Jack, Vera, Alec, and the amazing Magenta Savannah, turn this simple, yet almost feature-length storyline, into absolute Coronation Street comedy gold.
On 15 April 1998, Jack Duckworth went to his doctor and so would begin Jack Quits Smoking. Remarkably, this would feature in the next 13 episodes and would conclude, three weeks later, on 8 May 1998 after taking up 80 minutes of screentime.
During this story, Jack would wager his success with Alec Gilroy, be covered in nicotine patches, undergo hypnosis therapy, adopt the persona of 'Lusty' Jack Johnson, threaten to buy a horse, get history wrong, and tuck into a delicious pie.
This story was running while Jim is pushed from scaffolding by Steve, Nick used Leanne to get to the man who killed his dad, and Zoe's baby died.

YK 15 - And fun ways of remembering their lines. Elizabeth Dawn, who played Vera, and Bill Tarney, who played Jack, both said in interviews years ago that they used to stick parts of their scripts on props when they were filming their scenes. Nigel Pivolo, who played Terry, said once that they were filming a scene in the early-1980s where they were having breakfast and Elizabeth and Bill had put parts of their dialogue on a cereal box and in a sugar bowl. When Nigel went to pick up the sugar bowl during a take, Elizabeth took his hand and moved it off it. It was only when he looked down that he realised in had her script in it. 🤣🤣
Who knew 8 years later it would become a non smoking pub by law 🚭
