Back in the day, my aunt was one of Gleason's hospice nurses. While she was otherwise very discreet about the case (she never disclosed any details about Gleason's personality, personal life, or health), my aunt did express frustration over the fact that one of the other nurses possibly sold insider info to the National Enquirer, et al. At the time, those publications featured headlines such as "Jackie Gleason's Sad Last Days", "Jackie Gleason on the Brink of Death", etc. and provided specific details that only an insider would have known, which was a damn shame. The offices for those tabloids were basically just up the street in Lantana and therefore were easy to contact for sending tips. The experience really opened my eyes to how those publications worked. BTW, Gleason was big on parapsychology, and when he died his library was donated to the University of Miami. It is now a special collection in their library. The bookplates in his books feature a figure that is exactly the same as the sculpture you showed outside the theater.

How Sweet It Is! I remember as a kid watching his variety show- his characters of Joe the Bartender, Reginald and the Poor Old Soul are classics. His larger than life personality also masked a really good actor. He made a movie called Gigot where he plays a deaf mute in Paris is fantastic and worth watching- it really shows his gift of mime. A true legend! I love how you are exploring Miami and welcome to SoFL Jordan! I am learning so much through your vlogs and you have a gift of telling an interesting story! Thank you! 😍🥰😊☀️🦩❤️

Wow, Jordan, your vlog brought back a lot of good memories. This was one of the few shows that my dad actually sat down to watch. What I remember most is the intro to "The Jackie Gleason Show," the aerial shots of Miami Beach (which I would later have the pleasure of visiting three times) and the distinctive theme music by the Nelson Riddle Orchestra (I would later purchase the album that NR did with Linda Ronstadt). Jackie Gleason was a great entertainer and it is very nice of you to revive his memory in all of us that were lucky enough to have seen him in his heyday.

Hi Jordan!!! I just wanted to drop in & add that my Dad, was one of Jackie’s life long best friends, from back in their NY hey day’s & he was Uncle Jackie to us kids!!! When my parents got a divorce in 1970, Jackie asked my Dad to move down near him in Florida & so, my Dad eventually did… They always hung out & got drunk together, in Miami or up in Fort Myers, where my Dad ended up living until he died in January 1987 also, when I believe Jackie died after my Father, in that summer… They were best buddies, my Dad did travel with him a lot, he was on a few movie sets & he was even became friends with Burt Reynolds, too… And, they both were excellent musicians, my Dad played not only horn type instruments but, he also played the drums & they would jam out together, a lot… Jackie was one of the most amazing people you’ll ever love to meet but, he did have a very bad temper at times I do remember, if he got pissed off but, that was very far & few in between!!! LOL… What your talking about him hanging out at different bars, with all the different people, or out playing golf, I’m absolutely pretty sure that wherever he was, my Dad would be with him also, wearing those crazy & silly golf hats, while golfing!!! LOL… There is so much more I know about Uncle Jackie, from him calling our house to speak to my Dad or letters he would right to my Dad & so on but, I’m gonna just keep my post simple so, I just wanted to share this with ya & thanks for the Jackie Gleason memories & memorial… I think one of these days, I’ll take a ride down to his grave & leave flowers for him, I’m only about 2 & a half, to 3 hours to South Beach, from here in the St Lucie area… Thank you so much for such an amazing tribute, for such a wonderful & talented man!!! 🥰

Went there a few years back to see his final resting place and wouldn't you know they were holding the funeral for his wife and they were all gathered around his final resting place so of course I could not approach and disturb their privacy. I'll have to get back there one of these days. Drove by the cemetery in Fort Lauderdale the other day where Leslie Nielsen is, I've been there a couple of times. And Esther Rolle from Good Times is a little north of there in Pompano Beach, I brought her flowers a couple of times. Saw Morrissey at the Jackie Gleason theater a few years back.

Away we go was also a HUGE tagline for him, he’d say it at the beginning of his weekly variety show! Also it fits being on a grave way better than ….How Sweet it is! 😳 FYI: Flintstones came out in the 60’s not 70’s. 🙄

I worked in Hollywood on sitcoms for many years and met a lot of interesting people. We had a guy who was our dialogue coach on “What a Country” with Yakov Smirnoff. Any way he had been a junior agent in New York City at the time of the Jackie Gleason Show . Each Saturday it was his job to walk down a few blocks and escort Jackie to the stage. He said that as he rounded the corner he would hear Jackie and his wife arguing at the top of their lungs. The whole neighborhood heard it. He would have to go up to their door and wait until there was a lull in the yelling before he knocked . By the way his name was Bob Monroe and he studied acting at the Strassburg school in NY and he sat right behind Marlyn Monroe. He said that she was always late.

Nixon was on there too at Gleason park. I wonder if those stories are true if Nixon brought Gleason to see a dead alien body. He was the man- he rented a five car train to promote his return to TV. Basically a publicity 10 day tour across the US promoting his new show. He had a live band and all the booze and women. He did it again later on from NY to Miami. Away we go was his line after the monologue to start the show. He was the Great One. I think he was nominated for his part in the Hustler but didn’t win.

Art, Audrey and Joyce all hated that Jackie didn't like to rehearse, but they all got along and respected each other. Joyce tells a story here on KZread that Art Carney was hard to get to know. He was a very nice man but liked to have an air of mystery about himself. If they all didn't get along they would not have had the chemistry that they had. It would have showed. Once the actors understood how Jackie worked, they were able to fall in line.

I liked seeing his variety show. Didn’t know the Honeymooners only ran for one season. My husband is more of a Honeymooners fan. I’m glad he didn’t sue The Flintstones. That would not have gone well for his career. Beautiful vlog in Jackie’s honor and very informative. Thanks Jordan. ❤️🙏🏻🌴🌺
