My mother-in-law is always telling servers in Italian restaurants that she's Italian so she knows what [name a dish] is supposed to taste like... even though her Italian heritage consists of one grandfather who emigrated to the US, married a Greek woman, had one child and died at age 27, so my MiL has never actualy tasted any Italian family recipes. She herself has never been to Italy and speaks no Italian, which doesn't stop her from trying to pronounce the names of certain Italian foods with a (mortifying) "Italian" accent that is nothing close to how they're pronounced in Italy.

Her behavior is not unusual in the New York suburb where she lives (her circle @ church is mostly self-declared "Italians" who have never been to Italy and "Irish" most of whom have never been to Ireland but who celebrate St Patrick's Day as if the Pope asked them personally to drink themselves blind. We are trying to plan a family trip to Italy so my MiL can see it for herself and have bragging rights at church suppers when the menu is "Italian"... but since her health is not great (she walks sloooowly) and since my sister-in-law (her daughter) wants to come but refuses to share a room with her own mother - which makes the trip much more expensive and complicated - we might have to limit the trip to 5 nights in Rome so she can see Vatican City etc and maybe even go to Mass.

Sparklemotion101 a lot of Americans decide to associate with an ethnicity to make themselves “unique”. I don’t think it really matters what your ethnic background, but more what it culture they are raised in.

I've worked at a restaurant in Manhattan and I must say that Ryan and Cecily's characters are SPOT ON. Great job everyone.

“Literally” is no longer a word, it was never necessary in the first place most people use “actually” in its place. “Literally” is dead we do not need it anymore take your time to grieve and make your peace, but “literally” is gone

Cecily Strong can pull off 'dumb girl characters' better than any cast member. She just has a knack for it. On a sidenote, she hasnt appeared in any movies yet!!!! You think about all the previous female cast members like Tina Fey, Amy Poeler, Kirsten Wiig, Kate McKinnon, but somehow Cecily hasnt shown up in movies yet.

I misread it as "Then why am I Buzzfeed?" and was very confused for a full 3 minutes

Ryan and Cecily's character is basically the New Yorkers that would say they've been going to the same deli or pizzeria for the past 20 years when the place only just opened 2 years ago.

You can practically see the bliss on Cecily's face when Ryan was cuddling her towards the end.

I've loved and rewatched this skit so much since it aired, and I quote it all the time. I dropped a "If this wasn't a Terezzano's I'd beat you to death" just last week at a work meeting and about 5 people got the reference!

When Ryan Gosling breaks character and laughs is priceless
