intimacy and setting goals for a mutual future , especially at a time of a wide world crisis.
I've never heard a singer that sings with so much emotion before. this is just amazing.
One million plus views isn't enough, the entire world needs to listen to this.
The devil that I know is better than the devil that I don't 🍻🍻
No words, just perfect.
This song sums up my past relationship, I had strong feelings to end it, but I just couldn't let go. All the years we have spent together, there's no way on earth i'd let that slide. Even though I could feel our values and goals drifting apart, i still stayed, until we couldn't stay no more. Is it more painful to let go when you're suppose to, or when you've invested so much time and letting go hurts deep inside. Well, it's been a year, and I'm glad we did. I only feel better now, i don't think the pain was worth it!
First heard this song in “On My Block”. My heart ❤️
This song is exactly what I need right now. My heart is broken, we tried, but it wasn't enough. We tried and were too different. This song makes is what we felt, we were jaded, tired...we wondered if it would be worth it all. But sometimes letting is more loving than holding on.

Why is he soo underrated? Its 2022 and I only found this song because of "Monster" trailer that I watched yesterday- not fare. From the very first chords I could not watch, I could only hear his perfect, yet melancholic voice. Song blended with the movie trailer perfectly and I said to myself its not the movie I wanna watch, its the song I want to have on repeat. I will always remember "Monster" because of THIS song. Jacob, you made my day, I found you today and thank you for being YOU
