ITIHASA is not MYTHOLOGY / Discussion with Amish Tripathi

अब हिंदी बोल के साथ ! bit.ly/AmishTripathiHindi
Amish explains that being “cool” is the youths’ primary interest. He writes books that show traditional Indian heroes being cool. Rajiv raises a serious issue that Amish translates Itihasa as Mythology. This generates a healthy discussion with an important outcome. Rajiv introduces his pioneering new project on Sanskrit Non-Translatables, and advocates leaving Itihasa un-translated in Amish’s books. It is to Amish’s credit that during the show itself he is willing to consider changing his approach in his works. With Amish’s help, Rajiv wants certain Sanskrit-Non-Translatable words to become the new “cool”.

I am a taxi driver and I greatly admire the work you are doing. I have been growing up with tainted and false views about vedic culture, mythology and dharma. These propagandas are often apparent in media and even school books. However, the silver lining is that even if they present 10 people who create a negative image about ancient India, vedic culture and dharma, which can make an Indian feel inferior or embarrassed. An Indian will only end up accepting the truth told by one person like you in your video. That's because it brushes aside the negative self image and instills a greater sense of self esteem and pride in that person. We still need to have a school of thought, an institution. Don't worry sir, ur videos will be forever. I keep recommending your channel to all my passengers and play your videos while driving people. Maybe u must target more such taxi drivers.

Chaitanya Tuckley; Hinduism is based on mythical stories; Ram and Krishna claimed as Avatars of Vishnu for the last 5000 yrs without an iota of evidence presented. Mahabharatha claimed to be written by Ganesh, a Murda. Ramayana where Ram flies off on a bird, and Hanuman, a flying monkey without wings carrying a parvat. Shiva is claimed to have a nonexistent multiheaded cobra around his neck. The historicity of Jesus Christ is well researched and established based on ample evidence by non-Christian historians in the very first century. Similarly, it is documented that Prophet Mohammad lived in the late sixth century in Saudi Arabia. Sadly, there no evidence when Maharaj Dashrath ruled Atodhya followed by Ramraj.

@@Adharshsumansuman; Only an ignorant bigoted Hindu would give such an absurd explanation without any evidence. Christianity rests on the resurrection of Jesus Christ as the tomb was found empty and He appeared in person to His mother Mary, His eleven disciples and to the crowds of people consisting of the Jews who had accused Him of blasphemy and the Romans who carried out the crucifixion. Romans accepted Christianity in the 5th century. You would find youtube the book 'The Case for Christ by Lee Strobel, an atheist Jewish Law graduate from Yale informative. Satyemeva Jayete.

Devdutt has his own meaning and explanation behind using the term Mythology. And he is right, everyone has a right to their own views. BUT he also defends vedic culture fiercely when it is needed and when unsuspecting liberals try to cajole him into giving a denegrating statement on Hindu culture as a whole. You should watch his lectures. I support both Rajiv and Devdutt. Both have their own reasoning. What we really need is a debate between devdutt and rajiv and then come to a conclusion as to what is the correct term.

Pardon me for intercepting. Nalanda was a great university. I remember reading in a book published for children by National Book Trust that there were 10,000 teachers at Nalanda during its heydays. Surely, these teachers might have been of various status and denominations much like Bhattas, Bhattacharyas, Upadhyayas, Mahopadhyayas, Acharyas, Vedis, Dvivedis, Trivedis, Chaturvedis, Mukhyopadhyayas, Kulapatis, etc. With so many teachers, the no. of subjects taught would have been at least a thousand, given that there were ten teachers for one subject. The teachers in each subject belonged to different sects or schools such as Gautama, Maanava, Kaashyapa, etc. Our tradition (which was in vogue till 40 years ago) gave freedom to the teacher to teach in whichever way he chose to, the only thing that mattered was that the student learned it. Moreover, there was no fixed duration for a course in our tradition. It depended on the capability and need of the student and the willingness of the teacher to teach to the extent of satisfaction of both the teacher and the student. Some students were teachers and some teachers were students at the same time. Some studied till their hair turned grey.

There were no great scientific knowledge hidden in those that we lost. Otherwise how come it was just contained in books. Why did we not create a society using that scientific knowledge? West is dominating (everything that you do in your whole day is given by west, including the system that governs you and clothes that you were) because they went away from Religion and towards science and reason. there are buffoons in west as well who claim superiority of Christianity but Christianity only hindered progress. Read history of Renaissa if you want progress of our country.

Kunal Kanti Ganguly ~ You miss the point Rajiv ji was making. The whole idea of Samskrit(am)-Non translatables is to use the Samskrit(am) words exactly how they are; what they are without translating / transliterating them, so we could, gradually, " Samskritize ourselves ", be exactly who we are and get away from becoming one of 'them'. Everyone who is still confused must watch this video of Rajiv I am linking below. And then watch it again, go teach your family folks, friends, children & everyone what it is all about. Make it a practice in your daily vocabulary. It may not be all that 'cool' in the beginning, but once you get in to that habit; once you re-frame your mind to it, then it becomes part of your nature. Ultimately it indeed becomes cool naturally & effortlessly. kzread.info/dash/bejne/g36Ius2vh5nRm8Y.html

Yesterday I was watching videos of sakshi apologist and they were talking about some shlokes from Upnishads and purans those were contradicting each other that was kind of shocking for me and also kind of hard to digest, when I checked they were not interpreting them wrong but the context in which they were placing them was. so as a mere admirer of you great knowledge and work I request if you could clear these doubts either by yourself or by consulting someone related to these matters, as these are really affecting young minds . In the debates on what is Hindutva in the 1990s, I argued that it was impossible for Hinduism to be "fundamentalist", let alone fascist. Not only is Hinduism not based around any centralised authority -- ideological or temporal -- the very ethos of Sanatan Dharma is the scientific (i.e., testable, contestible, debatable) search for Natural Law -- physical and metaphysical. Accordingly, Hinduism has historically been tolerate of EVERY human activity -- perhaps sometimes to an comfortable degree, with even thieves and prostitutes having their own gods and rituals of worship! The prohibitions against intermarriage -- looked down upon in the liberal West -- is actually a way that groups have maintained their identity and diversity, even the smallest and most marginal of groups. It is the way that Indian society integrates all these groups and retains its order. So Farsis escaping Islamic persecution in Persia now only survive in India, after over 1000 years of being in India, without being lost or swamped. The same with Jews, Christians, Jains, Sikhs, etc. Even the Dalai Lama exiled himself in India. And of course there is the prized and complementary role of the feminine, which is valued in almost the exact opposite way that it is despised in the modern West -- ironically by Feminism itself, which is the greatest enemy of femininity and of motherhood -- authentic, irreplaceable sources of true feminine power! Anyhow, great discussion. I love your work.

This collaboration-to-come reminds me of none other than Kalidasa whose works were the then pop culture equivalents when Sanskrit was lingua franca and was utilized by him to popularize further our Ithihaasa-Puranas in the forms then prevalent among common folk like drama and poetry. Let this be the cornerstone of Bharatiya renaissance and everyone be enlightened about our vastly rich cultural heritage. Thejasvinavadheethamasthu.

Itihaasa. The word is ITI-HA-AASA ..THIS INDEED WAS THE FACTUAL SITUATION Today ITIHAASA means HIS STORY or HER STORY. PURAANA is an way of keeping the facts in the mind of later generations as a story which is interesting and easily remembered. Like say ASTAAVAKRA ..the word means asta-avakra i.e the eights (energy centers ) in a straight line . But the word means in common He Found A Weird String In His Father's Attic. When He Pulled It, Everything Changed Upbeat News as a personwith eight bends in the body.

Great initiative! So happy for your efforts in bringing the Sanskrit non translate-ble terms to the world. We desperately need it. Most misunderstood term is the 'dharma'. These small moves will bring great changes. Waiting eagerly for that. Really proud of my heritage.

Koti Pranaam for the " Deeksha " & " Vidhyabhyas " you have given to dhimmies like myself who didn't know any better.

Such an insightful discussion :) Thank you Rajiv sir and Amish :) I have been facing this conundrum too. There is no literal translation of our Puranas and Itihaas and as a book reviewer too, I am forced to use the term mythology or mythological fiction for our stories of gods and goddesses. It sounds incorrect and half-hearted as if we are not giving something its due wightage in popular culture.

As a European investigator I am convinced that the Indian history is very old and important for the whole world. I can not read the old scriptures but I found information about the Mahabharata. Like other ancient books, the Mahabharata tells us about a cycle of seven world eras that are separated by a natural disaster. This ia also mentioned in the Popol Vuh, the ancient book of the Maya from central America. These cycle of disasters causes a cycle of five civilizations. Four of them are living for only a few thousand years, but one of them lives more than 10,000 years, becomes better educated and skilled and more numerous. They lived in the Golden Age. They reached a level that is higher than ours today. They could fly, had beam weapons and internet. They vanished 20,000 years ago because of the next natural disaster. The cause of these disasters is the ninth planet of our solar system. To learn much more about the cycle of civilizations and its timeline, recurring floods and ancient high tech, read the e-book:"Planet 9 = Nibiru" You can read it nicely on any computer, tablet or smartphone. Just search: invisible nibiru 9

Very Right approach suggested and well received by Tripathiji - Our ITIHAAS and its icons should not be presented in the form of a Novel or ancient thriller. Though it makes a glued reading , however , it makes our Gods and Godesses look like mortal characters in a novel. Lets keep them sacrosanct. Rajivjee is right - Now he has the readers base to write books which makes our Gods and Godesses look like they lived on this earth and they led humans. Panditjee , task is tedious but u took it up. All the best JAI HIND 🌈
