    ) When I watched this it was very strange. ) Greeeting from Russia. When yankee made this movie, were a lot of discussions about amateur sport. All said that government and state should not help amateur athletes. And bad soviet (KGB, gulag) cheated good USA. Very funny now )))

    @@mariacarvalho4613 yes, I used to have a wood burning stove and loved splitting firewood. But it is no eplacement for a training camp lmfao. Drago was out sparring and everything while Rocky was doing man vs wild. It works great as contrast in the film but in real life it wouldn't have been a particularly effective training camp.

    the funny part about this scene is that at the time this was pretty realistic. over the top but realistic. the soviet tried applying science to everything much faster than americans. a boxer like Rocky is still common to find today although the majority of professionals now use all kinds of computer technology to give them an edge during training.

  • @lkrnpk

    @lkrnpk

    but it would be more realistic in early 70s, and more about proper training regime/diet/discipline than actual science... I recall one of the closest real events to this was Canada hockey team of NHL pros first meeting ''amateur'' USSR players and losing the first game badly. It was called Summit Series 72... Canadians were drinking and smoking cigars in their free time and having fun (pretty much treating first game like Apollo fight vs Drago) while Soviets had proper diet and training camp most of the year and proper coaching. At the end Canada won the series with 4 wins vs 3 Soviet ones, but it was very close and they were actually behind the Soviets and pretty much only at the end, like here, outclassed the opposition

A lot of this was because the Soviet leaders wanted to dominate sports and so they tried to use any research they could to make them better. They succeeded in a lot of ways and failed in others. All in all they made a lot of contribution to modern day physical training science.

    True but I see Clubber Lang as Rocky’s opposite instead of just the villain. He was hungry and eager to prove himself against the best, doing whatever he needed to do to get the fight Rocky’s management was trying to avoid. When Clubber wins, he gives Rocky a rematch right away. Rocky wins after rediscovering himself and proving to himself he was a real champion. This movie was about Rocky dealing with himself more than Rocky dealing with Lang.

    In the final overhead strict press drago does with the barbell he’s lifting between 405-440lbs which for the time frame he was training in the Rocky universe would’ve made that a world record press & he’s competing in that category with men MUCH HEAVIER than himself. No he wasn’t even close to 261 like stated in the movie. That’s a good perspective on how strong Drago is supposed to be, lifting 20-30lbs more than the world record when he’s 100-150lbs lighter, when not even weight training strictly and being sub 9% body fat. So basically superhuman, even for being on gear. Strict pressing 4.5 plates overhead is absolutely elite even for today’s standards.

    @@Sikorsky1111 Certainly. The most impressive part is the strictness of it, most strong men use some leg drive or bending of their backs to leverage the weight. But the way it's shown in the movie is downright superhuman. For someone of his weight, at his bodyfat to hoist up 4.5 plates with pure arm and delt power, well yes, someone THAT strong could probably punch at 2000psi.

    Few people in the West know, but I.V. Drago is an officer of the USSR Armed Forces, and their success in sports gave career growth and various bonuses. And if there are no successes, you, comrade lieutenant, will go to clear the snow at the Chukotka airfield, or check the collars of the soldiers in Novaya Zemlya, and not to the Soviet Western Group of Forces in Germany. And this motivation is stronger than any sports cups(who heard about Chukotka will understand). 😁
