As a kid growing up in the 50s and 60s I was lucky enough to see double headers whenever Penn played Princeton at the Palestra. There was always another Big 5 school playing in the second game. My dad, a Princeton tiger, would drive us from Princeton down to Philly. It was always a great twinbill. Although we despised Penn it was always exciting to see games played at the Palestra.

I was born in 1960 and started following basketball in the late sixties. I grew up in South Jersey, close to Philadelphia, and got all the Big Five games on television. For some reason, and I’m not sure why, I chose Penn as my favorite team. They were so damn good in those days. My father took me to my first game at the Palestra in 1973, against Princeton. Penn lost. It was their first conference loss at home in about five years. For some reason, I’ve never hated Princeton even though I always root against them. In fact, I always root for the Ivy League winner in the NCAA tournament k even though they rarely go very far.

When I was in college (not a Penn student), I covered a Penn basketball game at the Palestra on a Friday night, wrote my story, finished around midnight, was last person in the gym at that point and walked to the middle of the court. It was a very cool personal moment knowing the history of it and growing up loving Philly college hoops

The Lavietes Pavilion was just a field house back in the day. I toured it as a kid at the Harvard summer basketball camp in the late 70s. Basketball back then was at the Malkin Center which is now used for volleyball. Looking for a building with character? That’s the one. Lavietes back then had no stands. It was basically four walls, that skylight roof and a dirt floor. They had a baseball diamond set up so to allow for infield practice.
