================
On this episode of Heart Wisdom, Jack helps us better navigate the mysteries of life and death by letting go of our attachments.
Jack teaches how letting go of our attachment and desire for control opens us to the vastness that this incarnation has to offer.
Show Notes
Death and Rebirth (Opening) - Jack reflects on Spring and its archetypal representation of rebirth and renewal of life. This leads to the question of how we go about navigating death and rebirth. With Jack, we examine how our mindfulness practice gives us the capacity to be with this change from a place of balance and wisdom.
“We must allow ourselves to turn our attention and our hearts to this mystery of ‘Who am I?”
Opening to it All (10:00) - If we open ourselves to the vastness that life has to offer, the good and the bad, we open ourselves to a vastness within. Jack explores the quality of love necessary to show up to this life and all it has to offer.
Our Attachment (23:00) - How do we go about opening ourselves completely to life and love? Jack explains how the practice of non-attachment opens us to the vastness that life presents. He relays the words of his teacher, Ajahn Chah, who, like the Buddha, taught that our suffering and isolation comes from attachment.
“Non-attachment doesn’t mean that we are not relating, but it means to be present without the grasping or controlling.”
Letting Go (29:55) - If we give up all of our attachments, then what becomes of things like relationships, social justice? How do we operate in this life after letting go of attachment? Jack explains the different capacity available to us beyond control and attachment. With dedication, commitment and care we can bring our best selves to everything life has to offer without any attachment to the results.
“To not be attached doesn’t mean that you are not present, but you are present in a different way. The secret is to act well without attachment to the outcome.”
The Five Rivers (41:00) - The Buddha described our human incarnation as being Five Rivers: a river of sense experience, a river of feelings, a river of perceptions, a river of thoughts and a river of consciousness. Jack explains how a liberated being experiences these same rivers but does not cling to them, which is true freedom.
“Freedom comes through this training of loving-awareness where you notice the feelings and notice the thoughts, but you don’t take them personally.”

    I’ve ignored Kornfield because Buddhism has always eluded my appreciation and understanding. (We even lived near each other and knew people in common… ) and sure enough I find yet another prejudice that shows me where and how I am stuck and how much I can learn by looking at it. Kornfield is now helping me navigate the sudden death of my life partner. We are so fortunate to live in a time where access to this wisdom is wide open and free.

    I have been meditating daily with the intention of letting go and being authentic. Two issues came up. That I needed to be who I am. I realize I have not exercised very much of the creativity I have and the other, which I first thought I was over, was being regularly bullied in Jr. High. The two came together when I decided to join a story telling group. My choice was about a bully who atoned for his bullying. As I rehearsed it did not go as planned. Soon after beginning my story I broke down. My tears flowed and each time I tried, it happened over and over again. Clearly, I am not over this. I am not sure how to let this go. I try thinking of my young self and being kind to that young guy and understanding of the situation. It has not worked. Ideas?? Professional help seems impossible to get and would it even work?

    I never got bullied but I think the logical way through this is to let a bit the trauma surface like you did whilst reading but then to switch focus to understanding that the bully never hated you, only himself. As Aldous Huxley describes them is a frustrated muscle man, or delinquent one in your case. Cruelty toward you as some kind of momentary boost to their own lack of self-worth, hard to pity them but one must. It completes the understanding your mind needs for resolution. Should work in theory, this understanding/forgiveness is stored as muscle tension and may be hard to tap into as it's different to the trauma bit. It's always like this, just like opening to love is much easier than acknowledging loneliness. One is the key to understanding that is craved, the other is the healing. The bully will have self-esteem issues that need some kind of key too. I hope this helps matey.

    To act well with no expectation to the outcome.... Heart centred attachment, is necessary, as with our children.... In our work, we do the work with diligence and integrity, not to gain acclaim or validation and yes there is payment, but the heart of it is to do our absolute best with a kind and good heart!
