Jabba's Palace Song, 1983 version

Ойын-сауық

The original song from Jabba's Palace, with a totally different vibe. This is the one that old people who grew up in the 70s and 80s always talk about. I like to think of it as "the version without the heavily-salivating singer creature". Captured from the 1995 VHS "One Last Time" edition.

The CGI Sly Snootle looks better than the puppet, which if we're being honest looked pretty bad. What I don't like is how the new version is so in your face. Cinematography also is very effective in this original version of the scene. Even the timing of the cut to “trophy Solo” in the background, while the music is playing, adds to the disturbing, “messed-up” quality, in terms of the picture of Jabba’s psychology. Solo on display is like Jabba’s trophy; the dancer is like his sex slave…. The lighting is dark and somber. Everything comes together tonally, in terms of dark and more than a little perverse, and the effect disturbs. I’m going to guess that “we’ll original version is dated” was a subterfuge and that Lucas was persuaded to make this scene more kid friendly.

For some reason, I love that they game Boba Fett a whole couple second scene of him looking serious and grabbing his wrist, like he was physically keeping himself from moving to the beat.

The shots are really reminiscent of Casablanca. Plus, directors from this era were far better at creating the illusion of space than modern directors simply because they had nothing but practical effects to work with. Angling through doorways and seating booths instead of showing the entire room span right away...and those are just two examples of how they accomplished that. The technique helps gives texture and substance to the intended "vibe" of Jabba's palace as well. Shots now days can often be way too revealing, way too soon. It might be great for the eye, but it's lazy for the mind and obviously geared for the shorter attention spans of these younger generations.

To me the visuals of this original were way better as well. The altered version looks like Pixar and the male singer CGI character just feels totally out of place. I prefer this by far, both the music and visuals. Wayyyy less cringe than the terrible altered version lol

The one edit from Jabbas Palace I can appreciate is showing what happened after the green woman (she has a name I think but I genuinely don't remember it) gets dropped into the pit. That honestly added to the tension of the scene more than whatever the fuck George did to the song

This slaps so hard compared to the new version. Legitimately the only thing the new version does better is that one little frog alien jamming out on the harmonica in the beginning. Other than that this version blows the revised version straight out of the water.

I'll be real. I fuck with both. I watched this on tape as a kiddo and it was great, still is. By the time I was old enough to understand why people were upset about this scene, I was so deeply enraptured by the Star Wars universe that it didn't matter what song played or how much CGI there was in the new version. Way I see it is we got one hell of a star wars movie and two banger songs to go with it!
