Jack Benny radio show 1/7/45 First Show with the Vault
Jack prepares for the gang's trip to New York; Larry Stevens sings "Don't Fence Me In".
When Jack realizes he needs $5 for expenses on the trip, he opens his safe. The beginnings of the vault gag are here, with Ed, the guard, and lots of crazy sound effects. The vault gag was also used on television, notably in an episode of "The Lucy Show", but it was a perfect gag for radio, becoming more outrageous over the years.

The depot scene was on an old-time radio tape I had in 1983, when I was 14. My first exposure to the radio show. I'd been watching the TV show for a few years with my dad. I've loved Jack and the gang nearly my whole life! I'm 53 now.
In the habit of listening to these when we go to sleep.
I love all the vault schtick over the years.
Some of my best friends
The guard was played by Joseph Kearns who would later become mr. Wilson on Dennis the Menace

He appeared as "Ed" for the next ten years.
Have been a fan of the show for years, eversince some local radio stations would broadcast re-runs. LOL with how the vault alarm ends with a fog horn.
3:03- JACK: "Roosevelt did." ED: "Oh, that's good. I always thought Teddy DESERVED another term!" JACK: "Gee, you HAVE been down here a while, haven't you?"
Golden Age of Comedy. It's a shame most of the jokes are dated now, but the laughs at the time were precious.
I'm in a hurry. What time does the vault bit start?
