It is a Christmas chorale from the Orgelbüchlein, this collection which was a very particular project of J. S. Bach: the idea was to write a piece for each title of the collection of chorales used in worship. 46 pieces out of the project 164 were actually composed, for the others, there is the title and a blank page, Bach had proceeded in this way, he had prepared a notebook, traced all the staves, put all the titles, and composed the chorales, not necessarily in order (the 46 completed are not the first 46. These are often forms with the cantus firmus (that is to say the quotation of the melody of the chorale, in long values), from the first note of the piece, and without interludes, often with a rich polyphony in the other voices. This form was not used before Bach, very shortly after: it is one of the things in music invented by J. S. Bach.
