Exceptional rhythm section in this concert, Jack DeJohnette (some of his best playing) and Miroslav Vitous. DeJohnette is the standout in this whole show, some of the best playing of his career here. Impressions has one of Braxton's best solos on Impressions, wild in places yet controlled. Metheny has an excellent solo on Broadway Blues as well as a great bowed solo by bassist Miroslav Vitous. Chick Corea has a unique and unexpected introduction to Stella by Starlight, duo with Lee Konitz. His playing a little too busy for Konitz but there is some very interesting and creative interplay. Konitz has an intimacy and soulfulness here. and Konitz changes to a much less warm nasally tone for All Blues. Dejohnette explosive on this and Corea very percussive. Vitous takes another one of his fine bowed solos.

I just stumbled on this. It was one of the best concerts i've been to, & that's saying a lot (I've been to 3662)! Was my 38th show (15th jazz) Was on a soccer field in the actual town of Woodstock, NY on 9/19/81. Poured for 4 hours after it was supposed to start @ noon. Ended at like midnight. Spent a couple of hours in a dugout after sitting under the soundboard for awhile until it got too wet. Stood a couple of feet from Chick Corea while he was interviewed. Even remember getting a burrito in town.

This is Jack's best sound, IMO, along with the 602 setup with Miles. The Sound Creations were far more complex sounding. The Sonor Phonics always kill, as well. Jack stopped playing this 4-piece kind of setup almost a decade earlier, so it's fascinating to hear his 1981 conception on a standard kit.

From 23:42 to 34:32 This has to be a one of those greatest few moments in the history of jazz, where the improvisation and interpretion approaches and gets near the spiritual level of John Coltranes musical dimentions, but while at the same time accomplishing to manifest its own personality and the soul onto, and within, the structural base level of the foundations of jazz music. And also arguably the best 10 minutes and 50 seconds I've almost ever in my life spent on concentrating on any kind of waveform-based art performance

I 100% agree. Braxton's compositions are good but i feel his style is shown at its peak in band situations like this. His playing is just so visceral and confident to an extent Ive never heard before. Also, the entire rest of the lineup playing with him including chick and dejohnette makes the experience even better.

The Guess the Song between Anthony Braxton and Lee Konitz with Chick Corea and Hal Galper looking on! Priceless. Historically interesting too. Lee liked to sing and he loved The Song Is You.
