What's even sadder about this moment is he barely gets a minute for himself. He cannot ever escape it. Already, they are on his case, asking him to do more, on the walkie talkie. He's the superhero they all look to. You can only imagine how the burden of responsibility is weighing him down, and the personal guilt/anguish that is inevitably borne from taking actions to safeguard the responsibility thrust upon him, but still they ask more from him. Even now after a harrowing full 24 hours, this job, his coworkers, the government, the country is pushing him to keep going because he's necessary, he's crucial. he's holding it altogether no matter the personal cost to himself.

@Akshay Natu I don´t think it would work. Season six, when the bomb exploded in the center of LA, Jack knew that he is the only one, that can solve the stuff. They also knew, that they need him, that without Jack, nothing would work at all.

@Akshay Natu I still feel like Jack has some kind of burden or responsibility and also, if the world was saved, why ten interrogate some random dude, just lock him up. I think they knew, that Jack can get the best information from that dude, which is the reason, why they are calling him. I agree with you man, Jack could and maybe should send them away, but his daughter is gone, his wife dead... he does not have anyone around anymore, so work is the only thing that is keeping him alive at that moment. I think.. if i remember correctly.

Jack endured A LOT of stuff during Day 3. Being forced to chop off his own partner's hand, being forced into killing Chappelle, finally ridding himself of Nina, the overall emotional toll of the day's events, and almost yet again losing Kim. It all just sunk in at once.

I always thought this was one of the most powerful moments in the series that captures the character of Jack Bauer the most. To have been through so much in such a small period of time, and then when he has a small moment to himself to have it all settle in and have him break down like this, only to be interrupted to go back to work. It shows he is strong, but not invincible.

My favorite season. At first, I didn't like this season as I thought it started off slow, but man, does it make up for it later and then some. Also the show really is about what the job does to the characters and their sacrifices they make and boy do all the main characters sacrifice something either for good or bad while facing probably the 24's darkest threat. My favorite season.

Day 3 was the first season of 24 I watched from beginning to end, and this was perhaps my favorite moment in the show. Even though I missed Day 1 and 2 and thus didn't appreciate how much Jack had lost already, the events of Day 3 were very exhausting for him, as they would be for anyone. This moment shows that beneath the gruff exterior, behind all the threats and rage and high bodycount, the Jack Bauer of Day 1 still existed. He's not some invincible super spy like in the movies, he's just a guy who's been put into one impossible situation after another. But as the radio call at the end demonstrates, he simply doesn't have time to think about what he does in the name of protecting his country. He has a job to do and he simply can't walk away. The real tragedy is that by the time his story is all said and done, *this* Jack Bauer is gone.

A lot of things happened that day for Jack to break down like this. He not only used drug addiction as a cover up for his operation, but because he never really got over Teri's death and his work and personal life were stressing him out. Kim was in danger again, Tony almost died and was facing charges for aiding Saunders in order to save Michelle, his break up with Kate Warner, cutting off Chase's hand, Claudia died before she and her father and brother could get to America like Jack promised her, having forced to shoot Ryan Chappelle, and finally killing Nina for murdering Teri. Even day 6 was the most screwed up days he's gone through having to come back and deal with his PTSD from his torture and imprisonment in China. Saunders warned him that the U.S. would abandon him like his country did with him.

What makes this scene so great is that we've seen Jack go through some shit, and everything that occurred on Day 3 plus so those months undercover, and this is the first time he's able to just let himself feel openly. And for an action hero to display such vulnerability is really groundbreaking. It really humanized Jack. And of course he only gets a minute to feel before he has to bottle it so back up and go back to work. Jack loses everything for his job and this scene exemplifies how he puts his country first and himself 2nd.

The thing about this scene was that not only Jack was crying about the day's events, he was crying about the underlying issues that he hasn't dealt with. The major one was his situation with Kate. He hadn't dealt with at all about his heartbreak over what happened with Kate. You can see in this scene that if he would've stayed with her, he would've gone straight to her after the day was over. But he can't and it kills him. Jack is completely lost without Kate. Kate was his only real chance at lasting happiness. He regrets walking out on her. Jack and Kate connected during their most vulnerable times of their lives and in the most intimate way. Something like that never dies. Jack never actually got over her, he just suppressed his pain and heartbreak. I think him not being able to quit using after his undercover was not just because of his loss of Teri. It was also because he was punishing himself for leaving Kate because that was the one thing he never actually wanted to do. He forced himself to leave her because he was willing to absolutely anything to protect her aka his words to her during season 2. They didn't even had an proper break up. He probably told her he was leaving undercover, then had one last passionate night together and never saw each other after that. They left the door completely open for Kate's return to 24.

While Chappelle and Teri's deaths played key parts in this scene, I think there was a different reason for Jack's breakdown. Minutes before, Kim said that she is leaving CTU to be with Chase, and Jack knew at that moment his daughter was grown up and didn't need him anymore. Up until that point he had been holding himself together for Kim, keeping his feelings contained deep inside so he could focus on his job to keep her safe. Now that she doesn't need his help anymore, he can finally let out all the anguish he has kept bottled.

Totally agree, but I believe the pain of losing Teri and killing Chappelle must have played a much more significant role to his breakdown than his troubled relationship with Kim. The fact that his wife died because he couldn't save her in time, the fact that he struggled to overcome a heroin addiction and the act of killing a colleague from work in cold blood like he did would probably have caused a mental breakdown much earlier in any real person. Remember when he killed Curtis in season 6? He didn't just cried, but also collapsed and puked on the floor while telling Buchanan he could not keep doing what he did. These killings would probably haunt someone in every single dream for the rest of his life.

This was one of the most memorable scenes in the whole series. I remember watching it and literally coming out of my chair, tears in my eyes, yelling at the TV, "That's it! That's it! That's what being a pastor is like!" What Jack Bauer epitomized was the person who does what he does, regardless of how misunderstood he might be, silently carrying the pain no one else would understand. Yet, after letting out the tears, he dutifully answers the call to go back to work. So many pastors stayed in the ministry because of Jack Bauer's character. I am one. This scene played a big part.

@Power 106 The following seasons were extremely poorly written in comparison. Palmer was basically written off the show, as were Tony and Michelle before they found excuses to bring Tony back. Jack had nowhere to go. Kim was written off the show. So yeah, there were a crap ton of problems with later seasons. The second half of Season 5 was good because the Logans became the defacto main characters for a season. But other than that...

Keifer gives Emmy worthy acting in this scene. I remember tearing up coz it’s so believable his pain you feel this actually happened. And he barely gets a minute to grieve. Chuck Norris has nothing on Jack coz this man has literally gone through hell more than once.

I think this day was particularly hard on Jack because for the first time he was forced to come to terms with all the things he was willing to do to get the job done. Sure, he did some bad things in Seasons 1 & 2, but nothing quite like Season 3. It was the most ruthless "accomplish at all costs" Jack we'd ever seen (and pretty much the standard going forward). -He was willing to execute his boss -He was willing to kill his partner in cold blood -He was willing to kill an innocent girl because she was a pressure point -He was (begrudgingly) willing to let his own daughter risk herself in the field "These are the things I was running away from," as he tells Audrey the next season. He hated what he'd become.

i disagree, he cried for Cloudia he promised her along with her family out of Mexico but he failed her and died, Ryan Chapelle he shot him himself, Chase he chopped his hand. The man lost his soul totally. He doesn't even know himself anymore, whoever wrote this DAY WAS genius bcs he took the psychology into account and respected our minds cuz thats what really happen to a Human after like this day

This scene actually shows why kiefer sutherland is suited to play Big Boss. If you think about it , Big Boss , solid snake and all the snakes are quite similar to jack in 24. They dont create any of horrors of the world but are forced to deal with it and the expense of their soul.

It's actually really ambiguous as to why he's crying. Probably lots of reasons. Personally, I think the main one is that he wishes he could put his family first like Chase has done by deciding to retire from field work, but he knows it's something he's incapable of doing.

I don't know how one can't understand it straight away. For me it was absolutely obvious. He wasn't ready to kill anyone innocent EVER, only if ABSOLUTELY NECESSARY - as the utmost end resort! Only at the end, when the crisis was over, he could allow himself but a brief moment (also interrupted) to feel the full scale of the events that unfolded - more specifically the killing of Ryan Chappelle, he allowed himself to feel the full impact of the deed he was forced to commit: the execution of that poor bastard and cried his soul out in the car, alone, when nobody saw him. This moment is the pinnacle of what happens to a man with exceptional abilities but a very good heart, when he is forced to do what may be difficult even for a stone cold killer, again and again and again. Epic moment! When I 1st seen it, I loved it, I was there with him in the car, crying. I repeated the moment playing it back 3 or 4 times until I consumed my tears. I had the luxury he didn't: nobody called me to interrupt me until I was done! PS: he must have thought. Who's gonna do it? Did anyone ask that question? Nobody! He answers it before anyone asks it anyway! He just does what's necessary, regardless of the personal detriment, taking the blame and the blood from everyone else's hands. I never imagined I'd like Kiefer Sutherland, but after he played Bauer, I love the guy. Presently I'm watching Designated Survivor just because of that, and it's not bad either.
