    The election in US is very important. If US still want to enjoy democracy in the west, they must vote blue. Wether they like Biden or not. He will not be in office for so long, but at least he will be replaced with someone how cares about democracy. The other option is catastrophic for our way of living.

It is painful to me to see the arrogant stupidity with which the free world is wasting away their position to the thugs.

    you are supporting genocide. remember this. this is a karmic sin for the rest of your miserable life: La Vanguardia believes that Ukraine has lost the demographic war: the population is aging and there are few young people. The average age of the military is 43 years old, the volunteers are already at the front, and the rest have left. Lack of human resources leads to problems with mobilization. Lowering the mobilization age and sending young people to the front threatens a demographic catastrophe: there will be no one to start families and give birth to children. Even after winning the war, Ukraine may lose the peace.

    If we had actual leaders, rather than neo-liberal market force ideologues in charge, then they would already know all of this, and be acting on it. Instead, our electorates continue to put more of the same in power, because not only Russia's disinformation but our own consumerism keeps us from wanting to deal with the harsh realities of disruptors like Putin. What Putin calls our decadence, our weakness, and what he is relying on to bring him victory. I do wonder where a Churchill, a Roosevelt, or even a de Gaulle (!) might come from. All we've had instead are Johnson in the UK and Macron in France sticking their heads above the parapet. Well, Johnson is gone from power, while others are deriding or laughing at Macron for his attempts. Instead of leaders, we're relying on "the market" to solve the Russian problem?!

    Ivana really makes good points. One thing I might add that wasn’t said is that she strongly promotes democracy, and it is a great thing, but we should understand that the rule of law to support liberty is even more important than democracy. A dictator can be elected in a democracy. So the understanding of the principles of liberty and the laws to support and maintain liberty which includes the rights of the individual are even more important than the establishment of democracy. Perhaps when she promoted the rule of law (which is so vitally important) that is what she was talking about.

  • @_Stroda

    @_Stroda

    Should democratic countries be aiming to 'destroy' autocracy? Is autocracy universally unpopular? Is it universally bad (or otherwise worse than democracy) for the majority of citizens under it? Isn't there a clear difference between a leader like Putin, who is a clear threat to Russia's neighbours, and an 'autocrat' like Lee Kuan Yew, whose focus was essentially improving Singapore. When it comes to intervention aimed at bringing about democracy, the track record of 'The West' is mixed but has often been pretty dire. Promotion of democracy in ex-Soviet states has been relatively successful. But these are the neighbours of European states. They've kept the attention of The West because of this. There are clear, tangible benefits to promoting democracy here. When it comes to meddling further afield? Eh. I could see Afghanistan, even Iraq, having turned out differently BUT it would have required many, many years of effort, during which significantly greater resources would need to have been expended. E.g. the level of involvement the US showed, and continues to show, in Japan and South Korea. It's simply not realistic to expect this in more than a handful of strategically important countries. Hal- hearted interventions push the countries which suffer them, and those that can identify with them, away from democracy and The West. In most instances, I'd argue that a more effective approach would be to leave them alone politically and focus upon providing well targeted, meaningful aid, whilst doing something to get western countries in order. Stagnating, if not declining, living standards, the rise of populist types like Trump, Johnson and Le Pen, along with the instability they cause and are a symptom of, does very little to promote democracy.

    So much logic being presented here. Please shout your messages louder and more often. There is an ignorant mass needing to hear your wisdom, learning, experiences. Thank you. I arrived at this offering of the opinion that, unbendingly, Tsar Putrid must be stopped. By the end of this I understand Tsar Putrid must be stopped no matter the cost, the methods, the risk or even the outcome. It cannot be worse than doing nothing.

    greetings from germany. I am a bi in a bubble of people who swallow with pleasure what the kremlin delivers. I try to question that in a kind and subtle way. social mediais a demeritorical good in my view. there is more harm in it than gain, especially in free speech-societies. because bad actors abuse that massively.

    Putin looked seriously ill during the meeting, heavily drugged and exhausted, which of course makes him weaker in every sense. The North Korean leaders exposed a heavy show, with a lot of imposing music, but in spite of being heavy, it also looked utterly primitive, not totally well coordinated and rather cheap. Most of the music were just repetitions of the same simple tonal and rhythmical phrases. Furthermore, everybody looked weak from starvation, except the political and military leaders.

    Dr Stradner gave what I thought was a very good understanding of the situation, featuring a realist bent. As escalation management slips, we see the spill over into Asia with the rearming of NK. This is entirely unsurprising.

    Naaa, like all things, in the US, Canada... with liberty, civic rights... comes the possibility of spectrums being everywhere, as opposed to the absolute supreme leader one point of view, hive mind, persistent fear... nope: Spectrums. If one tried to depict so called "American" culture, one must assess and compute all spectrums and represent them in real time and as woven into a mass too scary to even imagine, in authoritarian regimes. To use one qualificative to represent an infinity of morphing points of views and many things not even represented yet... is an exercise in futility, an insult to life itself. Being depicted as one thing doesn't make this depiction reality; grunt work to consider all things in real time might depict a much better picture and bring an understanding worthy of consideration. There are brilliant people, and people collaborate with other brilliant people, in "America" and is a sharp contrast to any and all autocratic regimes, and will always be the ideal of these anti-democratic regimes, wanting to have it all but through slavery, destruction, terror... a death cult. NK, CCP Land, Putin Land populations, the majority, is maintained absolutely ignorant by design. A little bit of this is quite true ass well in the West, as a spectrum, but the knowledge is available and protected; not systematically suppressed and replaced by fictions.
