It's a bit meaningless to call everyone above average body fat percentage obese, it should give them predictions about their health, not just a scary label. It's like calling everyone with above 100 IQ a genius.

Factors such as age, sex, ethnicity, and muscle mass can influence the relationship between BMI and body fat. Also, BMI does not distinguish between excess fat, muscle, or bone mass, nor does it provide any indication of the distribution of fat among individuals.

It's accurate. Asians tend to store body fat differently (visceral fat - in organs) from Westerners (subcutaneous fat - the visible fat you see under your skin), so a skinny looking Asian can be prone to all sorts of obesity-related diseases. Asians also have lower BMIs/weights in general. We use different BMI and medical ranges compared to Westerners. Asia has the highest % of obesity-related diseases like diabetes in the world, so it's important to be vigilant.

They're measuring the body fat percentage which is something we can't see with our naked eyes. Hence the result. It's normal and accurate.

This had me laughing so hard ! Please learn to be happier with yourself and healthy ! Society exerts pressure on in my opinion maintaining an all too thin appearance where some actually look sick. Obese is a nasty sounding word which is thrown around too often!

Since I'm not a doctor, I can't explain the exact reason, but I found out some info from the Korean Medical article site. Western standards for obesity are BMI 30 kg/㎡, but in Korean standards for obesity are BMI 25 kg/㎡. The reason why the standards are different is that Asians are more likely to have a red flag in their health than Westerners when their BMI is 25kg/m².

For asian people, being over 50 kilos is considered obese anyway lol. I know even slim people can have a high body fat, but it's wrong to use the term obese.

@@azas680Asian and Korean systems use a different BMI NOT for beauty standards (their governments and medical institutions aren't that stupid!) but because Asians get diseases like diabetes at much lower weights. It's partly to do with how Asians store visceral vs subctaneous fat differently from Westerners. When I moved to the UK I would bring a letter from my home country (Singapore) advising doctors of the different health metrics back home, for someone of my ethnicity.
