I worked there. Provided good paying middle class jobs for over 100 years. I'm forever great full for that mill. God bless all steelworkers that have passed thru those gates.

My grandfather worked there. Lived on 29th street I think...

Companies aren't fearful of fines and so-called criminal charges, since they're against no individual. If CEOs and higher management were personally held accountable, that would go a long way.

We should still have it up and running! It was good paying jobs that America will never see again because of bad policies!

I grew up in South Lorain, my dad worked there when it was known as the National Tube. The plant was sold to others and last I heard it was sold to foreigners/ out of the USA then it totally went bonkers. The last group that owned it made their money then pulled out leaving this mess! The state or people in Ohio shouldn’t have to pay for it.

Yes I've seen those slabs when I used to deliver parts to the remaining GM Powertrain buildings that were operational before 2010. It really was like seeing a ghost. There was an older building probably from the teens or 1920s that was still standing. So many worked there for years.

We must demand the companies clear out the buildings and trash and pollution left behind.

Reminds me of Manchester iron plant St. Louis no longer in work but when you take Am Trak from St. Lou west first shithole you see. Can't wait to get out of town. Hey they helped build St. Lou now just get over it and clean it up? Must give thx to old folk that labored there. Same as Oh. They didn't know anything other than feed my kids. I still feel the same must work shelter my kids. New World? no

Yeah sure because industry wants to go relocate to Lorain??? That site will sit vacant for 30 years... Lorain isn't exactly enticing....

Sadly I’ve heard Lorain has really went down, I loved it there. It was a beautiful place to grow up.

Will they take the remainder of the employees pension to clean up the site? The PBGC pension act took 50% to fix their poor money management 20yrs ago. Giving big corp. tax breaks and they just screw the employees out of their hard earned money.

The EPA is why we lost all of our heavy industry! And they wonder why so many companies close up and go overseas . That mill was there long before those houses reminds me people buy a house next to a airport then complain about the noise .

Cheap stuff does not work from overseas steel mills I worked on number 4 blast furnace in the90s ,in January we broke a record of 120000 tons of iron that month d Monroe it's still there in the market 🎉🎉

Our great, great, great grandchildren will be staring at that, just as it appears today.

We had companies close It has taken years for them to tear them down They had one company that got paid and never finished the job. So be careful what you wish for when getting these torn down And in some cases the taxpauers got stuck with it, JS

I was going to say there are factory buildings that have been closed since the 1970s that are still standing.

So sad. The plant closes it's doors from unprofitable regulations, then the government hammers them some more after they're defeated. All about that tax money. It's just a building and they sure weren't worried about it when it was generating tax revenue.

Stay off the property and it's not a problem. It wasn't an "eyesore" when it was operating. The supposed problems are not well explained by the video. What SPECIFIC issues are there and why does a cave-in roof matter?

Arson is the big one. Possibly leading to injury of emergency responders. Also, more added cost to the city to deal with, since the company seemingly won't. Trespassers getting hurt or worse is another issue the city seeks to avoid. Longterm, city seeks a more productive use to improve property values nearby and to boost its tax base.

@@ronbennett7885 the property is fenced, potential arson is a police department problem so is trespassing not Republic's problem. those are both crimes against republic's property. That plant when operating was a noisy industrial plant, with lots of truck traffic at all hours...and now that it's been shut down , it's a big problem? Someone could just as easily set fire to a high school that's currently operational, They could do the same to a Lowe's or Home Depot. Those buildings are vacated for part of the day every day or in a school's case they are vacant for 3 months of the year and not secured in any effective way to keep someone from trespassing, setting it a blaze, and having fire fighter's injured... You go on vacation leave your home abandoned for 2 weeks at a time..is your home suddenly a public nuisance?, someone could easily break in , set it on fire.

@@markbajek2541 The cost of response is a city problem. Including potential of serious injuries to firefighters, etc resulting in expensive medical bills. Demolishing unstable portions of damaged buildings after a fire would also be at city expense. Whether the company would reimburse the costs is an open question. Being they've abandoned the site, it's reasonable to assume the company won't be paying and may even be insolvent already.

@@ronbennett7885 Republic still pays property taxes...which just like any property owner of any size helps fund emergency services. So if your home catches fire, and someone gets injured..resulting in medical bills....guess what , those are the breaks it's part of a fire fighters job and risk exposure. There's zero difference between republic catching fire and a dumpster fire behind ace hardware with some aerosol cans exploding and sending debris at the fire fighters. Republic pays for fire suppression just like every other taxpayer in town.

You probably knew my dad Garl Smith, he worked in some places you mentioned & I believe retired from the lab. I know he was a pipe fitter. My ex worked at job where he fed the coal to furnace, it was awful & I worked at Ontario on 254.

I have seen abandoned industrial sites used as waste dumps by eco recycling companies. Makes it harder to clean up the mess.
