Get a PVC rain Barrell and put a spigot in the lower part. Fill it up with water from your hose until you can get the rainwater. That's what we did. 6' section of hose to fill our buckets from the Barrell. For Tim's allergies, get some local raw honey. My grandson had asthma and allergies and started taking local raw honey and decreased his issues so much.

This works great. I started taking 1 tablespoon morning and night. I also us it in my tea. I do this year round and do not have any allergy problems. It helps build your immunity system. Last year was my first yet 😊

Don’t put plants too close to edge, because the metal will get really hot and kill your plants. And give plants more water, to sink down to roots and don’t pour water on leaves of plants.🌱

Having a garden, farm animals, and keeping up with housework takes a lot of energy.

Hello lovely Valerie. Just a little advice, plant your plants a little further in from the metal edge of your raised beds - the metal can heat up & fry the roots. Also, herbs such as rosemary, need less water than vegetable crops, so might be better in a separate bed or pots. Also, put a lot more water on than you are doing, thoroughly soak them. It's also better to do your daily watering either first thing in the morning or in the evening, but not in full sun. Good luck xxx

On the metal planters that you have you don’t have to fill them completely full of dirt. You can start out by putting sticks shredded paper, leaves to kind of cut down on how much soil you have to put in and that stuff will turn into compost or dirt. When you’re done planting, and everything is up in straw between your straw or cardboard between your rows. It helps hold moisture in and cuts down on the weeds.

I must tell you Valerie, we have something in common that's for sure, as well as many here watching. I love working in the garden and flower beds too and wish i could just snap my fingers and everything is done! It was in the 70s here today so I spent the entire day working in the gardens and green house til the time got away from me! I dont know where the time went as it was 7pm and dinner wasn't made! I did the same thing you're doing and I bet you were as exhausted as me! Now that I sat down everything hurts! Try not to work so hard Valerie! And tell that Tim to rest, doctors orders! Lol! ❤

Top soil is for lawns, for starting grass seed. Raised beds need 3 way garden soil which is bought in bulk at a nursery. It contain soil, compost & other organic material. You have to buy from a reputable business so you dont get a bad mix. I fill my beds with 1/2 garden soil & half compost (not fertilizer but organic compost). Compost is a huge part of a raised bed. Make sure your other raised beds are filled with 3 or 4 way garden soil & compost & stay away from top soil. I've been gardening for over 50 yrs & have learned all these lessons the hard way!

The dirt on your property looks very rich. My aunt taught me a lot about gardening. Since I live in Florida we have very sandy soil. She told me to put all my leaves every year in my garden areas. ( called the lasagna affect…) we add black cow every year. I have several areas. Doing the leaves every year, by the 4 th year we noticed our dirt is no longer sandy….its black with worms! I tried the raised beds but it takes too much water. The water goes to the bottom and top half stays dry. Now we just disc up the backyard and plant in rows. My herbs, tomatoes, peppers , spinach, lettuce,green onions are in my immediate fenced yard in buckets close to the back door and kitchen for cooking. We have fruit trees on the outside perimeter of our property ( only1/2 acre) that produce at different times . It’s a food forest. It’s been a journey, but it’s fun. My front yard is totally tropical ornamental plants. We just planted our veggies last weekend. - watching from Lake Wales,Florida

We've had a garden for 5 years. The soil was hard and clumpy (clayish) and over the years we have added peat moss, black cow manure, calicum , lime and this year chicken manure. Our cukes, onions, lettuce, green beans, cabbage and cherry tomatoes have done well. We experienced end rot on our larger tomatoes for a few years but think 🤞we will have it conquered this upcoming season. Plant Basil with your tomatoes it serves them well.

Valerie, I hope you get your chickens soon. Years ago, my family bought a home in SoCal that backed up to the National Forest. We had abundant land of our own to start a great gardening hobby. Our neighbor was a ninety-year-old retired chicken rancher. He told us there was nothing better than chicken manure. He was right! We bought sone chickens PDQ. Everything we used chicken manure on produced in profusion, from our veg to our roses! Pretty soon our hobby fed the neighborhood. We kept our chickens close to the house so we could hear any ruckus in the form of raccoons or foxes trying to raid our coops. We saved them a few times, partly owing to motion sensor lights surrounding those coops. It is now so much fun to watch you guys creating your own garden.

Looking good! For your other raised beds, you can try putting branches, twigs, and leaves into the beds to fill-up 1/3 to 1/2 and then put soil on top of that. Since the plants don’t need the entire height for root growth, you can save money on soil!

Valerie don't forget Lettuce likes a lot of water....lettuce is made of almost all water....so you will need to give it a good dose of water when you water them....and your rosemary....be cautious not to keep it long term where you have it planted...rosemary turns into a tree bush when older...I am loving what ya'll doing with the back garden....coming along so nicely!! The wildflowers will look amazing in that area!!

Make sure the plants get along, some will grow better next to a companion plant.

On your next beds you can fill about 1/2 full with less expensive soil, tree branches. You really only need about 12-14 inches of fluffy soil so dont go crazy with good soil for the entire bed. and keep amending with good quality compost. MIGardner just had a video out on bagged soil and that Epic gardner guy also has an informative video on the bagged soil.💕💕🎶🎶

Things are looking good! If you have deer and rabbits in your area you might want to reconsider and plant your flowers inside the fence! The critters will eat them up in no time at all🤨

Valerie you need to get a small tubular irrigation system in each of your beds. Hook it up to a rain barrel and in between rains, fill it. The small tubing is super easy to connect and lay into your beds. My son in law does it every year in raised beds. He also has his hooked to their hose. But since you’re so far away from house just use a rain barrel or two or three. Turn the spigot and you’ve got water to every plant! Fill bottoms of your beds with wood chips and wheelbarrows of leaves; and literally all your kitchen compost. Yup- everything you can throw in a compost bin you can just dump straight into the bottom, water it and top off with peat moss and soil. No need to turn it deep. Just the moss and soil a bit to get it started. Water it very well and you will have earthworms galore doing all your composting for you and leaving wonderful worm castings. Your raised bins will act as their own compost heap. Banana peels, fruit, potato peelings etc all the cardboard, you name it. Dump it all in your beds before filling with soil and planting. It’s SO much easier and takes out the hard steps and you will get the richest black soil to start with in no time! Don’t waste all those leaves and sticks.

Fill your water containers and bring them down in your wagon. Let the lawnmower do the work. A great gardener to watch is Acre Homestead.

A good bit of sphagnum moss will help your dirt a lot. Also, they make a tank that will fit on the back of your four-wheeler that you can fill with water. Then you could make 1 trip. and it has a hose hook up on it.

Looking good Valerie. As a longtime gardener, be sure to give your plants a good drink of water. Make sure to water the soil and not the plant. Watering the plant can cause the sun to burn it, and can also create problems for the plant from disease. We used a drip system and soaker hoses. If you use a rain barrel having a small slanted roof covered shade area will give you a roof to collect water from. It can also be an area to sit and relax for a bit when gardening. With gutters and a downspout it will help to guide the water from a metal roof into the water catch basin. I'm pretty sure that you could connect a hose to a hose bib on the barrel and place a soaker hose in the garden and allow the garden to basically water itself. Turn off the spigot and move the soaker hose to the next area to be watered.

If you put clean, used styrofoam, aluminum cans, or broken bits of clay pots in the bottom of your planters, you won't need as much soil to fill them and the fillers will prevent soil from going out of the drainage holes. Pieces of landscape fabric and egg cartons will work, too.

You can also spread a bag of lime over your soil to help soften it

Take sone five gallon buckets if you have fill with water then your watering can drive them down to garden then use the gallon bucket to refill your watering can! 😊

I think you guys are phenomenal. The way ya'll work together, people should pay attention and learn!! Great job!!

Buy a couple 32 gallon trash cans from Home Depot, build 3ft stands for them to sit on by your garden, take the lids and cut an opening where a sink drain mesh basket would sit in the center cut smaller then the drain basket outer circle to catch debri, add a spigot 3"- 4" from bottom of the trash can. Now the trash can lid is upside down to catch the rain water. You may need to secure the lid with holes and zipties to keep wind from blowing off. Rainbarrel collecting from your roof is collecting particles from your shingles which is not a healthy way to go. There are so many ways to go from here with soaker hoses placed in your beds connected to your rain barrel just by turning it on while your doing other work. Soil is a beginning and amending the top 6" with compost/manure and garden soil in a raised bed is a start. Every year after that you are adding to the raised beds with soil from your homemade compost bed. Find a farmer in the area near you that will be happy to sell or give you chicken or cow that you shovel up yourselves, and this way you know who and where your getting your manure. I've been in my Florida home almost 7 years and every year I'm amending my garden soil. I will take my pots and dump the dirt into a large tub, mix in with it some fresh garden soil, perlite and manure, and add back to my pot for a new season. I do tumeric and ginger in medium pots that are easy to dump and harvest in fall. Just pick up some organic from your local supermarket and plant. Ginger and tumeric have very good health benefits for you and even your pets. If you do mints, do them in pots or they will take over and spread. Good luck on this adventure of gardening. A garden needs a lot of love and TLC, and mother nature to rain and shine on it. Being in Florida, we have 2 growing seasons such as fall and spring. Summer is a time for soil to rest.

Save & wash out your milk jugs to fill with water then you can just load a bunch in wagon & don't have to worry about spilling water till you get to garden that's what I do.sometime I will pour the jug water into watering can & sometimes just water out of the gallon jug

Add peat moss and even potting soil. Nurseries have good soil , buy it by the bucket load. Also add the dirt you have tilled up.

I know you just bought a composter. You’ll be surprised how quickly that fills up (you’ll need to add leaves/browns to go with kitchen scraps)and then you’ll need to let it sit for awhile. Over the winter when your composter is full, you can bury your kitchen scraps directly in the garden. It disappears with a month or two and helps improve your soil as the worms and insects come to eat those scraps. No composting needed!

BTW Lettuce is considered a cool weather drop and it LOVES water

Have you ever started celery re-growth from the root of store bought celery? I cut up a stalk of celery to keep in my freezer. Then I put skewers through the root end, in a glass of water high enough to cover most of the root. It sprouted leaves in a few days . After a couple weeks I planted it in a pot. It's now maybe 4 or 5 inches tall.

Valerie you might want to wear gardening gloves. They will save your hands and fingernails. I wear them all the time when working outside. So does hubby, and our daughter and daughter-in-law. They both have gardens.
