J.S. BACH "Little Fugue" (for Trumpet Quartet)

Bach’s “Fugue in G Minor,” commonly referred to as his “Little Fugue,” was written while he was a young and gaining in popularity at Arnstadt (1703-1707). The theme is well recognized and the piece is among his most well known works. Here is a challenging but playable setting for trumpet quartet. I want to give a special shoutout regarding the instrument I am playing in the video: the JP Smith-Watkins Bb Trumpet (Bb Trumpet: JP251SW). This is an “intermediate level” trumpet that plays as well as most professional line instruments, for a much nicer price.

As a struggling trumpet player myself, a tone like yours is what ive wanted forever. Absolutely incredible performance, bravo.

Man, what a performance! Trumpet fugue renditions are so beautiful, and I can’t imagine how much work it must’ve taken to play so perfectly in time for each part

Thanks for saying. I play through these passages, often, many times to get it just right. I don’t claim it is a “live” performance. I hope to do another soon. I worked on a “Contrapunctus IX” arrangement a while back. Maybe a little later this year.

The tone is probably the best ive heard, especially on the low range and how it sounds the same from low through high and the exact same through the 4 recordings

I played this with 3 other trumpets for state solo and ensemble competition. We won all state. I have been looking for a 4 trumpet version of this for decades. So happy that I found it! Thank you for putting this out there on the interwebz! VERY well done!

Glad you like it. Toughest part is the 4th! Mainly due to the lowered key. Lot of low F’s. Those can be up the octave, but it’s way better with them. I have pretty extensive notes on how to accomplish those extended range notes, as well as the crazy D-to-Eb trill. Hard, but worth it. I was so proud of myself when I was finally able to play it!

That's so interesting! Indeed, it's a very challenging piece. I feel like I played a much easier version, because i was able to play it well in high school. I'll listen to it again with a focus on your points. Any tips on where specifically you are talking about would be great. I am now 53, so it's been a very long time since I played this piece. @@TheMusicofDrewFennell

@@peytonellsworth9701, you can see I put 4th part as a closeup for a couple spots-the player on the far right of the video. This demonstrates what I’m talking about. I extend my third slide all the way, bringing all 3rd valve notes down a half step. Then I use alternate fingerings. It’s all explained, in great detail, in the performance notes of the sheet music.

Glad you enjoy it! That 4th part took a ton of work, haha. It’s one thing to *know* you need to use a false fingering. It’s another matter entirely getting the message to your fingers.

Thanks! For me, It’s been a good experience. I purposefully requested the middle-of-the-road flugel and trumpet. The flugel is okay, but the trumpet is outstanding. For under $1k, you get a horn that is only a little under a top-end horn. I still say I’d prefer my Strad., but I definitely do not hate playing the JP. Outstanding value!

The harmony would be more balanced if it were done with soprano, alto, tenor and bass instruments. Only with soprano instruments it is beautiful but it is not within Bach's range. From Brazil
