This is a chorale from the Orgelbüchlein, for Christmas time. The melody is directly borrowed from Gregorian chant.
The general meaning of the text: "We must praise the son of the pure Virgin Mary, as far as the dear sun shines and reaches the ends of the world".
The melody from Gregorian chant gives the impression of being particularly spread out, evoking a sort of infinite and luminous horizon.
This piece for organ is a marvel of polyphony. The melodies of the different voices unfold freely and appropriately in very wide ranges, willingly making the very low and the very high notes heard simultaneously. Each note has its place and contributes to the whole, which flows wonderfully, often towards rich and intense harmonies.
