I’m 5’10 and 130, Japanese. I’ve been working in fashion all my life and there was something interesting an old French lady once told me. The idea of the runway was to show clothing pieces for prince and princess back in the 1800s. They would have models who were built like the 15 years old ish kids to best tailor the clothes for balls. The fashion industry itself was simply just not ready/made for modern 1st world countries and their lifestyles. I don’t have any opinions on this but I thought it was very interesting.

another interesting thing about the fashion industry for women is how a lot of clothes actually don’t take boobs into account. a lot of the high-fashion trends are completely inaccessible to me because they offer no support or bra coverage in that area. you’d think that the designer would leave more room but i actually struggle to find clothes that aren’t uncomfortably tight around my chest region. it’s like every aspect of fashion is made to make us feel like there is something wrong with us

Yeah, I hate this. Considering the western beauty standard outside of fashion tends to include a bigger chest, I think this one is down to laziness of the designers. It's easier to accommodate or even support a flatter chest because there is barely anything to accomodate. Luckily for me, I have a narrow ribcage so I struggle a bit less to find fitting non-stretch tops because my narrow ribcage balances out my bigger chest in terms of bust measurement. The down side is that I struggle even more finding a bra that fits because bras in my size barely even exist, let alone cute ones that don't cost a fortune 🥲

Omg I’ve always had this problem, as a women I read this comments and relate; the tight armpits, the tight uncomfortable shoulders in a size S and when I size up the waist leaves a weird awkward gap or the piece loses its shape and looks like a potato sack. It’s a tricky thing to have a masculine frame and try feminine clothing, it always made me feel like a freak or less of a woman. I thought men were lucky that their clothes fit and design were made for their broad shoulders and wide Ribcages since that’s quite literally the average male frame, but not even guys escape the thin frame ideal of the industry.

For me, ive found that work-wear is unironically the best stuff to look for in regard to both fit and functionality. Duluth long line tees, carhartt cargos, and hiking boots. A lot of the work wear brands, make clothes for men with average or large bodies. Its still hard to find stuff for when im of work tho. The way fashion is centered around skinny people is insane. I was a bit overweight a like 2 years back (1,78m and around 93Kg) and therefore wore a lot of oversized stuff. I felt fairly good in that stuff and had fun with it but the moment I lost about 20Kg and got a lot skinnier the options I had just EXPLODED and I saw that (aside from me now needing belts for nearly all old pants) my old clothes just suddenly worked a lot better because even the XL oversized tees I have were basically cut for very tall skinny people.

Before the 80s if you couldn't find clothes off the rack getting it made to measure wasn't much more expensive, so that gap would be filled out. That changed rapidly post fast-fashion, and people that aren't just skinny and tall, needed clothes too-there's now a large market of people who had now instead turned to cheap poor quality clothing, itching for something better. Let's not delude ourselves to thinking that diverse bodies are represented equally in fashion because there's a handful of curvy models walking the runway-ofc it's better than it used to be, not acknowledging that is just plain damaging.

I share a similar feeling ^. I've always been skinny and clothes just seem to hang off me. I can't find anything that fits me without dwarfing my arms, sagging around my waist, or buckling around my knees. That isn't to say there isn't stuff made for my measurements, that's true, but that doesn't mean that fashion trends overall adopt skinnyness. I've never felt like my body represents anything close to what fashion idealises. I feel like the skinny guys in high fashion aren't there because of beauty standards, but because they represent something far from normal, so that they (and by extension the clothes) don't just look "ordinary" on the catwalk. Relative to prevalence in the general population, athletic, more bulky, skinny-fat, or plus-sized shapes are all pretty standard, even if our perceptions of these body shapes aren't as equally balanced. Perhaps my perception of these models is shaped by my ideals of being athletic, but it's hard to imagine anyone wanting to be BMI

As a skinny guy that has always been envious of muscular and lean guys for being able to fill up their clothes, this video really widened my point of view. I'm 183cm and 62 kg so I'm borderline underweight. Most clothes should "fit me" but I have a birth defect called pectus excavatum that gives me a sunken chest and pot belly. I always felt that most clothes that are slim or fitting never work for me. But then baggy or wide fits can sometimes drown me out. Maybe like you said, loving this body will be the first step.

  • @branislavcunta7763

    @branislavcunta7763

I'm also 183cm and weight 61-63kg with pectus excavatum. What a coincidence. I was quite unlucky since I grew up in a rural area where "filling up your clothes" was always a standard. I was always told that "you should be glad that you can anything you want" and "you look weak, you should eat more". The messaging I got from it was "you are lucky, yet you do nothing with that luck which makes you massive loser". Combine that with the defect and you have perfect recipe for insecurity. The clothes situation improved for me only relatively recently when slim fit was in. But still, I fared much better in a big city when it comes to self-confidence. I guess I need to move out lol.

Trying on a CCP leather jacket and realizing it will never fit me because of my wide shoulders and short height really pushed me to learn how to make clothes and, ultimately years later, created my own brand. High fashion is all about exclusivity- it is extremely expensive, extremely size selective, etc. There are other clothing brands with inclusive sizing, and their clothes look good. Why? How? Because they put in the money! To research how to make clothes for bigger, smaller, shorter people, etc. They put in the money to create new patterns, to create new cuts. Making clothes is not impossible- high fashion houses just refuse to do this, even if they will very likely expand their customer base if they had more inclusive sizing. It is so dumb.

That’s going to be the source of your insecurity. Be open to styles that DO look good for you and just gotta be honest with yourself. But don't forget that skinny people may not also fit in some clothes due to looking odd which is a upside . At the end I would choose to wear what I want by working my way around but there is so much weight you can loose until your shoulders or thighs become an issue. As a boy , I do however fit into most basic clothes

Your body ideals should be healthy and not something that cause dysmorphia. Dress up for your body and how feel confident and comfortable. Is always ok and allowed to try new things and if you try it on, don’t like how it looks on you, is fine… there is many more options. You don’t need to look like everyone else.

I have been saying this for I don't know how long.. but working out and creating a slim athletic body will become YOUR fashion statement; and then you slap something on top of it. It's your body, not your clothes. Slim athletic bodies can go topless and still look fashionable. While a dad bod(currently me) has to work so hard to look like a decent human being; so many colors, patterns and styles I have to play around with, while the hot athletic slim body can just slap on anything and look good. So yes, your body comes first then it's whatever you slap on top of it.

Thank goodness I’m a 10.5 and nothing more, because otherwise I know it could get crazy looking for even basic shoes. As a 32, even, it’s insane to try and find certain pants (shoes) too or other pieces, especially Japanese because 70-80% of the pairs you’ll find will be 27-29. Bet you these models get paid good, travel around the world, wear whatever, sponsored by their companies, etc. While most of us with other body types have to work harder and get less opportunities in life in any field. I haven't seen many chubby CEOs, Actors, etc. Always have been kinda friendless, looked at as a slob or a creep which caused me to become a shy anti-social introverted freak or social outcast who can't fit in. So not only can we not dress well, we're perceived negatively now, everything is our fault, nobody likes us, nobody supports us, we're just left in the dust while everyone else keeps running or "walking the runway" forward ig. I don't wanna make it sound like I'm a victim but I'd love to be treated like a human being.

Its why actors are usually good looking, its why CEOs are usually tall, its why models are really skinny. The majority of successful people in professions tend to look good. There's a few places where looks may not matter, such as truck driving, mechanics, plumbing, etc. But yes, I genuinely believe due to my physical limitations, I am unable to reach CEO status. As an avid gym goer with a built upper body, 29 inch waist and thicc legs I may look very good with my clothes off but most of fashion is unfortunately just not made for my body type. The baggy pants and boxy top trend is a godsend for me but all stuff that fits closer to the body doesn't work at all

i feel like the "it's your body" also manifests in fashion in a way that form-fitting, short, cropped and cut-out stuff in considered the most stylish. especially in feminine outfits, people generally prefer the ones that show your legs/shoulders/waist. notice, if you look for cool outfit ideas on the Internet, you really rarely stumble on more covered up, "modest" looks. personally i'm always cold & uncomfortable, and i prefer to stay covered up at all times, but that makes me look worse and less stylish than most people around. idk what to do about that yet 🤷‍♀️

The cool thing about different body types is, if you can't pull off something because of your body, chances are that the person that could pull that off can't pull off what you're currently wearing. Despite the fasion industry's obvious bias, I believe our differences make us stronger. If you're having trouble finding fits that work for you, keep experimenting and don't give up!

I’ve found surprising success with YSL items as someone who wouldn’t be as traditionally ideal for it. (For reference 5’11-6ft not entirely sure which and 175-180) I know I’m not super crazy size wise but from what I’ve found getting your body fat percentage down seems to help. My shoulders and quads are still sometimes something that clashes tho. I’d say look around and you might find some pieces that work for you but yeah definitely certain designers are a lot harder to find good fitting clothes in.

Love the video, good insight for people not in the industry, im a designer and i think some advice i would give to people is not only find brands that fit your body type but also learn some basic altercations if you’re really into fashion i feel like it’s something you should know, once i finished design school it was pretty cool because i can pretty much buy anything i want and make it fit to my body, weather it be a vetements pant or a size 46 dickies from the thrift (im a size 34 just for reference lol). Also you dont need a machine, some basic hand stitches you should know are the running stitch, back stitch, ladder stitch and for hemming the rolled stitch or a catch stitch

I love this breakdown, as I am in the same position you were in. Very broad shoulders about the 240lbs mark, big chest and bit of a gut. I am getting married and thought I might treat myself to a high end suit and no suits in my budget were anywhere near my size, and just ended up going with a Uk tailoring company instead, which saved a bit of money. They measured me up made alterations etc. for a fraction of the price. I do see both sides of the argument about models being 'skinny'. The clothes are made to be the showpiece and spectacle on the runway, and if the models have any outstanding feature (huge arms, chest, thighs or backside) it will draw attention away from the clothing. I rarely see a runway model and think they have amazing looks, I actually find myself struggling to remember what they look like after the next model has walked and as much as they are celebrated I think their job is to be unremarkable. (I dunno)

Thank you for this video. I’ve slowly realised this over the past few years but I thought it was just me and my weird body. Even as a 5’2 woman who wears a smaller size than average it’s really a gamble when buying any clothes, especially pants, because there’s no guarantee they will fit on the body well. Usually the sizes (even the smaller ones like XS) are made for absolute giants and I end up having to turn up my pants so they don’t drag on the floor and get dirty, but then it ruins the original shape of them. I don’t consider myself as having wide hips, they’re quite moderate, but I’m also not streamlined like a model, so the ass on pants (jeans especially) can be way too tight yet brands that cater to “curvy” bodies are far too big so it looks like I’m wearing a diaper. Sure, I can return stuff and get my money back but I can’t just buy 1 item, I have to make a whole day of it and specifically scour multiple brands to check if they’re affordable and carry exactly what I want. Like cmon I just want pants.

Beware that the standards in the model/fashion industry regarding weight are far from the western societal beauty standards. Especially as a guy, being skinnier is seen as far less attractive than being on the fatter side. You don't even have to be underweight by BMI standards to be judged as too skinny by society. When it comes to the other side, being above the BMI threshold is still being seen as normal and good weight as a guy despite being overweight in actuality. That's definitely something to consider when deciding to adapt your body to the standards set by the fashion industry because it might negatively affect your perception by society and potential dating partners.

I also have a broader frame. I've been running into the same issues surrounding clothes. Instead of critiquing myself, I choose to have a more balanced relationship with fashion. I think I'm very healthy and looking to accept my body as is and as it changes. Fashion is unfortunately toxic, and while I love it I don't want it to determine how I feel about my body. Dysmorphia is a real issue for men, so please seek help before decision on your well-being for some fabric. Also, I've started buying clothes oversized and getting them tailored down to fit how I want. I have some unique cuts from doing this. This is an especially affordable option if you're thrifting :)

Sewing machines are an essential household tool. When I finally caved and bought a cheap one, and learned to do some minor alterations, I felt so liberated. I could buy anything in a size up, break it down, and make little tweaks to the fabric to make it fit my size and shape perfectly. Way easier than making new garments from scratch and way cheaper than a tailor. I've since started making my own patterns and bespoke clothes for myself as a craft, which has been so fun and enriching, and it all started there. I know other people here have discussed the process of making your own clothes for the first time, but if you can start by deconstructing or replicating what you already have, you will start to understand fabric behavior and sewing techniques so much more and have a leg up when you want to design your own. Find that one piece that does fit you perfectly and learn to make it yourself.

Played football for 4 years. Got into bodybuilding. Annnddddd then I come across fashion. I was even part of this fashion program, and they had me modeling (everyone was able to participate) and with me being 5’9 202 lbs. It was a complete disaster 😂. I mean you can look at my page and see how I was built. None of the clothes fit me, and I looked like a literal sore thumb. All the models were extremely slim. And I’m looking like I’m ready for the damn Arnold classic😂 My waist is a 30-32 (I’m not even sure because I haven’t wore jeans in over 3 years) but my thighs were the size of a man who is like 230lbs. I’m still on my journey of cutting ( even losing a little muscle mass intentionally, especially around the inner thigh) it’s just wild that this popped up on my recommended, and I didn’t search anything like this. I think YT is reading my mind 👀 But I’ve chosen that fashion path simply because my love for it outweighs being some big musclesaurus Rex

I've actually found myself in a similar circumstance in regards to the muscle mass or fashion dichotomy. I've always had an athletic frame with broad shoulders and chest but I enjoyed endurance sports growing up (Cross Country, Tennis, Soccer etc.), and maintained around 10% body fat with lower muscle mass at all times. I never really had to think about clothing cuts/"fits"-- I would just buy a medium and it always "worked." I put on a bit of excess fat in my late 20s during the slim-fit fad and everything looked like shite on me. It hit my confidence pretty bad and woke me up to the concept of clothing "fits." I am almost down to 10% body fat again. However, this last year due to a knee injury I've had to lower my cardio and have increased weight training. Without really trying my delts, chest and biceps have gotten much bigger. I actually don't like it at all. Its impossible to find anything that fits anymore. I hate tight short sleeves, I don't like shirts that hug the chest and stomach. Everything is either too tight and too short, or its too baggy, ill-fitting and frumpy looking. I think I want to lose the muscle mass. I'm sick of having to "worry" much less think about "fit" all the time and how it never seems to work. And I don't even care very much about fashion.

Honestly one thing thats relly helped me gain a healthier perspective on body size was working in China. In the UK I'm a size M (6'1" , 180lb ) but in China I'm at least a 2XL. At first I was like "nooo..." but over time I just lerned that... this stuff is all kind of relative and maybe I was spending far too much time and emotional labour on making sure the scales read a certain weight and that I didn't go over a certain clothes size and that sometimes I was refusing to buy a size up out of some weird social conditioning. Anyway, after a few months of accepting my new size was either XXL or XXXL depending how lose I wanted the cut, I stopped looking at size labels and started looking at how the pieces actually sat on my body and I'm happier than ever with my wardrobe. But yeah, it sucks that even as a tall, slim, gym toned guy, my 32" waist makes me "too fat" for high fashion.

Life’s way too short for that.

I’m a woman but I got into Kibbe body types for the exact reasons you’ve mentioned. My body is not built like todays conventional beauty standard, and even though I love fashion, I’ve always struggled with finding things that fit. (I also used to be bigger.) Learning about your best silhouette-and it may be extremely specific-is the key to developing a good personal style. I won’t lie, I still rly rly envy people who don’t seem to have to worry about this at all…but it is what it is! Alli Vera is another youtuber who touches on finding silhouettes for her specific body. I find this philosophy overall very helpful. Kibbe is a shorthand to learning about this stuff, and even though it can be extremely confusing, it has overall helped me in body acceptance and gravitating towards clothes that fit my body, not fight my body.

I did do the weight loss thing before giving up on fashion but that backfired so badly and I’m now fatter than I was when I started. Long term calorie deficit did not work for me because of the massive backlash I faced from my body afterward - I was insatiable for months. It’s tough but it was a lesson. Now I just appreciate fashion on other people - my own clothes are boring at best hehe.

Just a word of advice, maybe not needed if you already know, but you might've gone too hard on the calorie deficit. Sure it'll take much longer with a smaller deficit, but you'd feel not nearly as insatiable and it is much more sustainable long term. Say for example your maintenance calories was around 2800 (the amount to neither gain or lose weight); try eating 2600, ensuring enough fiber which can keep you satiated, or do a fast for the start of the day and eat later in the day. A deficit is a deficit in the end of the day, you are not eating enough to gain weight, so it doesnt matter how much that deficit is (unless you have goal weight by a certain time, like some athletes do). So no need to push yourself long term on say a massive deficit, like in this example going to 1900 or something crazy.

This video hit home, I'm also a chunky boi (6'1, around 100kg, 36-38 waist and only feel comfortable with XXL, gym goer but with more of a powerlifter body composition than a body building one). This has put me off from fashion for years and i'd just wear whatever, until recently when i stopped caring about clothe sizes (i would feel bad for buying XXL, so i would go for a L or XL and then not using the piece because obviously it wouldn't fit as desired and i'd always be self conscious about my belly). I'm now on a journey of trying to accept my body and finding clothes that actually fit me and that are flattering to my body type. This has led to just accept that I won't ever have a YSL silhouette (a style that I really like), but as you said, that's the sad reality of things. It's hard because I don't really love baggy clothes but sometimes they just fit and feel better. I also stopped caring about fashion trends, and I'm more focused on finding long lasting high quality pieces that are versatile and that i can mix and match with other things. But of course those types of clothing pieces are more expensive and that limits my options. It's hard out here for us, so thank your shedding light on this issue.
