Incredibly lucky that didn't occur on the journey home - timely maintenance. I think the diagnosis on the drum shoe is spot on - though as I am months behind, you already know this or not... 😂 Great content as always, Marc. The old bus is still a beast. Good to see Matt back on the channel, you've a great friend/channel dynamic.

Thanks Darren yes we were very lucky with this one. Glad your enjoying the content. Don’t worry things are slowing up so should give you time to catch up 👍
The relief I felt seeing that the engine wasn't destroyed was nothing to how you must have felt. At least it's all simple fixes and you know why they occured which really helps.

@@graemew7001 aha thanks yeah it’s a right pain in that sense but I guess I am just getting to know her a little sooner than I wanted
I restored a T2 and yeah, the “easy-to-fix” engine was made as such for a reason. I love the look, it’s a hoot to drive, buuut… I’m done with air-cooled, carburated engines. Thankfully doing a FI AP engine swap is fairly easy. I’m doing that for my current 1975 Puma GTE project.

Oh what about the VW guy somewhere near Birmingham UK ? Only sells New/Used parts he has been on Wheeler Dealers & other Shows, he can surely help you 😁😁
I know the engine was worrying but I did laugh when that shoe fell straight out !!

As soon as I heard the engine, I knew it was a valve issue, lol. I worked for a Vw shop for a few years it crazy the amount of knowledge you retain

Yes it definitely sounded like that. Hopefully I can get it all back together soon. The issues keep coming with the bus right now so stay tuned.

Gene Berg makes a valve cover spacer kit that allows High ratio rockers with stock valve cover
Vw schofields sell top quality stuff that's not over priced. Vw heritage are too expensive by 30%, give them a wide birth. Also try custom and commercial, they make a lot in house and are cheaper on some items.

First your points are dirty, second those are steering caps, Third your oil gaskets are worn.
don't replace the wheel bearing unless it is ropey . thease old buses were made with play in them from new

Haha and so it begins. So far Ive used just kampers and AH schofield. Ive found both to be pretty good

Thanks buddy yes just kampers have been so helpful. Stay tuned parts have arrived.
It seems so obvious that stud not being captive to the rocker shaft ! But it’s not 😅 soon as I saw a snapped stud my brain went straight to doom 😂 images of trying to remove it clouded any mechanical sense
I think one valve had been adjusted too tight, put load on the stud, it finally gave up, loosening the rocker shaft and making the valve adjustment really loose and very noisy. Nice that it waited to give you some content before failing. I’m guessing as you said the handbrake locked on through lack of use and was ripped off when trying to free it. Give us some more symptoms of the starter issue… is it clicking… getting power. Much enjoyed… I thought I was the only one jinxed with new(to me) car issues.
@SimpsonsClassics
Жыл бұрын
Yes I think your right with the stud. New parts have arrived now so hopefully we can sort it out. The starter issue is odd it’s like the battery isn’t charging but the starter doesn’t always engage. Obviously not had chance to look at that as the engine is in bits currently. I will keep you all posted.
That stud must have been overtightened. If replacements are not readily available, it doesn't look like a difficult job to make them for anyone with a lathe and turning experience. Perhaps a tougher grade of steel to prevent recurrence of the problem although, to be honest, it shouldn't need a lot of torque.
@SimpsonsClassics
Жыл бұрын
Yes that’s what we think also. I have the new correct fitting kit now. So hopefully we can get it all built back up and running soon.
@rennkafer13
Жыл бұрын
Overtightened was my first thought as well. The EMPI covers are known leakers, and the usual solution for most people is "it must not be tight enough" leading to overtightening and broken parts. From what I can see there the engine builder did it right correcting the rocker geometry when assembling the engine (or at least made an effort at it) so I don't think that's the problem. If it were me, I'd probably be making sure you weren't near coil bind on the valve spring at full lift, and that you have some room to the piston as well, as either of those could also cause that failure.
Wow😮
