Fnaf 1-4 was a nice vase. Sister Location accidentally bumped into the vase and it fell on the floor, getting cracked in the process. Pizzaria Sim and UCN came and sealed up the cracks with paste. The vase is now a little bit uglier than before but it’s still fine it works. Help Wanted then came in with a hammer. Then Security Breach was hired to make a brand new vase but instructions were mixed up and we ended up with a plate. Does this metaphor make sense? No? Well good, it represents the fnaf storyline perfectly then.

Makes more sense than the FNAF storyline. What? Who said that? No but I totally agree, though I think lorewise the game fell off with the release of 4, but FFPS and UCN did in fact seal up the cracks. It was cleaned up the best it could be. And if Help Wanted had stuck with being a VR experience without adding new lore (maybe clarifying previous lore would've been cool, but Glitchtrap is…stupid), it would've been perfect. A nice little bow to wrap up the gift of the franchise. Alas.

13:01 When the first FNAF came out, I always just chalked the Bite of 87 as one of those company public embarrassments. Just some term that blue collar workers throw around, like "The outage back in May" or "The flooding of '03". Never really considered it more important than just suggesting the animatronics are known dangers. But the burgeoning fandom had little to no lore at the time, so naturally they clung unto what little there was and tried to make em out to be the biggest things ever. So naturally Scott just ended up going along with it and giving em what they wanted.

One of the biggest problems with FNAF's timeline is that it's actually. Four timelines. Because it essentially got soft-reset thrice. Once by FNAF 4, once by Sister Location, and then once the torch got passed over to Steel Wool Studios. When Scott made FNAF 1, there was no overarching story, it was just a game with a defined setting and a hidden story about murdered children hidden in rare in-game events. Nothing too complicated, and he didn't expect it to become that big of a hit. It became a *HUGE* hit. So he made FNAF 2, and when he made FNAF 2 he actively had FNAF 3 in mind as a finale. One story with a beginning, middle, and end. FNAF 1's hidden lore established the murders, FNAF 2 gave us a glimpse at the killer, and FNAF 3 both showed his death and had you face him down yourself to end him for good (or did you?). And that was the end of the story, one complete package. But then people didn't like FNAF 3's death jumpscare. So Scott, disappointed, made FNAF 4, then subtitled The Final Chapter, with the nightmare animatronics, and an audio-based survival gameplay to get you in prime position to get jumpscared. And in FNAF 4's minigames, judging by Scott's cryptic hints during MatPat's streams, was meant to re-contextualize all of the others in one way or another. Whether you choose to believe it or not, taking only the first 4 games into consideration, Dream Theory (FNAF 1-3 were all the dreams of a scared child) actually seems like it was a very reasonable theory at the time. For example, "Why would the toy Chica be missing her beak?" That implies that the reason Toy Chica in FNAF 2 has no beak when she's chasing you is because the child saw it on the playground and it entered his nightmares. But Scott wasn't happy with some elements of FNAF 4 so he made Sister Location which retconned all of that previous implication from 4 into making everything in the series definitively true, and also hijacking concepts from the (then) new FNAF novel, The Silver Eyes, into canon. This is where Afton got his name from. Though the actual events of the novel trilogy itself isn't canon, the concept introduced there-in, such as Remnant, are, putting it in a really weird semi-canon state. Sister Location was marketed as being a separate, new storyline. But it wasn't. And it turned the killer from a mysterious unknown child-murderer to an evil mad scientist. People didn't really like the new hard sci-fi direction it took the series. So Scott kinda retreated into hiding for a little over a year while he developed Pizzeria Simulator in near-total secrecy, shadow-dropping it disguised as a really cheap-looking free old-timey style game which quickly shed the facade into being the proper finale to the timeline. Pizza Sim's story did a lot of hard work in course-correcting what happened with Sister Location and tying up all the loose ends, and has the absolute best piece of story content in the series with its true ending. Ultimate Custom Night was originally meant to simply be a custom night DLC for Pizzeria Simulator but the project grew so large that Scott decided to make it into its own separate thing. It was a cute epilogue send-off as Afton suffers in his own personal hell for all eternity. But then Scott passed the IP off to Steel Wool Studios who hard-soft-reset the timeline entirely but I'm less familiar with their work and I'm getting tired from typing but. Yeah, Steel Wool could have taken the story in such an interesting direction if they'd focused on someone truly new, a story of corporate greed not being willing to let go of the past. But in servicing the brand they just can't let go of the past.

Yeah I think this is the only sane way to look at the series. Scott's "vision" for the story changed rapidly from game to game and he's admitted this himself. FNAF 1 to FNAF 3 - "The Purple Guy" story FNAF 4 - Crying Child's story, "Dream" Theory (The box was definitely something to support dream theory but was scrapped because ending a multi-million dollar franchise on "it was all a dream lol" would have been super disappointing.) Sister Location, Pizzeria Simulator, and UCN - The "Afton" story FNAF VR + Security Breach - Tried to set up the "Vanny" story as a new villain which would have been cool but fucked it up by relying on William Afton again.

@@Kurtlen it’s honestly why when working on this fnaf vhs storyline that I’ve brainstormed and worked on the costume for almost a whole entire year… I wanna make sure the fnaf story I’m making is planned out and understandable in a sense while complex and filled with mystery while being engaging. For a bit I was thinking to maybe keep the aftons and fredbears family diner but I rethought on some things and think it’s better to do a “Blum house Halloween trilogy” if that makes sense. Basicallt reboot the whole dang story and have the events only connect to the first game, but build off of it and make a whole new story that’s also inspired by the rest of the franchise while doing its own thing. Hoping for the first episode I’ve been working on comes out by April I mainly am saying this cuz well, as frustrating as the fnaf lore can be as well as frustrating and sometimes hits hard at you seeing everybody else’s frustration on the franchise that it makes you sometimes question on your love of the series, it has so much material that it could actually make many good au’s (with Scott even making some of his own) Main thing I’m hoping is when I finish one of the costumes for the project of mine, that people could feel that it’s kinda a celebration of bonnie and animatronics, including the slight uncanny factor

You've done really well documenting all of this, but I'd just like to point out one thing regarding the passing of the torch onto SW studios: SW have said in an interview (I believe it was Dawko's) that they were not in charge of the story. Or at the very least, Scott had them implementing things that they had NO idea how it connected to the story. (An example of this being the room with the SL TV and the cryptic message). Perhaps now that Scott has retired he's completely hands off of the story. But when Help Wanted rebooted the series, it was Scott's story still then. He chose to reboot the canon again in order to fit what the VR game was going for, instead of just letting it be it's own thing. If anyone has extra info in that though feel free to say because that's pretty much the extent of my knowledge regarding it.

And to add, Silver Eyes WAS meant to be paired with FNAF SL. Both of which at the same time introducing several new concepts, though the book of course went much deeper... And as Scott put it more or less, Books 100% Canon, completely different Continuity. Now the Fazbear Frights series... there's definitely elements of Important Lore, and even Parallels, but it's FAR reduced from the Trilogy series.

Sometimes it feels so strange how little control of the story afton actually has despite it being pretty much ABOUT him. Things just happen to him that happen to be beneficial or fail to impede him. After killing the kids, he got stuck in the springlock suit and became immortal. He then got trapped for 30 years in a backroom which pretty much is never brought up in the games even though this is probably one of the only times that someone actually succeeded at 'stopping' Afton. He then got released at random, burned alive a few days later, wasn't hindered at all, got lured into another place where he got burned again, only to be brought back as an AI and become even stronger again, again without him plotting anything, he possessed the two testers, one of the only things he actually intentionally did for the longest time, then after getting himself back into his old suit, for some reason, gets beaten by a kid and immediately gets eaten by the blob and inevitably will become more powerful again. Afton is in so little control of his own rise to power he's not even a villain by this point, he's just a lucky guy who's trying to pretend like he knows what he's doing.

I will give FNAF this, it fully encapsulates the downfall most relevant long running horror move franchises go through. Starts off as a new, fresh IP with all sorts of iconic mystery, characters and horror, faffs about slowly being consumed by its own weight of it's own branding and iconography, looses the plot of the kind of story it was even telling in the first place as the creator waffles between new idea after new idea each entry, manages to have it's come to jesus moment around its presumed final chapter(no, not the fourth one) meant to cap things off once and for all before essentially rebooting itself and carrying on, basically spitting in the face of everything that came before for the sake of keeping the franchise going because much like its iconic antagonist we can't just let this shambling undead spirit rest.

Charles Lee Ray- main antagonist of the Child's Play/Chucky series- has gone from a serial murderer who used a long voodoo chant to possess a doll as he was dying so he could keep on murdering people only for the doll body to turn more human as he spends time in it and can only be killed by having his heart destroyed, to someone who has mastered voodoo from a website and can use a much shorter chant to split his soul and possess a whole army of the same kind of doll body with no ramifications to himself, bodies which can be killed by other means besides having their heart destroyed even when they make no sense compared to some other shit they go through and survive(decapitation doesn't work but strangulation does I guess), and is so crazy prepared for anything that he had his therapist who became his accomplice when he was a child prepare a doll body for him to possess in a safe in her office as WELL as one that he had already possessed and perfectly disguised as the same kind of doll he forced his ex-girlfriend/wife into after he killed her and had given to an extremely impressionable and probably autistic little girl he whispered to as a doll JUST so that, after he decided he really wants to kill her for real this time because she betrayed him to the cops on the night he died for the first time, he can have her take the girl and the disguised doll away from the protagonists of the series and foil her attempt to possess the doll he's already taken up residence in so he can get the drop on her and kill her except not really because no way the show's going to kill one of the most beloved characters in the franchise as the resolution to a cliffhanger. And that STILL isn't as stupid as all the shit that went on with Willy Aftface because at least it's self-aware about how fucking absurd it's gotten.

Horror Villains are notoriously hard to take seriously if they're reoccuring. Myers had an incest baby with his niece, Jason went to Manhattan and Space, Sadako went from "7 Days" to being a canonical KZreadr and a victim of self-aware mutant smallpox who just wants to be a popstar. Funny enough I'd say Sadako is the closest to Willy A than anything else. They both made people give birth to clones, both keep getting weird powers every time they come back, both for some reason have now used computers even after death for google/youtube, and both at some point went completely digital (VR for Afton, Sadako went full "the universe is literally a simulation and I am in control") You either die on your first or second outing, or you become an absolute gag of a character that nobody takes seriously. You might recover a little with a really good reboot, but you'll fall back within 2-3 outings. Sometimes they reboot and the reboot is immediately impossible to take seriously.

How a promising villain turning…lame is a major point of interest for me, and I think the way you describe William is on the money. He’s not scary anymore, his status as someone who gets revived and humiliated and revived again is something that damages him both in-universe and out-of-universe. When Sister Location was initially a “fully fresh start”, Ennard felt like a far more fresh and distinctly “Sci-Fi” villain character(s) with tons of potential for various new forms and gameplay mechanics, and he was *literally* thrown into the garbage. He was done dirty in the grand scheme of things, like the shadow animatronics, and the puppet, and Baby, and most likely the Security Breach peeps like the Daycare Attendant and Vanessa. Probably one of the reasons why FNAF has a freakish amount of fan content surrounding it is because the “real” storyline and characters are a trainwreck. It’s the Sonic situation of the fans making more satisfying and coherent stories and characters than what the official people give us. I hope you get to review/discuss something you ENJOY sooner or later, man. Nice work.

I totally agree with how Ennard should've been the main villain going forwards; Afton should've died in Fnaf 3 and Ennard should've been the villain from then onwards. Just as proof of this; the Incident Logs fan project shows just how creepy and terrifying Ennard could've been; it can come from anywhere and considering the absolute mess of souls within its body, it acts more like a feral beast than a calculating killer which I feel would've been a perfect replacement for Afton after Fnaf 3.

I appreciate what you said about Afton in how no one knows his goals. Some people see him as a sympathetic villain trying to get his kids back, when that is just insane considering he is so willing to murder other children to do it. That whole “I’ll put you back together” really messed up Afton as a character by turning him into a confusing mess. All he needed to be was a child murderer, literally the worst thing a person could be. It makes FNAF 3s ending a perfect ironic ending for a truly evil villain. Then FNAF 4 comes in and suddenly he’s humanized, like we should feel bad for him. That is so unsatisfying, and it really detracts from the impact of the previous games ending. Then FNAF 5 comes, and it confuses things even more by making him some kind of super genius with a group of robots that kill children for… some reason??? It’s never explained why he needs to kill more children, at least in an obvious way. For remnant? Why does he need it? For immortality? Is he still trying to bring his kids back? What the hell does he want??? WHAT is his MOTIVATION??? NO ONE KNOWS! Tldr, I miss when Afton was just a mysterious evil child murderer and that’s it. No children, no overly complex family drama, just an absolutely horrible purple monster.

About the whole why the Daycare Attendant has a murder mode thing. In a supreme case of stuffing details on books so they can make more money off them. In Tales From the Pizzaplex book #5 it's stated that he was originally the main attraction of the theater next door. Sun was the good guy, Moon was the bad guy. Eventually due to people quitting on mass. They just said "Fuck it, let's put this random ass animatronic not ment for this job in the daycare." They just didn't take out the Moon part for whichever reason because uhh Fazcorp cheap funny I geuss?

The "Michael situation" never made sense to me at all, but I read a KZread comment once that explained it just a bit: After Michael got scooped, he was used as a costume for the amalgamation called ennard, once his body wasn't useful anymore ennard escaped, technically, this means Michael's body was a animatronic suit for a while, because it carried ennard inside of him for a long time. So Michael, in the chaddest move in the entire series, probably decided to *HAUNT HIS OWN DEAD BODY* to revive himself.... So the Michael we see from this point onwards is just the ghost of Michael haunting his own corpse... That still doesn't makes sense, but it's better than nothing

The part about the four kids feeding Crying Child to Freddie the Pooh, and then only one of those kids (Afton) gets a name and continued relevance, really bugs me. Back in the day, I always rejected "Dream Theory" and always thought the real story of FNAF1-4 was a sort of Mystic River or Stephen King's It thing, where these kids/teens were involved in this tragedy, and something later in life drags them back to the pizza joint where the tragedy happens. What supported this is how the name on the check changes in FNAF2 between the weekdays and weekends... so if you assume FNAF1 and FNAF3 also had different protags, then that was four kids.... presumably, you were playing as the four kids and the events were sort of their karmic redemption? Maybe? But literally I was the only person online who ever had this theory.

That’s actually really good??? That would have been WAY more interesting and kind of loop in with the weird quasi-nostalgia and wry humor of the original game a lot more cleanly tbh, and it’s so weird that we had what seemed like an almost perfect setup for something like that with the 4 kids IN RELEVANT MASKS DURING THE INCIDENT, almost like it was foreshadowing something happening with them as a group… but then it just…. never ended up going anywhere??? 🫤 I also TOTALLY feel you on that “I was the only person online to have this theory” thing - I will openly admit that I started losing interest after the *second* one, dropped off actively following FNAF theory fever after the fourth one, and only occasionally glanced over to see the FNAF side of the internet seemingly on Fire periodically after that….. but even then, I ALSO still held onto an alternative theory that I was surprised to never see posted anywhere else on the internet, and to this day I’m surprised no one else has come up with it independently??? 🤔

To be fair, Chica saying she was the first was probably meant to be her way of saying that when the 5 kids went missing, she was the first one that William murdered from the group. Not that she was killed before Charlotte, but that between her, Gabriel, Jeremy, and Fritz, she was first. Edit: I assumed Moon was so aggressive and Sun wasn't because he had security protocols and Sun didn't. Like, Moon might have been in charge of keeping the Daycare kids safe, and Sun was made to just care for kids. Maybe those security protocols gave the virus something to latch onto and crank up to 100 to make them go from "incapacitate threat" to "kill any intruders". But one of the books says that Sun and Moon were originally the hero and villain actors in the Daycare Theater, before they were moved to the Daycare itself. So that could be why too.
