Today in the Dainty Acres training studio we are just walking... My dogs go nuts when I ask them, "You guys want to go for a walk?!" Everyday and sometimes twice a day we go on a walk, and I take the same opportunity with my dogs as I did when I was riding show horses.
Since I need my dog to be light on the lead in the show ring, I also need them light on the lead when we hack outside. I do not want a dog to cut unfront of me or pull me over. That is dangerous, and I don't have time for an ER visit.
I used to light hack my OTTB (Off The Track Thoroughbred) before going into the training ring. My reason was to let him have fun and get his sniffs and snorts out before we walked into the ring. On that hack I would be asking my horse for leg yields, stop, stay and forward transitions. Dogs are no different, and I am not going to get any respect fresh out of the stall or crate, as they are just too excited. And I need my dog or horse to be excited if we want to win.
Redmond was a terrible puller when we first started out. I
used to use what was called a "half-hault" in my horse training days. I use the same "squeeze and release" today when I am trying to get my dog's head light, and his body to follow. They also know the "shake-the-lead" and the verbal sign, "easy". So now all I have to say is "easy" or shake the lead and he becomes light for me.
