I've been looking at these cool J230d aircraft for a bit. I have a curious question for this owner. He mentioned he flies all day between airports due to his 3.5GPH burn rate. He also mentioned he did this while travelling with his wife. I'm trying to figure out how that works while staying under the LSA max 1320lb gross weight. Per Jabiru: Empty Weight is 850lbs Usable Weight is 470lbs If we assume an 8hr day of flying while burning 3.5GPH, he's at a minimum of 28 gallons of fuel. If you factor in a couple gallons of reserves at the absolute minimum, then you are at about 180lbs minimum for fuel. I'm sure you can see where I'm going with this. We are now down to 290lbs of useful load (after accounting for fuel) for 2 adults and their luggage for a 3 week trip. I just don't understand how he's doing this. Am I missing something? My only conclusion would be that he's going over gross weight due to the original airframe rating (the j430) being 1540lbs. That certainly would give him plenty of leeway to do what he's mentioning, but it would also mean he couldn't fly it with his sport pilot certificate and the aircraft would no longer be E-LSA rated. What am I missing?

If registered as a Basic Ultralight or an Advanced Ultralight you can fly it with an Ultralight License. The Ultralight Flyer
