    My first move in RX is checking and resolving phase rotation issues, this can often give you, depending on the mix, 2 to 4dB more headroom…

    The insights on using this tool to focus on low- and high-frequency amplitude detail is probably the most effective way I have seen to approaching re-balancing a bad mix in mastering. Adjusting the amplitude range to visually isolate the bass, kick, and snare to assess their relative energy and bandwidth has made improving these relationships with EQ lightning quick, as there is no more need for sweeping around to find the fundamentals and the Q. In addition to that, being able to make a few rough EQ moves in the app and rendering it out to see how the moves have actually affected the energy provides the insight you need to start making those corrections with your ears in the actual mastering phase. Brilliant; thank you.

    Ok… I guess I need to watch these videos multiple times because it’s all coming back to me now. I was pre occupied with the low end attenuation thing and the phase discussion we had in the comments I forget you went over it so clearly in the begging of this one. I think its a good thing to do for mix prep because it’s not hurting anything and regardless of how effective it may be on some material it’s good practice to prioritize quality like that. Bravo!

    Thank you KZread gods for sending me this, and THANK YOU Panorama MixMaster for putting up this video. I already did all that on occasion and without adjusting the spectogram, but touching up the bass and sibilance with them settings is just a walk in the park, I'll keep running my chains as is and just prepping files this way, relaxing everything that can be relaxed. Just more done with targeted processing, less is more, more is more, I don't know where this workflow fits in but it is awesome!

    Another thing I check and often fix on RX before getting down to mastering is phase rotation. The amount of songs, specially those heavy on synths, have so much DC offset killing your headroom and sometimes adding distortion when you pass it through analog gear. Great video!

    Yeap! Definitely when it's a big issue I'm using this feature too; however I need to look more into it; as there are some instruments like horns, trumpets which have naturally occurring asymmetric wave-forms, and I want to do some blind A/B's on this material to see if it negatively impacts the sonics at all;

    Hello, Cool video. I am having trouble understanding how -16 - .02 = 6.2. Can you please explain what I am missing? If the crest factor is equal to the integrated minus the peak wouldn't that be .02+16=16.2?

    Very interesting! Have you seens the spectral clipper by newfangled audio, called saturate? It essentially clips things but keeps the detail to avoid those flat tops that traditional clipping causes. I'm wondering if I could set it to clip like 2-3db db of gain at most before my master chain and have effectivly the same thing as you did in RX here. Some food for thought, if u ever make a video on the subject I would 100% watch it.

    My computer is shitting the bed with those spectrogram settings. Trying to use the De-ess technique outlined here. For some reason every time I print my master and reference it on other speakers the sibilance in particular spots is a noticeable issue. Really weird because sometimes I will de-ess two or three times throughout my vocal chain. If I push it any further it messes with the ess sound, and I can't typically notice the issues on my ATH-M50x's. So frustrating...

    Awesome! A couple things that could be helpful - The "Instant Process" option can make those gain reductions by selection a little faster. Low End Focus in Ozone is similar to what you're doing to the kick. It has a "contrast" parameter that boosts the prominent bass information (kick and bass) while reducing the less prominent information (mud and noise). It's inspired by the spectrogram and the way image editors can apply contrast to an image.

    P.s I just realised what you were refering to with the instant process option; I actually don't use that as I prefer to get a new read out of the selected region to decide whether or not to attenuate one channel or both;

    I’m curious.. when you use RX the way you did with the selective frequency gain on the kick drum it’s very similar to how an EQ works. Do you happen to know what sort of effect that has on phase? Does it alter the phase the same way as normal eq does or is it more like linear phase in that sense?

  • @panorama_mastering

    Hey David; I'll be honest I'm not completely sure; I've actually in other circumstances flipped the phase of the original mix against an edited one; and it cleanly blocks out where I made that boost and attenuation (Probably should have included that in this video in hindsight) I'll look more into this now though; because I too am curious; warmly,, N.

    Do you ever alter the phase rotation with RX? I started doing that after i saw Bob Ludwig demonstrate it in a video. It can usually buy you 0.5 of headroom, simply by evening out the phase rotation. The sound doesn't change at all but the meter readings do. Pretty crazy Edit: Sorry it wasn't Bob Ludwig, it was John Mayfield: kzread.info/dash/bejne/hamNqLmeiNiroqw.html

    Yeah I've seen this; when I have particularly problematic symmetry in a mix I will; However the verdict is out on this; reason being, some instruments produce naturally assymetric wave forms (Horns for example) Other engineers (Bob Katz) have said they won't do this on every master blindly because for asymmetric waveforms from instruments like horns it can change the tone; My take? I can't confirm neither deny this is a good idea based on experience, because I'm yet to do my own blind testing to see if this is a worthwhile technique to expore!
