Nicholson is that rare example of a person who is completely comfortable in his own skin. Probably a big part of why he is such an incredible performer

Jack was spot on for not doing The Godfather /The Sting instead to nail perfectly China Town / The Last Detail. It's a mark of a complete actor to know when NOT to do certain projects. PERFECTION.

Never really saw him talk candidly like that before. Yes he does seem really down to earth there

"He lives up the hill from me." There's something in this that captures the essence of Nicolson. He can come across intense, but then he's suddenly disarming and direct.

Jack Nicholson's style of speaking should be adopted as the official American accent. No English accent could compete with Jack's confident aged Bourbon undertones.

Jack is AWESOME good person to talk to about acting.

I think he knew what he was doing. He wanted to be a star. I recall him saying in an interview he knew the moment it happened. He was watching Easy Rider on the opening night, or something like that, and a specific scene in the film caused a reaction in the audience. Then he knew he had made it 😎

There's a great vid of him at a Phils game in 2009 and the Phanatic comes flying out on his ATV dressed as Batman and comes over to where Jack is sitting and starts to mess with him and Jack is laughing and playing right along.

There will never be another Jack. Damn... he was cool before anyone knew what cool was.

He turned down The Godfather so Al Pacino can get it that's great.

This is total self-mythologizing on Nicholson's part. He probably played football in NJ, but he did not grow up with the conventional middle American life. He was the son of two professional stage performers, although his precise paternity is an issue of some debate--again, not normal for middle America. Nicholson keeps his skeletons in the closet so that they can fuel his inimitable and dangerous acting style.

I’ve heard that Jack was considered but Coppola stated he wanted an Italian that looked Sicilian so there was no chance for Jack to get that role, thank goodness.

I don't get it.... Jack was offered to play the lead role in Godfather but one of the reasons he turned it down was because his character didn't have any scenes with Brando?? Which role was Jack offered? And didn't Brando have the lead role??

Pacino was probably considered THE lead, and if you watch the film there aren't that many scenes with Michael and Vito together. There's a good one towards the end but that's about it.

I’m probably in the minority but I think Chinatown is better than both The Sting and Godfather. Godfather is way overrated in my book. It borders on boring but Chinatown is good from start to finish

I think the reason why some people say its overrated are because they come from the casual audience. The Godfather really is not like what movies people are used to seeing today. When people think of a mafia film, they expect to see some people action, bloody gore, and hear the F-word every 5 seconds, right?? ..And that's the thing, Godfather isn't like that. It’s more “realistic” if that made sense. The casual audience today with their short attention span are so used to fantasy movie universes that this movie really wouldn't work for them. The only successful cinematic universe besides MCU is what? DC movies?? People's tastes have changed overtime, and now people are honestly used to “popcorn fillers” or mindless entertainment that have a lot of action and quips that when they see a 3 hour movie of people just talking about the Mafia world and building characters…. they lose interest and say its boring because of the pacing SMH Casual audiences dont watch movies to be “enlightened” or “think a lot”, they watch movies to be entertained and laugh and forget about their real problems. Which is why, according to them,The Godfather is overrated because it has "sluggish pacing" which causes them to not really watch the entire movie. Me personally? While I dont think Godfather's best movie I ever saw, it is however a GREAT movie that IMO revolutionized Cinema forever. The script, most of which was written by Mario Puzo, was very, very good. The novel, also good, reads like more of a pot boiler (or “plot boiler”)… Puzo said it was essentially a first draft, which he sent to the publisher, who printed it anyway without a lot of editing. The Godfather screenplay, therefore, was essentially a second draft of the story and is much better for it; it has less emphasis on goofy subplots and instead focuses almost entirely on the story of Don Corleone and his three sons (four if you count Tom Hagen). A man and his three sons? Sound familiar? It should. Because it echoes what some people consider the greatest drama ever written: King Lear, Shakespeare’s tragedy about a king and his three daughters, all vying for power. As a novel, The Godfather reads a little like a cheap thriller at times, although certainly a big cut above other crime novels, because of its insight (thanks to Puzo) of the actual workings of the Mafia. But as a film, with the enhancement of 1) Coppola’s insight, 2) Puzo’s revisions, and 3) Brando’s performance, not to mention Pacino, Robert Duvall, and others… it becomes positively Shakespearean in its feel. It feels like grand opera, with its eternal themes of family, loyalty, betrayal, revenge, and power. Except it’s realistic and believable. A final observation: The Godfather has one of the greatest musical soundtracks in film history. Godfather II has a soundtrack that’s even better, as it incorporates musical themes from the first movie. But I have an observation about this: It seems the greater the film itself, the more it inspires the composer to rise to a level of greatness. You almost never hear a great soundtrack to an otherwise unmemorable film.

I'll just say yes there is still a fair amount of swearing in the Godfather mostly courtesy of James Caan. I preferred the sequel alot more than The Godfather, I thought Brando's performance was overrated.

.And yet when he was in Doctor Spivey's office in Cuckoo's nest he kills a fly by pounding the his fist on the desk. The actor playing the doctor said there wasn't a fly. And he did Prizzi's Honour, breaking his rule about Italians playing Italians.
