This is real good at letting somebody know how much energy Jack Russells have if they have no idea what balls of energy this breed is and how much exercise they require. I can name a few people that I know that have/had no idea what they were gettiing into when they adopted one of these dogs. I believe that the only reason that the person I'm talking about has such a calm and non-energetic dog is because he is over weight do in part from lack of or exercising; because I don't think that the dog is older than 6-7 yrs. and that is about mid age for this breed as they live 12-15 years. The household I'm speaking the people are not very energetic at all & the pets tend to mimic their owner(s) energy level. If this dog ever gets to his ideal weight, look out because they may just have a Tasmanian Devil on their hand's.

Jacks are a difficult breed. I love them and have had several Jacks. You must be a super dog lover in every way. They must be part of your family in all aspects. They require a lot of exercise with their human. You can’t lock them outside in your big backyard and think it’s ok. They are very smart and require a lot of attention. I love the breed and would rather talk a person out of getting because it’s a giant commitment. You can’t crate a Jack during your work day. They can be very destructive if not exercised and kept inside with their family. They are awesome if your willing to commit to their needs. Most people can’t deal with what it takes to have a happy Jack because they don’t understand the breed.

My lab mix was a great hiker so presumably all labs are good at it. He'd romp for miles and jump into all water along the way. I trained him to track people's scent trail (he's never lost a game of hide and seek). I figured it'd come in handy if one of my kids ever got lost in the woods.

These dogs are amazing. I was looking for a small dog that was not considered a lapdog and the jack russel fits the bill. Just a warning for those not familiar with the breed - they are fire crackers and super super determined. I didnt know i had that many holes in my backyard fence until i got my dog and he has very high prey drive (cats) and a recreational barker. I call him Mr. Busy body. On the positive side he can play ball with my son to no end and he is super funny and a great watch dog. I know he will alert me to anything at any time and he is a cuddler and the perfect size for airplane travel. Great breed if you want a high energy love bug.

Define "non agressive"? All terriers are known for having a strong prey drive and tenaciousness which can cause conflict with other animals and can redirect on their people. No dog has an "obedient" breed characteristic. That comes with training only... Though some breeds can be more responsive to training, like many in the herding group. Also not sure what you mean by "not quite big". Whether you mean small or medium sized. I would suggest you try perhaps an American Shepherd (small). Or Australian Shepherd (medium to big) if you want something a bit bigger than that.
