The cross within the Colosseum was placed there in 2000 by Pope John Paul II to commemorate the Christian martyrs who were sacrificed in the Roman arena. Only after Emperor Constantine converted to Christianity many years later, Christianity legalised and became the state religion of the Roman Empire. And to honor all Martyrs who shed their blood on the colosseum, The Way Of the Cross (Kurishinte vazhi) on Good Friday is conducted here inside and around the Colloseum lead by the Pope.
