As much as I adore using mods, I fully intend to do a vanilla playthrough when 42 comes out so I can experience what QOL updates the devs have inserted into the base game. Most of my sadness with the delays to 42 isn't so much communication from the dev team or the drawn out hype but rather a lot more personal. The person who introduced me to PZ unfortunately passed away this year and we had previously discussed the excitement of animals coming to the game and how we can experience it together when it comes out. I still am eager for the next big update but I am sad I will never be able to experience it with my friend.

From the info given in the dev-logs, it looks like they had rewrite a bunch of the code for the lighting, rendering, all on top of revamping the crafting framework. I mean they did admit they bit off more than they could chew with the crafting rework, could have kept more features on the backburner... But on the flip side, the performance improvements, the foundations for the crafting + NPCs with the animal AI; this update is laying *major* groundwork for future updates! I can't wait to see what modders do with the new update :)

Just what I was thinking. Yes its taking a long while but I am sure the game will feel so diferent when it comes. As if a conpletely new game. Besides rewriting a games code takes forever, not something to be envied. A lot of hard work that will be worth it in the end as a groundwork for future content. This reminds me of Starsector, Unreal or DwarfFortress. Small teams with long Dev cycles however they bring bangers praricaly for free! I will keep following zomboid Devs, I can wait, have a backlog of games to go trought anyways, besides can always go for some more zomboid here and there, its a very replayable game.

I'm honestly ok with waiting longer for an update if it's quality and not rushed. I think people overlook the modding part of this update, the new framework they are building for the game systems will have a MASSIVE effect on the kinds of mods that can be created from them. So the content for the update might be limited but the mods that will come from it will be all the content you could ask for.

I have quite a big friend group surrounding zomboid. However, I have seen a pretty significant decrease in playing zomboid and now we basically never play it. It's true that adding one thing at a time in tiny updates doesn't really drive anyone to get back on. But similarly, a big update years after people have lost interest has an even higher ceiling in what they need to achieve to get people to go through the faff of reinvesting. I think a healthy balance needs to be found somewhere between. A bunch of people waiting and wondering why the update is taking long, only to be drip-fed a dev update saying they've added Jpegs of newspaper headlines whenever you read newspapers does not invigorate people's excitement for the wait.

My bet is that they're stuck on something of a technical performance thing (with the lighting thing or something) and everybody else working on it is just waiting for the release as well, but continuing on development on whatever part they work on. And since the release takes so long to come out, more work gets done, new ideas get pitched, and you get scope creep. Scope creep is the road to development hell.

Being one of the ogs, playing the game for the last decade at least, I'm just worried that they lost track of what they are doing a little bit. I remember when B41 was about to come out, they said that it wouldn't take such a long time for the builds afterwards to come out since the graphical update was difficult task that would smooth things afterwards. Almost 3 years have passed and we dont have any concrete news about B42 coming out not even in full swing but as a beta. Could be a month, could be a year. They keep talking about new ideas and stuff they are going to add that was never referenced before and i love them for that but maybe they lost a bit of focus on what they should do. Systems first, overhauls later.

As someone whose put over 900 hours in the game, loved every moment, and paid like £10 for that experience, it’s really hard to get into the mindset of someone who is legit frustrated at the devs for the speed of updates. I get the suggestion of a community manager or something similar and can see why that would be good. But the guys behind this game have more than enough goodwill from me to be patient about this kind of thing.

As someone who's worked on projects, some features tie into other features. It's like building a 2nd floor of apartments before completing the 1st floor w/ utility demark. 2nd fl w/o power and water would just suck and not "work properly." To give big features, sometimes you need to hold off on the smaller dependent ones. Before you say some don't depend on others, so release those... sometimes they are dependent in the background in ways you'd not expect. This isn't to excuse anything, just remember that unless you're developing this game, you do not know all the details or exactly how their process works. But I do definitely agree on one thing, consistency in constant communication with the community would probably help. EDIT: Comment was made mid-video lol.

Doesn't matter if it's a formal post, or an employee posting anywhere online. The only difference is, the company should be firm with their employees about what is posted regarding upcoming projects. And if there is a slip, they should post a correction. As a consumer, it's our responsibility to never believe anything that isn't out. But this is still on the company most. And yes, you read assumptions into the posts. Reasonable assumptions, but still not good to do assumptions without mentioning things being assumption vs fact in every instance mentioned. I get you know this, my main point it the irresponsibility over accountability for all employees actions when related to your company. I still don't care when anything comes out. I still don't want release dates for any entertainment media over 2 months out. I'm surprised it's a huge fuss. I'd like it sooner than later. But whatever.

In most of their games, updates are indeed fairly regular (2-3 major ones per year). And yes, this schedule, although good for the games in the long run, is the source of many laments on the mod devs' discord servers. But I think the updates are still spaced out fairly well, which always gives them some working room. I really don't think development schedules had anything to do with the success of Project Zomboid in December 2021, but rather they mostly were the beneficiaries of hype about the update through the tail end of the various national lockdowns, that saw a large bump in gaming in general. I've been waiting since 2014, and I'm happy to keep waiting for as long as it takes to get it right: Each update has added something more to the game, given me a few hundred more hours of fun, and I'm perfectly happy to continue in that cycle. Roll on retail release circa-2032.

As someone who was part of that 41 influx I am fine tooling around waiting for the game to *fundamentally change* but zomboid plays are something I rove in and out of between other activities. I think the large drops make the most sense to not leave us weakening out own community through mod support and constant server issues every change. I would hope that continued success allows the team to continue to grow which results in either these updates being bigger or being more solid when they drop, but with the state of how the larger game development is going I would rather the team stay strong and within their means than rush to a quick death. But, I am used to following things like Dwarf Fort, Banished, Manner Lords and other groups that take literal decades, but are built on solid gameplay systems as pull. A lot to say, I am okay taking their time, because this sure as s--- ain't vaporware.

I do not think other similar games can beat project zomboid because this game has a lot of interesting systems and elements what makes it unique. Only thing can ruin a game is it's own developers with bad marketing or messed up content. For example there are like 15-20 dino survival game on the market but 3 major game exists yet and there are 2 serious contender to grab playerbase but the overall genre is a niche market with fewer players. Also trends always changing and some game slowly become less interesting while other ones becoming popular. Developers also following trends but in my knowledge the PZ is a long timer game, along with Starsector, Kenshi, and some other ones but no other games really covering these niches what these games govern.

I think what you've got here is a pretty fair and decent assessment of the situation, I also think you don't have any reason to apologise to use, Mr Duck, but I appreciate your candor and I completely understand why you feel like you should. You can only report on the news TIS puts out and that's what you do (in your ineffable waterfowly ways) no harm, no foul, no knickers twisted so to speak. I think the fault with the misunderstanding over potential release timing falls squarely at their doorstep, they could have said something earlier to better explain what was meant once they saw the confusion (as I'm sure they keep tabs on the community at large). They didn't and that's ok, water under the proverbial bridge and I'm certainly not upset about it, everyone makes the occasional gaff, no big deal. I do like the detail they've been putting in the dev-blogs of late, I do think they've been trying to explain a bit more of the process as well (maybe to make up for the blunder) and it goes without saying that I'm absolutely buzzing for B42 when it gets here. I do get the feeling that developmental things might have snowballed on their end in terms of how much work it's going to be to actually do everything they're planning, I mean let's be honest it's looking like B42 is going to somewhat of a major overhaul of the game mechanics and engine. As far as release schedules in general go I'm perfectly fine with either option, I have a feeling what we're going to see is a hybrid version. We're currently in the long delay / big release phase for B42, but given what they've been saying and hinting at recently I think once that drops we're likely to see a switch to quicker / smaller updates for a period of time so they can release all the additional features and extra bits that don't make it into the initial release. Then settle back into a longer delay as they work on the core of Build 43, whatever that may be. I've been with PZ since 2013 so I've been through a lot of this before in some ways, I may step away from time to time, try other zombie games, but I always end up getting drawn back in. Build 42 will come out when it's ready and I'll be here to enjoy it when it does! Cheers Mr Duck! And thanks to anyone that waded through this unnecessarily wordy post! 😁

I do think they would benefit from a slightly faster release cycle, but another reason they aren't keen on a new release every two weeks is the absolute hell that would turn the mod scene into. Now, a new release comes out every couple years, and it takes a week for the more popular mods to all update, with a long tail of mods we wish would update and don't, and then they get forked or rebuilt. Imagine that process starting every two weeks... But a fixed release schedule, say once a year or maybe even every six months, would help them avoid biting off more than they can chew, a problem they have run into over and over again. It costs them extra time when they get closer to a theoretical release date and they need to start cutting things back out for stability and consistency, the way they're doing with some of the features in 42...

I feel disappointed, when B41 came out they said it wouldn't take as long for future updates to release. Then they mention the crafting system multiple times as one of the main pillars for B42; now, aware of the fact that beta is not coming out on the first half of the year, they still need to release the crafting system incomplete so that, according to their own 2024 release statement, it won't get pushed back even further. So that means that if they were to release B42 as they had envisioned 2 years ago it would've presumably (from their own official statements I already mentioned) gone further than 2024. TLDR I feel they now have to cut crafting system content from beta because otherwise it would probably release on 2025, basically taking as long to develop B42 (Dec. 2021 stableB41 - 2025?) as B41 (Oct. 2018 stableB40 - Dec. 2021) did.

I am to state my opinion on the length of the update. Nothing bad, just the thought process behind is it a good time frame or not. (This is going to be a long one.) I think that the update is taking too long, but only by a little bit. I understand all the work going in and I don't want them to rush it. I also know that the last update took about 3 years and so it isn't out of the question, but there are some reasons that I say its taking too long by a little bit. When the multiplayer update came out was when I got into the game, I also ended up buying about 5 copies for friends because of how much I loved it and just wanted people to try it. It also marked a large influx of players and thus more copies sold and as we know more copies so means more money and more money means more employees. The increase in employees is something that throughout the thursdoids they have pointed out as well so that should have a positive effect on turn around time. If you mix the amount of work they are doing, the problems that arise when trying to integrate the features with the coding and well the new coding itself I do understand the wait, not to mention their statements themselves about how build 41 was their longest update and that they weren't going to do it again (not those exact words). So when I was reading the thursdoids, seeing the new recruitment's, seeing the development roadmap, and the earlier statements on how they didn't want to spend as much time as build 41 I truly expected sometime in the late 2023 maybe early 2024 time frame for such a major update. So it seems just a little too long. This leads nicely into my next 2 points. Build 41 brought a lot of people in and the roadmap suggested more frequent updates. I think the long development time leads to 2 issues that are going to be difficult for the indie stone to overcome. The first being how many players have stopped playing, don't get me wrong they seem to have stabilized around the 35-40 thousand mark and that is still really good, but that is still a loss of about 1/3 from their highest point. If they would have have smaller and more frequent releases (like once a year, not a month or a few months between) then, I believe, that would have had more people talking about the new things added, people would have come back more often to check out what changed and they could have possibly had more growth in the steady players over time. But that is a matter of opinion and not a matter of fact. But I can draw a correlation to another game, one that the Indie stone team as said they tend to draw inspiration from Minecraft. The yearly updates tend to bring people back to play yearly, even for me and I don't pay attention to the updates. It is almost like I am conditioned to want to play Minecraft once a year for a good amount of time and then just stop. That is not to say that Indie stone has the same capital or employees to do such a thing. But even just adding features as they go would be a good draw for people to check back in regularly. (But this also mean that people would see the HUGE change that is going to happen when a big update comes. So positive and negatives, take that how you will.) The second issue is that now that roadmap looks a lot different. What looked like updates that would take 5 to 7 years is seeming to look more like 15 to 20 years and that doesn't seem viable from a developer stand point or a "longevity in player base" standpoint. There is be a lot of people who will change dramatically in the time it now looks like and I think the core playerbase that they have cultured will be fractured if that is what the future holds. A lot of player finding something new, changing interests, and just growing out of gaming may lead to a lot of the players not getting to see the end vision. I mean think of this, the image they gave means that the first npc update will not be done for another 1 1/2 to 2ish years after this update which means about 5 years since they announced it and that's just the initial npc update. That is a long time and brings a lot of worry to someone like me who has been hyped about that update for the entire length build 42 has been being worked on. To put it into perspective, I am worried that I will be in my late 40's before the roadmap is finished and that.... is not good. Again, these is an opinions and have no ill will intended in them. I personally am not angry or frustrated as much as concerned. With that said this is their game and I know it's a passion project so far be it to me to ell them how to do it or to criticize them for how they make it. You keep doing you Indie Stone, I will be cheering for your success until I no longer can. TLDR; (By paragraph) 1. I expected a long development but I expected about a year less time due to the increase funding (from the success of build 41) which led to more employees. (Proud of you Indie Stone, you guys deserve the success) 2. I think releasing smaller updates more often would have led to more players and more consistent player even though they haven't done too bad in that department. But, with that said the longer larger updates are going to lead to players "seeing" the big changes all at once. 3. With the length of build 42, it makes the development roadmap look to the games detriment rather than it's benefit in the long term. Note: This is Indie Stones game and I know the passion they have, I know they have a vision and I want them to take it at their pace. These are more observations and concerns and if Indie Stone reads this don't let any criticism change your view. Just keep the passion, keep loving what your are doing, and it will shine through your work. I wish all the success for the dedicated team that built and is still working on my favorite game. Edited to add this: I think this video did a good job on explaining thought processes and the understanding about the development process that makes it hard to just focus on once feature and the negatives that would come with more frequent updates and there is large amount of examples that show the section of about mods to be true. I just wanted to give the props for the video itself.

small frequent updates are nice, but what can you manage in this short time? a new vehicle. a few new weapons or new clothing models. plus a few fixes and balancings. nice, but mods will do that better. (sometimes even fixes) that is why big updates with komplett overhaul.

8:12 From a software development perspective, there is also *significant* overhead to releasing. Each small release would require additional QA time, bureaucracy to submit the release to Steam (and get it approved), splitting off a release branch which can pause the development of certain features, possible post-release emergency bug fixes, etc. Longer waits between releases mean longer cycles of uninterrupted development, with all the dev flexibility that comes with it. We'd get a bunch of tiny features but all the big ones would take longer to come out.

I'm just worried that this update is going to be the way of things going forward. I understand they are working on a huge amount of things for this update, but things like NPC updates feel like they will be even bigger. How long can we expect the npcs updates to take? 3 years each? 4? If they are given this huge success with each huge update, it feels like they may just get bigger and bigger, and wait time longer and longer. They say alot of this is stuff that is needed for the npcs and alot of the systems are pretty complex in this current one but i just don't know if they have a huge grip on what all is going to be in each update. Scope creep seems kind of out of hand on an update to update basis.

Look on the bright side, them making animals in build 42 only provides clearer framework into the future of zomboid with NPCs, build 42 is literally labeled in the roadmap as npcs version 1 or something.
