#ITALY

Not being able to spend more than 90 out of 180 days in the EU thanks to Brexit and no longer owning a house in the UK, we went travelling for the 3 months between middle of December 2023 and middle of March 2024. This episode is about coming home after the winter and what we'd find: what condition will the garden (450+ drought tolerant plants), land and fruit/olive trees be in, will the water tanks be full of rainwater (fingers crossed!) and how daunting will the weeds be? We also pop around to our friends, Tracey and Ivano, who have been tending to Sally's seedlings over the winter period. They'll be offering accommodation in their trullis by the summer of 2024, Ivano's a chef, they're growing all their own vegetables and he'll also run cookery classes. More info can be found on their website at www.trullideserio.com
Our website has more info about the our project at La Bolla: www.labollapuglia.co.uk. We'd be delighted if you subscribed for the 3-weekly future episodes about renovation of this beautiful original stone lamia, energy and water self-sufficiency, land management of the 4-acre olive and fruit orchard and drought-tolerant gardening. We are also on Instagram at @LaBollaPuglia and love getting your comments and questions.

Probably the longest video I've watched by choice for a loooong time: I love reading and short videos...but this was great. Super interesting. I love how you know the latin name of every single plant in your garden (HOW!!!!). Also, Ivano is fantastic. Please introduce us to more of the locals! Thanks for sharing...happy to support your project! The little plug at the end was the best (after the sneeze attack).

Hi Jacqueline, firstly we're amazed and delighted that you made it to the end and thank you for such positive feedback, we're chuffed you enjoyed it! Sally didn't know about any of the 450+ plants before, and got them based on Olivier Filippi's 'Dry Gardening Handbook' which only uses the Latin names, so that's all she knows - you should see her spreadsheet!!! 🤣🤣 We are going this morning to film some of the locals grafting olive trees, so your point about seeing more like that (although nothing can quite compare to Ivano!) is a good one. Not always possible but we'll certainly try 👍 - thanks for your support 😊

Really enjoyed the video. We are at a similar phase in the garden and at the moment, just keeping the weeds at bay is taking me about 7 hours a week!!! We uncover the pool next week, hopefully before the frogs have mated!!!🐸

Hi Sinead, funnily enough we're making a 1m squared hole in the ground at the end of the land today for a 'frogs only' freshwater pool to help them through the mating period (and keep them away from ours!)...a suggestion from Agnese on Instagram. Let's see if it makes any difference! I'm accepting gradually that weeds can be a blessing as well as a curse - they protect the smaller plants from the cold in winter and from the heat of the sun in summer, so I'm not in so much as a rush as I used to be about pulling them out of the ground. The whole lot (Zone 1, Zone 2 and the inner garden) probably take 3 full weeks whenever we get here after 3 months away and I love uncovering 'proper' plants that have popped up in the meantime but are hidden by the weeds, it's one of the best bits about weeding!! Glad you enjoyed the video and am looking forward to hearing about the situation with the frogs! Sally

Your newly planted garden has been on my mind over the last few months, even considered getting our campervan out and visiting just to water and tend them whilst you were galavanting!! Felt as though I was there with you having the walk through and almost started chipping in with comments and observations! Gosh you both don't hang around getting on with things. Well done. Enjoy xx

Wow! Your gardens look fantastic! And, welcome back! I am arriving back to my place in Ostuni next week, for the first time since last October. Your video has me feeling so inspired and excited to see the countryside full of beautiful wildflowers. I am very pleased to see that your efforts to keep the xylella at bay have worked! I will message you after I arrive and hopefully you all will have some time to meet up…! My husband comes in a few more weeks and I would love for him to meet you. We will begin our landscape project as soon as I arrive (fingers crossed for no major delays!) so hopefully we will have a lovely outdoor space to enjoy soon as well! Dry gardening is still sitting in the forefront of my mind and I am hoping and wondering how we could pull it off🤔. I’m going to catch up on a few of your past videos I missed… hope to see you, and congratulations on your amazing garden and water successes!!
