    Glad you done this video. I have been curious, as an old Tamper technician, to see how the liner works. The early Tamper machines, around the seventies, had a similar plot method expect it was all analogue. In plot, the shadowboard would motor in and out and "hunt" the infrared beam. A drive cable from the shadowboard drive would then drive a stylus on a moving graph paper on the graph table. The resulting graph would be similar to yours with spiral in and spiral out and circular clearly defined. The big difference was that the operator had to then overlay a thin black tape over the plot, similar to your computer-generated blue line. Then at the starting point and in Line function, a photocell would follow the plot and in turn, set the shadowboard where it needs to be at every sleeper. very similar but more labour intensive and dependent on the operator skill. I much prefer your system.

    I always loved the way a Jackson plots curves. My early yrs.. I ran a Canron Electromatic with a extra 10ft. long beam. AT&SF always ordered their Electromatic's with the long beam. And as you know... Torsion Beam tampers... we had to make our own charts with graph paper... our stations usually were 40ft. Anyways... I was sure happy to do curves with a Jackson. And with the Plassers.. all you do is put down the curve buggy... which was under the main frame... then super elevation was done more with a tie count kind of thing. I didn't run Plassers too much... now these days I find myself a little like Joe Biden... not remembering exactly... LOL. Anyways.... good video !

    Great, love to hear an old tamper guy talk, we would talk for days if we could ever get together. Never been around a Plasser and only did a walk around a Mark 4, never saw it in action either. We use the old QNX Windows version 6.10, it's functional and better than the old DOS system we used to have but it's 17 years old too. Sure would like to have an upgrade to Jupiter 2, but not holding my breathe.

    Great video again, we had a 6700 but I never worked it, I worked on Plassers mostly solved many a curve we never used the automatic solve ( the Plasser people thought we where nuts lol). Thank you David, really enjoyed the comment! Have never been around Plassers or Mark IV's, just this old relic and another 6700 short cab that was a dinosaur....LOL Curves on my computer are auto solved always but I usually adjust the transition points to get fairly equal throws. I like that idea of spirals the same length, that makes sense to me, but we got so many curves here that would take a good bit of work to make that happen. But I will remember that for future reference and thank you so much for telling me that. We do not interchange with anyone alas.... mine to a harbor barge 'loading facility. we have 16.8 miles track, plus some sidings

    I thought about temperature change effect on the rail, & was going to ask about it... then you mentioned 50° being rail neutral temp. So do you have to adjust your tampering for colder or hotter conditions? What about rain?

  • @ccrx6700

    @ccrx6700

    3 жыл бұрын

    David, yes I do adjust in a manner of speaking. Once rail temps get around 90 or above I won't line track. When really hot and the tamper is moving it from side to side it can get like a rubber band in a manner of speaking and go haywire on me. Also at temps below freezing I don't tamp cause the ballast freezes so the tools won't penetrate and ballast can get frozen to the ties, this can create a situation where the tamper will lift the rail and the ties will stay frozen in place, thus pulling spikes. Very good question sir!
