I mostly agree, except for the part about the guy not having a real complaint. Name one relationship that survives when partners do not spend time together. In fact, a major conflict for "dads" in movies is always working too much. They just reversed the genders here. She doesn't just work to support, she uses it as an excuse to avoid home and no longer takes part in her hobbies, which is a sign of a failing relationship. So her using work as an excuse to avoid personal time at home is a legitimate complaint.

That whole scene with the elephant got me. Before they enter the castle, they both wonder why Rose likes the elephant so much even though she outgrew it years ago. The build-up to that entire castle sequence basically showed that the parents think toys = love, but Rose wants their affection, not toys. They both express disbelief and denial at her emotional state in the space command center, showing they are not interacting with her like they should be. They don't make the connection that their fighting is having a very negative impact on Rose's mental health, and given how selfish they are portrayed throughout the story I don't think they CAN make the connection without outside help (Hakim, you missed out on a big opportunity there). Rose has been severely emotionally neglected by both parents, and has turned to her baboon and elephant toy to cope with her depression, anxiety, and loneliness. For me there were some big tells that they are neglecting Rose in the first and second acts. When Cody's body, sitting in a chair, doesn't respond at all to Rose, she doesn't ask "is something wrong?" or "why are not you not saying anything?". Instead she says "You're busy, sorry", indicating this is a normal interaction for her to have with Cody, as even a child her age should suspect something is wrong if Cody is sitting at his desk not saying anything. That's a big red flag that something is seriously wrong with their relationship. This ties into Cody's disbelief that she hasn't laughed lately and is sad; he doesn't actually interact with her in the house and makes assumptions about how she's doing rather than ask her how she's feeling. May meanwhile was sleeping on the couch, presumably because she was tired from working overtime on a weekend, so her not waking up when Rose talks to her is a bit more understandable. This is also an indication that Rose is so lonely that she goes out of her way to talk to her sleeping mom and not expect May to wake up, as Rose doesn't seem surprised May didn't wake up. For this type of response to come from what is likely a first or second grader implies a long time being neglected. I assume she's a first or second grader based on her homework being basic addition, she knows how to write, and the command center showing that her worry levels are lowest at 9am and 12pm, going up at 3pm implying she's not thinking about her parents fighting while at school. In that elephant scene we're not just witnessing a misguided toy murder, we're witnessing two selfish adults who don't understand their daughter's current emotional state destroy Rose's coping mechanism and trigger a mental breakdown. When Rose was writing the farewell letter, she might have decided to hide it then leave some other day, but seeing her damaged toy broke her. I strongly suspect she was projecting herself into Cutie, who was surrounded by actual castle walls and caring servants sworn to protect her. We already saw this with Moon Baboon, who was given the mission to protect her and attacks her parents who want to make Rose cry. I don't think Rose was crying over her toy being broken, like her parents think she is. I think she legit broke down emotionally as her depression and anxiety took over after her coping mechanism was damaged (aka the queen in the safe castle), blaming herself for Cutie "hurting herself" then deciding to run away. All of this is happening while her parents are cheerfully trying to get hit by her tears of despair, without understanding the true scale of the problem they themselves have caused over years of neglect. Even at the end of the game, her selfish parents still don't realize just how badly they have neglected their daughter. If the game wanted a true "good" ending, the fact that Cody being at home all the time and not understanding Rose's emotional state, as well as both parent's failure to provide any form of emotional stimulation - or even simple interaction given how chill Rose was with her parents' unconscious bodies completely ignoring her - needed to be addressed. I'm kind of surprised that I've only seen 1 review talk about the child neglect aspect of this story and how it gets glossed over. Children of parents that go through divorce are often left emotionally scarred for the rest of their life (this is true for my father and his siblings) as the court system focuses on the parents and often ignores the children's state of mind. The game could've highlighted this in a positive way as additional levels/acts to repair the relationship between parents and child before the parents get their bodies back. Hakim even hints at this a bit when he tears up the letter and says "you're not ready for this". Instead the game shows us the damage done to Rose and does nothing to address a real issue facing children who find themselves in a similar situation. I wonder if the writers and animators originally planned on addressing the child neglect aspect of the story, but due to budget or schedule reasons were unable to do so. The ending, which focuses only on the parent-parent relationship, seems very out of place given how much detail was put into subtly painting the picture of the entire family's relationships with each other, including between the parents and their daughter.

Yeah, wholeheartedly agree. I knew I could never play this game when the elephant scene started. It's gross. Any loving, caring parent would try to find some other alternative. Also, I couldn't help but roll my eyes when they started reading her letter and assumed it was about how to make them human again... the game mechanics do look fun, but I could not play as characters that neglect their child and don't seem to learn that lesson at the end of the game.

The game was a refreshing change of pace from the AAA stuff that’s usually shoved down our throats. I especially liked how much respect they gave to the situation the couple was in. They slowly went from hating each other to being neutral, to being friends, to rediscovering how much they mean to each other as well as teaching them how their problems were with themselves, not their partners.

Really interesting that you feel like the husband being mad at the wife working all the time is dumb. When you're with someone and they're never around, are you really with them? When you feel neglected it's a form of emotional trauma. Yes, she's the provider and working long hours and during the weekend to put food on the table, but, like the game says, she's doing it for 'them', and in doing so, she's lost her husband and marriage. She lost track of that, the reasons why she's working. In trying to provide for her family so 'well', she lost the very thing she was trying to be a provider for. Money and 'stuff' doesn't make you happy. Working less and having to downgrade your life a little for more time with those you love is a sacrifice that will pay dividends in the long term.

If you are working 7days a week 80hrs with commuting it's not good for either person in that relationship. It's more typically seen in men back in the day, where men with office/ management type get too invested in careers and neglect their partner and children. I mean it's the plot to soo many movies

One of the best games I've played in recent memory. The ending was the only let down. Never felt they should have made up. A more powerful ending would be them realising they really do have a failed marriage but that doesn't mean they can't be partners in sharing the challenges of parenting, and then sharing that new reality with their (apparently slightly disabled) daughter.

There are so many great single player games out there but I’ve struggled to find any co-op games worth playing with my family that were fun and engaging the entire time. This game was perfect for that. It’s so much fun going level to level with completely different gameplay and level designs every time. This game surprised me at every given opportunity. I mean, who could possibly expect that you would be fighting a squirrel street fighter style whilst flying on an underwear plane? Oh yeah, also the fact that it has a bit of swearing but nothing too vulgar so that kids can play too. I love that detail because our characters are adults, they would be cussing if they were stuck in the bodies of some inanimate dolls. I was just expecting it to be okay but it went above and beyond. And one thing I was actually hoping for that it succeeded at, it’s actually a little bit hard. Not too hard that you can’t play with younger family members but not so easy that it’s boring. Honestly a great game, I totally recommend for anyone who wants a family friendly co-op game(as long as you don’t mind a bit of light swearing) or anyone who wants to plays this with an online friend. Gameplay aside the voice acting and story is also pretty good. Although Dr. Hakim gets a bit annoying at points. And some dialogue is....questionable. And like they said the sound design is fantastic. And the fact that your friends can just play it with you for free. Buy it immediately.

This game deserves more recognition. This is my game of the year so far! although that might not mean much considering the game releases recently but this truly feels like a great game that needs to be played and advertised more. I personally don't think it deserves 'just an indie game' title this should be getting called main stream game that more gamers should give it a try.

Hey Alex, great review. For the one please watch the sound levels of your commentary and the stream sound and make them even. Your commentary was really quiet compared to the stream sound.

Invited my sister over for this game and enjoyed it a ton. We grew up with couch co-op and this really brought back the fun. Would recommend unravelled 2 and the newer rayman games for more co-op goodness.

Pre-ordered the game before its release. Played it with a friend. Fell in love with that friend,,,,, like one way,,,, pretty sure he didn't (doesn't/ won't) feel the same way back So it's a pretty damn good game. So good that even after all this long I still search for people complementing it...

This game deserved way more than a rapid review. The game is absolutely awesome and comes up with so many new mechanics, such an immersive gameplay and such amazing level design, emphasizing the co-op adventure to a whole new dimension. Really hope more companies will dare to come up with creative gameplay and mechanics and follow through this direction.

It's intersting to see Alex's priorities with relationships and work in this review come out. The way the game is set up, it's clear that she is married to her work with no time for family. As she has a habit of working weekends even though they seem monetarily fine, nice big house, car, etc. Coming from a capitalist working culture myself, this was one of the hurdles I too had to get over when I married in Germany, where they prioritize work life balance. My wife and even my colleagues had to remind me at times hey you are in Germany, you don't need to do over hours, company pays you x for y hours not more you don't owe them more, but you owe to your family. It took me until my son was born to truly embrace this mentality, want to spend more time with him, finance can be managed but time with him and my impact on it will not come back, once lost. Alex, think about the message of the game.

I'm playing this with my husband and I must say that a lot of what they say and do resonate even though we are not in the same circumstances as the characters. I hate that book too, but I think that is at least partially the point. As I see it, Dr Hakim is the personification of their daughter's naive wish for her parents to stay together and is not a licensed therapist. We haven't finished the game yet, so maybe theres still stuff coming up that contradicts that, we'll see. In any case, we love playing the game and have argued fewer times over the game than with other co-op titles, so that score is well waranted.
