I've answered this before on here: In children's publishing, it (was) a big no-no to write about children going to (boarding) school, as publishers didn't think there was enough escapism for children to be interested. i.e. it would be a waste of time and money in publishing such a book

+Runa Leahy I remember hearing the fist book discussed on Radio 4, soon after it had come out, and some daft bimbo actually said she thought that to set it in a boarding school was not such a good idea, and that J. K. Rowling should have shown *more imagination*! (Moral of the story: If something is outstandingly good, there will always be some ass who will try to show how much better *they* are, by adversely criticizing it.)

+Offshoreorganbuilder tbh when you wonder, it really isnt somehow original or innovative idea. In fact, setting plot of each book in period of one school season and setting action in boarding school is not original by any means. Anyway these are brilliant ideas, even if the concept wasnt new. Why searching for sophistication where it isnt needed and even allowed? I guess this bimbo wasnt realising that it is the balance between imaginary&ordinary what makes fantasy world work.

About 9/10 years ago, I was travelling in a taxi with my mother in Edinburgh and I'd been reading the 'Prisoner of Azkaban' on the plane. The driver saw the book in my hands and he said I was in the same seat JK Rowling sat a few weeks ago!

ScottieGirl20 I bumped into her once, in Edinburgh. She was coming out of her cafe down the road from the Royal Mile, which runs from the Scottish Parliament to the Castle. Her cafe is just a few doors away from a restaurant I eat at every time I go to Edinburgh. She's a real lovely lady. Funny too.

Read up on Tolkien's life and that's real inspiration, the man lost dear friends during the war and was heavily educated. Even after selling Lord of the Rings the biggest series on the planet it still wasn't what he would call his finest work, he had so many ideas that never got published. J.K. Rowling got a lot of work cut out for her because of LotR as it was not unheard of for a fantasy book to sell more than The Bible by the time she grew in popularity.

I remember the thrill of when a new Harry Potter book was released: it was like Christmas. I remember being 13-14 yrs and not having the patience to wait for the translation, so I bought it in English as soon it was released and curled myself up in a chair with the book and a heavy dictionary for hours, meticulously looking up each word that I did not understand. It is strange how going back to the books now, I still get the same sort of feeling as I did about 10 years ago. It feels like a safe place.

wow!! but omg so true that it feels like a safe place. im sure a lot of people can relate. when my parents would fight i would burry myself in the books and escape into a magical world. it really was my safe place. i learned to stop caring and letting their anger affect me so much. i remember one time we were on vacation and in the hotel room, my parents were fighting. i had no where to go, no where to hide so i sat as far away from them as possible and read the 6th book which had recently been released. i remember reading the part where everyone is in the gryffindor common room and ginny has just won the quidditch match and harry gives ginny that shocking kiss in front of everyone. i was so shocked that i felt my face turn bright red. the book just makes you feel so much. the joy, the happiness, the friendship, the pain. i wonder what i wouldnt give to be able to be a part of the gryffindor common room and roam the hogwarts castle. it wouldve been nice if the movie had also portrayed harry and ginnys relationship in a better way, they were very awkward and totally missed the essence in the movies

That was her message, loving no matter how hard it is and no matter how much it hurts to do so, we must keep fighting the darkness through the magic of love.

It should be illegal to dig into someone's PRIVATE life without their permission, or if their not dead for historical purposes. Like how rude could you be digging into things that are none of your business. A person has the right to keep their life private if they want to. And it should be their choice and free will to spill beans about things in their life and no one else.

Rory Pavić Well, that's what I mean. Some people think that just because a person , like JKR herself, is in the public eye, that gives people the right to dig into their personal life. Which is not right. No one, famous or not famous should have their privacy invaded. But also an exception to this is Private Investigators, which people hire to dig into people's lives, WHICH again, I don't think it's right.

My parents were one of the religious nuts who actually kept me off school one day so that I couldn't participate in Harry Potter Day because they were against witchcraft. Therefore I never experienced the phenomena and convinced myself that I wasn't missing out. Until I got to high school- Year 11- and read the first book. And I have been a massive fan ever since. And I now realize why I like both the books and J K Rowling so much. In particular, I understand why I connected so easily to Hermione Granger, because I was that swotty, deeply insecure kid at school who always wanted to get the highest grades and considered a B as a failure. I also smiled and nodded my head when J K Rowling talked about her books being books for "obsessives", because that reminds me so much of the books I like; ones where there is so much detail and I know, as she says, everything about the world. I found the descriptions of Hogwarts set texts, quills and cauldrons deeply satisfying. I LOVED the description of the Hogwarts library. The genius of these books is their appeal to a sceptical teenager such as I was. The moral questions and deep emotionality that runs through Harry's life are what have rightfully earned J K Rowling the respect from children, adults and fellow authors alike today. Truly my favourite children's books and one of my favourites in general.

This is very inspiring, I loved the fact that she was given the mission to start writing the first book and she listened to that inner voice and actually started writing. Makes me wonder how many of us have that inspiration to do something we really want and then we try to quiet it down by fear. Lets allow our imagination to fly and fulfill our purpose in this world.

Am I the only one who just cries all the video long because Jo is not only because of Harry Potter but also in personal such a wonderful person and I just realized how thankful I am that she wrote those books because they mean a lot to me. It's like, every time I feel sad, and start rereading a Hp book, it's really like escaping from this terrible world and living for a few hours and Harry's perfect world. Every time I'm watching a video, doesn't matter if it's a making of Harry Potter or a Interview with Jo or one of the actresses, I get so emotional, start crying, just wishing Hogwarts is real. I'd really like to meet her and talk all day long about Harry Potter , what I liked, how it'll be if I go to Hogwarts, but Jo loves most about specific characters, I could talk about hours about Hp and I would to do it with her.

I think Harry Potter is an essential memory for anyone born between the year 1990 and 2001. I too remember the first time I went to go and see it. What had happened was my school had given out free copies of the first book--I didn't know what it was and I didn't care for reading, but the book was part of "reading log" and reading it was mandatory. I will never forget putting that book down and immediately begging my mom to take me to Barnes and Noble to get the second one (I didn't know about the third and fourth one being out as well). When the first movie came out, we went to go see it and I still remember seeing everyone from school there who had, coincidentally, read the book as well. We too were mesmerized by the film...And the whole phenomenon really took off when the second movie came out. All that mattered was "the next Harry Potter film". How I loved it dearly, and still do. WE ALL DO! If Time Travel suddenly became real, I would most definitely choose to leave my college academic career behind to relive the magic and the simplistic innocence of my childhood.

What a brilliant person. Truly humble and very much down to earth. She never had the fame or money get to her. The emotion and effort truly shined in her books, it never wavered. I've never really known the person behind the books and I am glad I watched all the documentaries about her. I am also very much an aspiring writer that loves to write fantasy, and much like she was I am still struggling financially in life. But I am not saddened by the notion of being born in such a given situation. It has helped me realize how important it is to see life from a different perspective, the struggles of life itself, the hunt for your inner workings to manifest. What you truly want in life. I hope to write and keep writing, until with a bit of luck, publish my first novel. Like her series I agree that the current state of being that you were when you write, reflects heavily upon your work. My work is very dark, very grey, it's about death, supremacy, finding yourself, maternity, struggle of depression and fighting the evil from within yourself through an intricate storyline, of engraved messages within the complex characters and their choices within the book. Seven years ago, I never would have thought that I would be writing, day and night, stories of fascinating creatures, of intricate magical societies and their laws, the creation of vast worlds brimming with life. It is the collective inspiration and motivation that each and every writer shares and upholds the art that is writing, that allows us to dream the impossible feats, and soar the impassible obstacles. To explore the inner workings of our deepest wishes and desires, in this vast collective of brilliant minds of this era.

+GrandvisionStudio That sounds quite interesting, a lot of relatable themes and who doesn't love fantasy themed books? You should definitely do a shoutout here to the name/s of your work when you have it.

I am 100% sure she was talking about Dumbledore when she said she had written a death that was extremely difficulty to write because she has stated that same thing on other interviews but did reveal it was Dumbledore then. Plus it is no secret that Dumbledore is one of her favorite creations and shes really fond of him.

The ending in book 7 huh.. When she had that envelope she already knew how the Snape plot was going to unfold.. I wonder if she knew How the now ULTRA famous, tear jerking single word "Always" was going to affect people. Snape's worst memory is probably one of my favorite chapters.

What JK Rowling’s says means nothing to me. It’s what she has written is the most important. The writing is so good can’t judge how important it is to the Literary world. The young cast of Harry Potter should thank their luck stars for her. They still be chasing that dream being part of most incredible series.

Hi! just a word to anyone who is concerned about the effects of "witchcraft and occultism" on their children. I was raised in a good Christian family, and I was raised with Harry Potter. Literally I was a year older than he was as the later books were published, and I began reading the first ones when I was about 13. From the Christian stand-point, I didn't even consider switching religions but rather I enjoyed looking at all the virtues that the books portrayed, maybe not the idea Rowling had in mind, but even to this day, I live and thrive on virtues like courage, honesty, perseverance. I feel that Harry Potter did shape out the best aspects of me. And on the deaths or suffering, if your concerned about that... I was never sheltered from those topics in media or anything, and it didn't have a negative outcome and it actually helped when I entered the healthcare field of work. BUUUUT if your still concerned about it, my sister (another Potter Fan) came up with the brilliant solution of letting her younger children just have the first book and movie until they are teenagers or their maturity deems fit they are ready. Raised with Harry, so will my children.

Watching this while I’m reading Order of the Phoenix makes me appreciate the books more. Also I when she’s teases Deathly Hollows at the end of this doc, I’m like, ey I have that on my finger tips, all those secrets on that folder, I could uncover it whenever I like it! Brilliant peace of work! Thank you Ms. Rowling!
