Jack Hines Escapes Capture at Chickamauga

Ойын-сауық

As part of the escort for Maj. Gen. William S. Rosecrans' headquarters of the Army of the Cumberland, Jack Hines likely imagined he'd be out of harm's way. An enslaved person who escaped and enlisted as an undercook in the 15th Pennsylvania Cavalry, he and his comrades became caught in the chaos and confusion of the Battle of Chickamauga. Hines suffered a painful injury and barely escaped the Confederates. Here's his story.

I just love to hear these informative backgrounds for all the images. It just amazes me that no person from the images has the same story, and it underscores how important all the images of the civil war continue to be. Thank you so much for your work.

What a fascinating story! I have many questions. I wonder what the story is of his first wife and the 4th child. So much there for a long form piece on the family.

Standard understanding among slaves in the South, according to an American historian I was married to for many years, was if you saw a good chance to get away, you took it.

Mostly a good story, a shame he abandoned his wife and children.
