The way I see it, I think that Park Bo Young, the girl in the video, was in love with a man many years older than her. The man is dead, but she doesn't accept that fact and ends up in a mental hospital because of a mental breakdown. We see IU in all black, and I think this represents a part of the girl in the video. IU represents the part of the girl that knows the man is dead, but because Bo Young can't accept that fact, she locked that part of herself, IU, away. Bo Young still misses her lover, as she constantly hallucinates that he's here when he's not. I think the man did not love her back and her love was unrequited. That's why they mention in the song that all he could say was sorry. I think that Bo Young is ready to lock her whole self away mentally, and that's why we vaguely see her at the water side, as if she was going to commit suicide. However, the man who is already dead is seen in that place, that may be the "after life", and it's as if he's telling her that it's not time for her to leave her life yet, and that's why he grabs her arm and she wakes up on the floor, sprawled out. I feel that dream triggered her memories and that's why she begins crying when she wakes up: the fact that he's gone has sunk in. ^Just my opinion xD

이거 뮤비 처음 나왔을 때 이해안됐는데 한 10년 지나고 나서 보니까 어느정도 이해가 되네. 뮤비와 다른 말이지만 많은 사람들이 좋은날이나 너랑나, 밤편지 같은 곡이 지금의 아이유를 만들어줬다고 하는데 난 이 곡 같음. 후속곡으로 동요를 불러도 1위할 수 있다는 우스갯 소리가 나왔을 정도로 대스타가 되었는데 이 노래를 가지고 나와서 이미지가 굳어지고 빨리 소비되는 걸 막았음. 마이너 발라드로 데뷔한 후 경쾌한 곡으로 인지도를 쌓고 다시 마이너한 발라드로 되돌아 가서 자기 정체성을 확장함.

진짜 잔소리, 좋은날 등 고음이나 밝은 이미지 등으로 확 떴는데 바로 다음 곡으로 이런 어두운 발라드를 냈다는게 놀라움 보통 안전하게 잘된 컨셉 밀고 나가기 마련인데 도전과도 같았던 나몰이를 통해서 아이유의 음악적 스펙트럼을 확인시켜 준듯 소속사에도 감사..ㅎㅎ

For those who don't understand this story: so the girl fell in love with the man who was much older than her and that man died. The girl was really sad and people thought the man who died was his dad but she kept saying that was his boyfriend. People thought she had mental problem and that's why she was in a hospital(asylum?) or something. At the beginning and the end the people at the mental hospital was asking the girl questions to see if she was able to get out. (the "X" s means she can't(cause she kept saying that was her lover but they didn't believe her)) Sorry if there are wrong info cause that's all i know and sorry for bad english

This is a great song!!! As far as I understand it, this girl fell in love with someone about the age of her dad, and that person died from saving her (the scene that he grabbed her from walking to the sea). She experienced mentally breakdown and went to mental hospital, forgot everything. Even though everyone thinks that person is her dad, she knows that he's not. Then she keeps imagining this guy come over and visit her, but the "visiting record book" shows that nobody has ever came over for her. The only thing that she doesn't know is that her lover is died. Since the guy is about her father's age, they probably were harshly criticized by society, and that might be the reason she intended to commit suicide (just a personal guess). So IU is her imaginary "older self" (because an older her can be with her lover without being criticized by people), and that's why she said at the beginning "my body doesn't feel like my body". Hope this can help ;P

I always tear up while watching this. The song is so sad and IU's voice plus emotions run deep - just tugging at your heartstrings. Then you have Park Bo Young who is an amazing actress. I got more goosebumps towards the end when she was sprawled on the floor, helpless, and crying.

여러가지 해석이 있지만 개인적으로 윤상과 박보영은 오래전에 헤어진 연인이지만 긴 세월이 흘렀음에도 박보영은 이별을 부정한채로 그 시간에 머물러서 살고 있고, 윤상은 정상적으로 나이가 들었는 모습을 묘사한것이라고 생각됩니다. 이별 후에는 많은 사람들이 재회에 대한 희망을 갖게 되는데 그 희망은 어쩌면 현실과는 동떨어진 환상이라는 것을 극단적인 배경과 시간의 흐름에서 보여주고 있는것이 아닌가 싶습니다.

5:00 He will come back. Everyone thinks he is my dad.. but he is not my dad. Beautifully written by one of the best composers, Yoon Sang and he himself made appearance in the MV. Love affair between Yoon Sang and Park Bo Yong doesn't appear too weird. It's gotta be the most romatic and beautiful thing or the most cruel thing. In reality, there are some challenges a couple like that would have to overcome.

IU. Although I haven’t been with you as long as I could have, I don’t need to talk about how much you’ve changed my life. My introduction to you came from one song I happened to hear years ago, and only returned to every now and again. However, over the past few years, I took the time to actually pursue you and learn more about you. I still haven’t learned as much as I could have, but you’ve already opened my eyes to music so much. I know that a term that is used to describe your presence in music is “The Girl Next Door.” For a bit of time, I couldn’t quite understand this, and then I realized that the meaning of this isn’t in the literal term, but the feelings that are implied from it. I couldn’t quite understand why when I listened to your voice, I felt this closeness to you that I couldn’t define. Then I realized, it is because your voice represents all of the comforts and joys of one’s life. You encompass so much familiarity and nostalgia in a single note that you sing, and I’ve never heard anybody sing like this before. It is a combination of your voice that is as delicate as a lullaby, and the sincerity of the words that you sing. Anybody who hears your voice first the first time might be so overwhelmed by its individuality that they might not even be able to explain what’s happening to them at first. They could just be experiencing your voice for the first time, and it can instantly take them back to some of the happiest moments of their life. Only you can evoke these strong emotions in other people when you sing. When I hear your voice, I don’t know whether I should submit to the feelings I’ve been afraid to confront, or parade around with confidence and optimism. I don’t know how you can capture so much in just your voice, but what you have is honestly a quality that only you were born with. The first time I heard and saw this music video, I'm not really into kpop but I know who IU was.. Until finally i'm really into kpop and Korean song, I can't never forgetting the moment I was really sad when IU was crying, and finally I know the title of this song and always fall in love with it
