This is my all-time favourite Bach cantata, and this is his second of two recordings, in which Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau recorded and the first recording was made in 1952 with the Karl Ristenpart Chamber Orchestra conducted by Karl Ristenpart [who passed away in Portugal on Christmas Eve 1967- the year I was born] with Hermann Tochtter as the oboist in the first recording in mono, and originally released in 1953 on vinyl for Archiv Produktion.

This is so exquisitely beautiful that I almost can’t bear to listen to it…..it’s hard to believe that a mere human has all together a matchless voice, an intense sensitivity to text and music, and a technique which allows complete freedom for the other two to express whatever DF-D wanted.

It is enough. I have held the Savior, the hope of all peoples, In the warm embrace of my arms. It is enough. I have seen him, My faith has impressed Jesus on my heart; Now I wish this very day To depart from here with joy. 2 Recitativo B 2 Recitation Continuo Ich habe genug. It is enough. My one consolation is this: That I am Jesus’ beloved and he is mine. In faith, I hold him. For in Simeon, I already see The joy of life to come. Let us go forth with Simeon! Ah! if only the Lord Would free me from my body’s enslavement; Ah! if indeed my liberation were soon, With joy I would say to you, O World, It is enough. 3 Aria B 3 Song Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo Schlummert ein, ihr matten Augen, Fallet sanft und selig zu! Slumber, my weary eyes, Fall softly and close in contentment. O World, I will linger here no more. For indeed, I find nothing in you Pleasing to my soul. Here I am resigned to misery, But there, there I shall feel Sweet peace and quiet rest. My God! When will I hear that precious word: “Now!” Then I will depart in peace, And rest both here in the humus of the cool earth And there within your bosom. My departure is at hand, O World, good night! 5 Aria B 5 Song Oboe, Violino I/II, Viola, Continuo Ich freue mich auf meinen Tod, Ach, hätt er sich schon eingefunden. With gladness, I look forward to my death, (Ah! if only it had already come.) Then shall I escape all despair That still enslaves me now on earth.

"Ich habe genug" means "I have enough", or, it may mean "I have had enough of this". The most beautiful of Bach´s cantatas. He might have been in the same situation as many composers a few centuries ago. It was obligatory to use religious subject matter if you wanted to have your music out in the open. Thus, very many excellent multi-tasked musical endeavors had to be masked to religious texts. Especially in oratorios, choir works. Very good music is very good music, even hundreds of years later.

Bach was deeply Christian. "I've had enough" is the singing of Simeon as he sees the newborn Jesus when his parents bring him to the temple of Jerusalem. He is is an old man that was told he wouldn't die before having seen the Messiah. When he sees him, he sings that he's had enough and can leave this world. It is a song of joy and accomplishment. In the penultimate part, he sings to make his eyes go to sleep, for they have seen salvation. It sounds like a lullaby for the baby. Bach saw his work as a glorification of God. Somebody said : "If someone owe's everything to Bach, it's God".

...and let's hear it for the organ continuo player : delightful little 'tootles' here and there in the arias, and most sensitive accompaniment in the recitatives! Continuo players are often so under-valued [like piano-players in Big Bands, and Altos in choirs] - take them away and you soon see the deficit! :-)

Oboe is wonderful but needs placement nearer to the microphone to pick up on the finer wood tones in the lower notes. Voice and oboe need equal microphone placement.
