The ice in the Arctic is disappearing. Melting Arctic ice means new economic opportunities: trade routes in the Arctic ocean, and access to natural resources. Because of this, the Arctic nations are now moving to expand their border claims. Russia has shown that it’s the most ambitious, using a potent combination of soft power and military buildup to advance its agenda. They’ve said the Arctic is rightfully theirs.

    Well that's not the whole truth. India has no history of invading foreign nations with the purpose of stealing their oil reserves, this credit goes to US. Besides, no other country boasts of being the father of world and interfere in someone's internal matters. So, if USA presents itself as the world leader then it should work on vital issues such as global warming. However, your president signed off the Paris agreement. Hats off to USA.

    This is a perfect example of why climate change won't be solved. When countries can gain so much from it, why would they do anything against it? Especially Russia, who is highly dependent on fossil fuels, and now it can get access to up to 30% of the reserves

  • @SR-mi6jf

    @SR-mi6jf

    spinakker14 it also perfectly explains why we could solve it. Instead of competing with Russia for oil and gas resources we could just switch to renewable energy. Of course this wouldn't solve the need for arctic transportation

  • @spinakker14

    Steven Rosas well, the US just withdrew from the Paris agreement, and since the fossil fuel lobby is still very powerful there, I doubt they will do any meaningful change soon. But you are right. Renewable energy is the solution, and I'm hoping countries make the transition to it soon

    Countries in the Arctic region produce relatively little carbon emissions, compared with US for example. Norway and Canada in particular seem to be doing more to cut on carbon emissions than most other countries. So no, it is still very much possible to solve climate change, given that we all would be rational about it.

  • @t.s.8893

    @t.s.8893

    True. Same for Canada! Climate change means new resources up north, easier trade routes (mentioned already), being a key-player in a new era, and a warmer climate for us (only Vancouver would be the major city to be affected by rising sea levels, the majority of Canadians won't be affected). I understand how seasons would go extreme, and I still hope we fight it, but Canada doesn't have much to complain about if it kept happening!

    cuz boi when that arctic ice completely melts, figuring how to burn all the fossil fuel on hand would be that last thing humanity will have in mind. remember that ice doesn't just melt in one place when it melts, it will melt across the globe; then that stuff in movies won't be fiction no more, so humanity better see the reality and not the oil fantasy.

    Yes! While I totally understand that Russia is showing a more aggressive look (because that's basically their trademark), I thought this went very easy on Canada which would benefit from this ocean at least as much as Russia. I'm a geologist living in Canada, and there's a lot of resources located in the arctic, ranging from gold, to diamond and oil. The cost of transportation from the arctic is very high, so only a few select deposit are actually economically viable. Having an access to the arctic ocean would be a game changer for the regions of Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. And don't go thinking that Canada is going to play nice and not get those resources even if they harm the environment, because they're currently extracting oil sands in Alberta ( Oil / Tar sands release a lot more CO2 into the atmosphere than traditional oil because they need much more energy to be processed).

    I'd go with you being skeptical. Not everything revolves around politics. It's the same as asking the people who went as west as they possibly could in the Gold Rush era if they considered that the US's political ambitions had motivated them. They'd just tell you that they had money on their mind. You should approach topics as being critical rather than skeptical. I know, tiny semantic difference - but it's pretty important - since being critical puts more emphasis in the complexity of truth.

    i would argue the opposite. I would argue that a more effective way to prevent problems in the arctic and to help deal with climate change in the arctic would be to prevent nations from claiming land at all and to treat the arctic more similarly to antarctica. The borders series has proven how dangerous and harmful broders can potentially be if not managed properly. Love the show tho

    Why is it anti-Russian? Seems to me it is just "hey Russia maybe don't do a hostile takeover of trade routes and oil reserves in the Arctic when you have no right to it okay thanks" give me a break, this is so far from propaganda. it's an honest look at geopolitics

    I think the word "propaganda" is overused and by that the definitions are fading. But I agree, the video doesn't really show the other sides in the debate over territorial claims in the Arctic.

    Annaclare S its a slightly biased one however. They have some biased inferences and statements subtly inplemented through some clips, a some parts of the interview, and some even the color coding of the maps. Russia is viewed as red, and red, in context of color imagery, means "evil" or "aggressive" and such. This video does seem kinda biased and portrays russia as some oil hungry nation willing to disturb the peaceful and almost pristine environment of the far north

    I agree, but here this episode feeled like propaganda document while not even mentoning us military activity in greenland and other arctic areas. If he would made this episode about arctic borders it would be much interesting and then bringing these strategic places with other military activities in whole ice sea area. But now its just scaring ppl who arent so interested in these stuff. I really like this serie, but this episode was simply bad propaganda video. Like Im interested in this kind places, but as i see this island is economically strategic place and there is no military activities. Also according this doc they got agreement with 45 countries. So does these 44 countries other countries have any activities on the island? What was point bringing that blonde with cold war propaganda and bringing obviously Russians military navy activities (tranings) in this episode while this navy don't have anything to do with this island. And if it would if would be huge conflict in area which would be in everyone's knowledge. And for balance making viewers believes that US dont have any military activities in whole arctic area? Anyway interesting place and would like in future that serie would bring in episodes both side o view in these conflict areas and try to be neutral in political questions. Like you can see what one point view causes in this comment section.. if this episode would be balanced i bet ppl wouldnt be arguing with their believes… Anyway have a nice day you all. Peace and love ,)

    They're doing it legitimately so far. They're taking the biggest initiative in the race for the north, and if they resort to aggresive action and policy in the end, the other nations can only blame themselves for not being prepared when it's been very clear (for decades now actually) that Russia has been building up their northern infrastrucures.
