"It's time to show who I am now": Dog sitter recovering after losing face in horrific dog attack

Police video cameras captured the moments they were trying to contain the dogs who attacked Jacqueline Durand, who was pinned down and mauled on her first day dog sitting. Jacqueline lost her face and received more than 800 bites and still faces years of reconstructive surgeries. David Begnaud reports.

Yes, I dog sit and have never had an outburst and recently a client got attacked by the dogs. A few days after my gig was done and she wanted to blame it on me. I found that ridiculous because I didn’t do anything unusual to make them aggressive. Have never had this issue before she wants to act like her Rottweiler is so innocent but they can be unpredictable dogs. It’s a good thing. It was nothing major like this case but people need to stop pretending their dog is a little angel from above. For all we know, the owners may have contacted a lawyer in preparation for any law suits or criminal charges that may come of this. It kind of helps mitigate the idea that they are careless and negligent if they volunteer the money that they at least owed her for the day. Not anything beyond that just what she was to be paid. This is a gruesome attack and although you don’t want to admit “guilt” you definitely want your defense attorney to get up and say; “they feel terrible about this.” Maybe even draw up and offer a settlement instead of making her go through this whole legal process. Sure it’s going to cost a lot over time but I mean it’s their fault. So they should be ready to humbly negotiate, don’t ya think?

Some dog owners have a weird sort of "white wolf" mentality towards their pet dogs that they know are problematic. They think their dogs are special and that makes them feel more connected with their dog instead of recognizing that the dog is dangerous. It's not out of the realm of possibility that the owners of the two dogs blame the victim in this case, since she entered their home and the dogs attacked, and now the owners are forced to put the dogs to sleep and they're being sued. Many people would acknowledge their negligence and do everything they could to help... but some people put up their defenses and choose to see themselves as the victims.

For real. I work in a dog daycare and boarding facility so I've only ever been bitten on purpose once, and I definitely saw it coming. A dog tried to escape it's kennel and without thinking I tried hooking my hands around his thighs to slow him down enough to get a lead on him. He was already acting pretty nervous that day so he got scared and whipped around and bit my hand once. I absolutely deserved it. It's not like he could have gone anywhere, it was just in the facility, I should have let him go and then caught up with him to try to calm him down. He's a super sweet dog and we're still buddies, it's just important to pay attention. Very rarely will animals freak out like that without warning.

In my case, two dogs had left their property. I think it was key to my survival that I never entered their property. When six of my neighbors ran at the dogs, they left me and ran home. The owner was home and did nothing to help me. The judge only fined her and put one of her dogs down, yet they had attacked 3 other people.

I want them to be sued for her constructive surgeries and therapy costs. They have two aggressive dog breeds. (And before anyone attacks me, most countries list them as such. And not because of some wives tale or stereotype) these dogs get aggressive if they aren’t trained or are carelessly bred. They should have taken the time to train these dogs properly and ensure that they could be left alone. It’s all just negligence on their end. Finding blame and intent where they can even if that was not the case. A beware of dogs signs is different then the fun family sign. Sad we don't know the difference. I'd like to add dog can be vastly different from when the owners are present vs when owners are not Especially if the owners are not present. I wonder how many people have that sign unknowing if an accident happens it can use the simple sign against them. I'm never getting any signs in my house because of this now. *What is the Gospel?* The true gospel is the good news that God saves sinners. Man is by nature sinful and separated from God with no hope of remedying that situation. But God, by His power, provided the means of man’s redemption in the death, burial, and resurrection of the Savior, Jesus Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9 For it is by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of GOD, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. Romans 10:9 9 because, if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. JESUS CHRIST can come anytime! REPENT OF YOUR SINS Just Believe ❤️ Love you and GOD BLESS

This is literally so horrifying and I can't even imagine what she was going through when the actual attack was happening. It's so scary the damage that animals can do. And it wasn't even just one dog it was two and they literally tore her to pieces. And the fact that the owners didn't even reach out and apologize to her really makes the whole situation even more suspicious because if you claim that you've never had a single issue with either one of those dogs and that they weren't aggressive or anything like that the first thing you would be doing is reaching out to that person and letting them know how sorry you are and paying them for their services. The fact that they didn't do any of those things is odd. And that is such a slap in the face because she came over there to help them with watching their dogs and instead she left on a stretcher almost dead with body parts missing. SMH

I have been a professional pet sitter for 32 years and I can't begin to tell you the impact Jacqueline's story has had throughout the pet sitting world. A lot of us are re-evaluating how we conduct meet and greets, how we enter homes and many of us are thinking back at times that we could have been in the same kind of trouble but we were just luckier. Although pet sitting is typically not considered to be a high risk job what happened to Jacqueline shows that a pet sitter should always be on guard and that a situation can change in a flash. So please, whether you're a professional sitter or taking care of a neighbor's dog across the street, always be careful. For those of you who hire professional sitters to care for whatever pets you may have please appreciate them because they work hard for you.

Agreed. I was a dog sitter for many years and felt pretty confident in my knowledge of dog behavior (many young pet sitters truly dont know enough about dog behavior to be pet sitting) but there only 1 dog that I actually got scared of. I did not like his vibes from the beginning. He was a GSD mix. But he was "okay" and he was toy motivated so we would go out and play fetch in the yard. Then he started getting very possessive of his crate. He would willingly go back into his crate but I would go to close it and he lunged and tried to attack me as I was closing the door. Obviously shook me up and I let the owner know and we had another meet and greet again with the owner present and when I went to open the back door to show our routine, he nipped at my hand when I reached for the door. I was smart enough to know at that point, nope, I was not risking myself for a measly $15 or w/e it was. But I think of how many times I went there alone prior, and god forbid something had happened.... I guess i was just lucky.

@Marie Bussinger: What in the world kind or type of dog does not chase rabbits, or at least want to? I’ve had many dogs and growing up in the country, I have yet to meet one dog that would not gladly chase rabbits or squirrels at the drop of a hat! That is in their nature. The point is, if you don’t want them to take off chasing other animals, either train them well, keep them on a leash or inside a fence.

This kind of owners are in denial, when my son was 8years old he was attacked by my neighbor’s pit bull, when the ambulance came they called the animal control and the officer that went to get the dog got attacked too, in a matter of days the dog had his own trial ( yes in court) and was sentenced to death immediately, my neighbor was furious and started blaming my kid and the officer and a couple of other people that were attacked too, she never ask how my son was or apologize, she harassed me and my husband to the point that we move out to another place to get rid of her, it was truly like an episode of fear that neighbor 😭 even guns involved. She was crazy and the dog was her victim, and then us. Thank God we are far from her now. 🙏🏼

LOTS of these people are! I've trained Shepherds for 40 years. It takes commitment, consistency, and you have to be at least as smart as the dog to do it correctly. It's staggering how few people nowadays lack all 3 of those attributes. You can just look at the way the majority of children act in the present day to realize this, never mind animals. Kids and pets are both being done a GREAT disservice by people who create monsters with their ignorance.
