What’s the movie Jack Reacher about?
Ex-military investigator Jack Reacher (Tom Cruise) leaps off the pages of Lee Child’s bestselling novel and onto the big screen in the explosive thriller the critics are calling “taut, muscular, gruff and cool”*. When an unspeakable crime is committed, all evidence points to the suspect in custody who offers up a single note in defense: “Get Jack Reacher!”. The law has its limits, but Reacher does not when his fight for the truth pits him against an unexpected enemy with a skill for violence and a secret to keep. During his investigation, Jack will discover that the real perpetrators are a gang led by a former Soviet political prisoner : Zec Chelovek (Werner Herzog).

For those curious about the adjustments he makes to the optic after his warm up shot...he adjusts 4 clicks, which at 600 yards on an moa optic will move the bullet impact 6 inches. Since his first shot was 6 inches right, he adjusts 1 moa left. wind change between shots is probably what kept him from shooting a tighter group. The rifle looks to me like a PSS R700, or some sort of M40 clone (the leather military sling suggests this). These rifles are more then capable of shooting sub moa groups at well beyond 600, provided it is zeroed correctly...any shooter with experience is gonna make 600 yards look like child's play. for those curious about the optic brand...it looks to me like a nightforce nx8 8-32x56, which is a common optic to find on military style marksman rifles.

Sub-MOA at 600 yards means anything under about 6.3", and this fake exhibition shows groups more like 3" across. On top of that, the target was supposedly 1000 yards away, so 1 MOA would be around 10.5". In real life, the first shot would have been considered excellent. As for the clicks, they were just for show. A precision shooting scope will have a reticle that allows for small windage and elevation changes without using the turrets. And the scope wasn't zeroed anyway. And you can't zero a scope at 1000 yards. Not for corrections that small, and not with a fouling shot, which is unreliable to begin with. That first shot could have been a flyer due to oil in the barrel, or it could have been off due to a gust of wind between the shooter and the target. There is no way a shooter could rely on it to set the turrets for a correction of a few inches. You can use the turrets at 1000 yards to get you onto a man-sized steel target, but you're not going to get a 4" correction you can rely on. Cruise pretended to shoot a group of around 0.3 MOA, with no recent practice and an unfamiliar gun and optic, with his hand on top of the front bag for some mysterious reason, at 1000 yards. Not going to happen in real life. The farther you get from a target, the bigger an angle your groups will cover, even if you do everything perfectly. Even if you clamp the gun in a vise. Shooting 1 MOA at 1000 yards is harder than shooting 1 MOA at 100 even though the angular displacement is identical. In the U.S. Armed Forces Interservice Championships, a 1.5-MOA target is considered spectacular, and the group would be 5 times the size of Cruise's fake group. Bottom line: movies aren't real life.

Although, I can't say I've seen Duvall in near as many roles as Hackman but Duvall does have something that just brings his character to life. Idk, with Hackman playing so many roles maybe he's just had more chances to be not so believable as Duvall. But they are both truly TREASURES to the acting profession.

There were two such tension building moments in the whole Shooting Range part -- when he goes to place the target, you feel uneasy, thinking that someone will take him out while he's there. And then this random person who is walking seemingly towards them, you again think that's going to be the bad guy and attack him there. The purpose of this is to make the audience realize that in a case like this, it is really easy to become paranoid and consider everything as a possible threat.
