IWC | Portugieser Automatic 40mm 2020 | Review

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

You may know IWC for their authentic aviation history and iconic pilots’ watches, yet despite this, the Portuguiser remains their top-selling watch. Introduced in 1939 it’s etymology is tied to its first customers, two prominent Portuguese businessmen seeking a wrist-worthy marine chronometer to wear while travelling. For 2020 IWC return to the 30’s roots of this watch and unveiled four subtle 40mm variants - we got hands-on with the Steel cased, white dialled version to see if the upgraded movement and design capture our imagination.

Its not the watch they need to shrink, its the price it’s too expensive. That being said it’s a beautiful piece that looks very high quality. Great review Sir 👍 Tam.

Made it to the AD but conmfirmed what I knew. The 40(.5) is too big for an all dial small bezel watch. For a 40mm it wear to large, esp in white. A true 38.5mm would be perfect for most occasions. And get it down to 11m m thick. I would have paid full retail. Usual iwc story, they have plenty of big watches already

I don't understand why this thing needed to be 12.3mm thick despite having no complications and no water resistance. The Portuguese Chrono is only 13mm thick. This auto 40 really should be around 8 to 9mm thick.

Because, they are being forced to make their own movement because ETA doesn't want to sell thier movements outside of swatch. This mean they can call themselves in house but that doesn't make them the best or thinnest yet. A true 38-39mm version at 10-11mm then I would take it.

12.3 mm is not really a thick watch. when you're going into the 8mm range you're starting to look at 'thin' watches. This watches bring a huge price increase because of the complication of designing movements that are thinner. but I tried it on and it looks perfectly proportional. so even though you're right it could have been thinner I don't think it makes it a bad choice.

I know this is late - but I think what they meant is IWC actually did an in house movement with meaningful upgrades, whereas other manufacturers are copying ETA's design, dressing it up, and making it "in house".

I acquired one myself and I was told by the agent that the Portugieser 40 winds counter clockwise. I didn't believe it at first but I found it to be true the first time I let the power reserve run down to zero. Doing clockwise did nothing even after more than 10 rotations. After 5 or so counterclockwise winding, the seconds hand started moving. Cheers!

@@OracleTimeTV The watch winds counterclockwise. At first I thought the winding mechanism was faulty, so my AD contacted IWC to double check - they confirmed it is the only model to wind in counterclockwise fashion. A few twists in this direction confirms this. Very odd if you ask me - IWC ought to state this in the instruction manual.

Nice direction they are heading to. But it is still too big. They need to shrink down all of their watches to 36-37mm and pilots to 40-42mm. Their watches are too thick as well. They need to update and refine their movement and preferably ditch the auto wind module to decrease the overal thickness even further. And I have not even started about the accuracy and price of these watches. This brand has a lot of issues that have been left untackled for many years now. I love their design but realisticly i don't see my self owning an IWC ever.
