4:14 It was this exact video that got me to start opening up about self harm. One day, when I was home alone, I had the urge to hurt myself again, but I'd written down this number, and I called Samaritans. It just helped me get my feelings in order, figure out 'why?'. Then, a few months later, I got the courage to give my parents a letter telling them about it. And telling my parents has helped me a lot, because my parents knew to talk it through with me calmly. Sometimes, it's hard to know who you can talk to about something like self harm or suicidal thoughts, so helplines like Samaritans really make it easier. The anonymity helps a lot. If you don't want to talk over the phone, then you talk via email. They ask questions to help you start talking about your issues, and then they *listen* and, in all honesty, just having someone listen helps a lot.

I have memories of my best friend, and those themselves can make me tear up in happiness, but memory of specific moments can fade, and the photos of those moments make me just as happy as when I’m actually with them because it’s a reminder of those memories, it’s a refresher.

Red Wolf It's not shit what's shit is your uploads about butterflys and the fact that you give a organization/group that helps people turn their life around when their at there lowest is a bad name by saying their a shit group when their not. From what I can remember When I got kicked out of school for running out of school and attacking teachers and attacking my supposed to be friends if I didn't get my way and I all ways told myself that I should take my life because I was this crazy kid who was talented in boxing and football but was wasting it but being a crazy kid and before all this I was a good kid and I kept my shit together when my grandad who helped me with everything in life died in year 2 it was hard but when my second grandad died who I was very close to too and lived round the corner died I went from a good kid to a kid who couldn't handle life anymore I went to my behavioural school they sent me to cams for anger issues and self harm as on my first day at my new school I took my shoe laces out of my shoes and ran off and tried to hang myself but a teacher walked in and stopped me from taking my life as I was tightening the laces right round my neck. I went to that cams for 2 different visits the 1st one I didn't talk at all I just ignored the lady and answered yes and no if she or my mum asked a question but I took in all the things she said and I sort of just kept repeating it in my head then I realised that I was normal kid I just wanted to be this bad ass guy infront of people so I done that to show off then when I got in shit with people who were in gangs an thugs and I turned to self harm and attempting to take my life. Cams turned my life around I'm now back in a mainstream school getting ready for GCSE and I'm now back at it in footy playing fulltime and in 2 years time I'll be able to make a little money off it hopefully and push up to bigger and better clubs by putting the work in. Don't get me wrong I'm still far from perfect I still can loose my shit in seconds but my behaviour and the way I deal with shit is miles better than it was a good 5 6 years back. Anyway half the shit I told you about how cams is amazing will go through one ear and out the other ear to you. Life is not easy 👍

I'm in my 20s and I started online dating for the first time a couple of months ago. I suddenly realised I barely had any recent photos of me that weren't a) group photos, b) drunk/generally unflattering photos or c) me doing something where you can barely see my face. You scroll through profiles and you've just got endless photos of people's faces in bathroom mirrors and they've got no personality to them. Where are people's photos of them playing a musical instrument, finishing a race, up a mountain, scuba diving or whatever? Point is, when you do take a photo, make it a worthwhile one that captures a genuinely interesting part of your life. I'd much rather see a photo of someone finishing a marathon, even though they might be exhausted, than fifty selfies.

This means so much to me. I started to notice I had major depression when I was 12 and would cry most nights. I shared a room with my sister and she didn't notice. My ex stepdad told me once that suicidal people should die because it would thin the herd. I started self-harming at 14 and ended up in the hospital from a suicide attempt at 16. That's when people had to take notice. I'm nearly 20 and still deal with multiple mental health issues but I'm still here. I'm still here cause people around me were forced to see I had a real problem. I'm lucky my attempt failed but other people aren't that lucky. Talk to the people you love about mental health, don't ignore the signs and push away the stigma.

Thank you sir for shining a light on this problem/subject. I am a single dad of a daughter who used to cut herself. It took me a long time to understand, or at least try to, why she was doing it. Many things were the catalysts. Not just one. Over time she and I made an agreement; whenever she felt the urge or need to do self harm, she was to come talk to me or call me at work or wake me up no matter time of day. We'd sit for hours talking. Not about her cutting. But what was going on in her life. School, friends, boyfriend(s), etc. Eventually I came up with a plan. If she felt the urge and we spoke about it but it didn't ease her pain, I promised her I would get her a tattoo or piercing. In a years time she got one piercing and 3 tattoos. That was 7 years ago. She hasn't cut herself in that time and has 2 beautiful kids of her own. She's going to college, holding a job and has a great supportive boyfriend. All it takes is compassion, understanding and TIME. Give them all the time they need. They're so important.

Okay firstly, I want to say that it's amazing of him to bring attention to suicide and self-harming in the UK, and I, being depressed myself, appreciate it greatly. I know that he means well, and I'm sure he sympathises with all genders equally, but for the media to focus on female suicide and self-harming alone is a bit of a pisstake. I may just be a bit sensitive to this considering recent events where I have been insulted and mocked for cutting myself, but I'm sure what I say can be relatable to others. I've not done much research, but I have read that "Male suicide rates remain consistently higher than female rates across the UK and Republic of Ireland.", yet it seems that females are getting the majority of the attention. I mean sure, suicide prevention is bloody amazing and I'm so glad that many women and teenage girls are getting the help they need, and I have in fact seen male suicide awareness advertisements a few times. But regardless of the fact that male rates are higher than that of female rates, the females get the most attention, for some reason. (And yes, I'm aware that it's not just male and female, there are many genders that struggle with mental health, too, and I respect that.) I know I may sound like a dick for complaining about something as good as this, but I think you all get my point; I'm grateful that these mentally ill women and girls are getting the media attention they need and deserve, but I can't help but feel like all other genders are brushed aside, as if they're expected to be able to deal with it themselves. I mean recently, I was told at work that if I had more commonsense, I wouldn't be cutting myself. (Being told that absolutely destroyed me, it's so insensitive to say something like that.) And while I understand that self-harming isn't a good thing to do, it's not a case of 'commonsense', by any means whatsoever. But the funny thing is, if I were a female, I'd likely have been treated in the complete opposite manner, and it really fucking angers me. Because while many people, including me, are here everyday trying their best to fight off their urges, they're pushed away, because mainstream media only seems to focus on female suicides. I know I've rambled on quite a lot, but I know that some people feel the same way as I do. And to anyone out there who is suffering from mental illness, regardless of gender, race, or age, you're beautiful, and so incredibly strong for being alive right now. Stay at it and get the help you need, you'll get stronger. ❤❤

Gøner self-harm is quite possibly the worst thing one can do to themselves, no matter if male or female. The point of this video wasn’t to talk about suicide as a whole, but the lack of care over a 70% increase in teen girls self-harming. Teen self-harming doesn’t belong in the background, it needs to be at the forefront for everyone to see, and with male suicide/self-harm seemingly getting pushed into the spotlight as of late, the same should be done for female suicide/self-harm. This show is normally based around current events of the last week, so I wouldn’t say he’s neglecting male self-harm because of one episode. Also, would you be telling him to start talking about women if this video was actually about males? (I’m not hating or anything, it’s natural to fight for yourself to get your point across to the majority, instead of fighting for “the other side”) I mean maybe you’re not English but in England/UK we’ve seemed to have an influx of knowledge about male suicide/self-harm so I’d have to disagree with you saying the media is focusing on females over males. Nevertheless, hope you start feeling better mate!

+Celestial Demon I didn't say it wasn't highly used, I said it isn't social media. The key element of social media is socialisation, it's in the name. Although youtube can be used to socialise, as we are right now, the focus is on audiences watching large content creators. When a youtuber uploads a video and a million people watch it, that's not a million people socialising with eachother, that's an audience consuming their media. Media consumption is not socialisation.

The mental health service is absolutely sh*t in this country. In Devon (where I am) we have to wait for up to 5 years before we can see someone and get a diagnosis and treatment! It's my 17th birthday today and I've been suicidal since I was 8, but they just labelled me: "depression" and didn't do anything else. Now I'm on the list for an autism assessment because of my 'tantrums', but I'm pretty sure I don't have that either. They never take our actual selves into account. If they did, they would go on to assess whether or not I have a personality disorder like BPD or OCD (on which I have done a lot of research on and have talked to people on online support groups).

The is is more of a pet peeve. Sorry if in being incensitive. But if youve wanted to die for 9 years. Why aren't you dead? It's a good thing your not dead. It's more like you want to want to die if that makes sense. IM just retarded with words. 90 percent of people do survive depressions. But that doesn't mean "stfu attention whore". It's still a problem, everyone's different and just because theres a high success rate of surviving doesn't mean there's no chance of dieing. If the healthcare fails you, make your own one. Look for people online or offline. Find out what's keeping you alive and enhance that. If your feeling sad, make some noise and make it clear your not feeling ok. Most of all don't give up. Find out your problems and see what you can do about it. What makes you sad and why. Etc

Mental illness should absolutely be a conversation everyone is willing to have. Just _talking_ about it can save lives.

I don't remember why I started, there was bullying and stuff, but it became my coping mechanism for almost everything, so it was my go-to whenever I was feeling a heightened emotion, and it isn't healthy. Finding other things to replace it, as positive coping mechanisms is hard, and takes years, but its slowly working.

I see a lot of people in this comment section talking about what teenage boys go through too. As a 16 year old boy i agree but Russell is talking about the rise of self-harming in teenage girls. However, I do understand the frustration since the problems boys go through isn't mentioned as much, which is understandable since we mostly hide it. Honestly i think we've got use to it but there's definitely problems. Maybe it's not to the extent of what girls go through but in my generation i think there;s more pressure on boys since most girls care about good looking guys and we all have to be some "sexy" fuckboy like Justin Bieber or whatever. Also a lot of people being assholes to teenage girls nowadays are OTHER GIRLS. Us guys have to be good looking, a certain height and all other stupid shit. Nasty, misogynistic guys get the most attention as long as they're good looking mostly. Suicide rates are also *MUCH* higher for men and boys in the U.K and i think it's the same in the U.S.A too. I'm just a normal, average guy who's 5 foot 9 inches and wears glasses. I'm no fuckboy and I don't care for all this dumb shit that fuckboys and many girls like. I just like normal stuff, not anything stupid. I respect people unless they're an asshole. I'd very likely be seen as a freak though and a pervert for showing any slight emotion or respect towards a girl because I'm not good looking. I'm not saying it's not bad for girls but it's definitely a big problem for boys in my generation, trust me. A lot of the people doing it do girls these days are other girls who also do the same to boys. There's definitely many girls who contribute to this. If someone is being an asshole, ignore them or get back at them or report them. Block them on social media too. I've done it myself. As someone who believes in gender equality, I think we should look at both sides. No crazy feminists or MRAs (men's rights activists), let's all get together.

Thanks :)) another thing worth mentioning, when my school found out about my cutting, i was swarmed by about 10 girls all saying "show us your scars and we'll show you ours". I'm not sure if it's necessarily relevant but something i wanted to bring up anyway. I just find it interesting that there is a culture forming ( especially on social media ) -hollyoaks at the moment seems to be trying to discuss-

I've never really understood the mindset of those girls. I'm not ashamed of my scars and i'll happily walk around in short sleeves; if someone asks me a question, i'll awnser it but something about that situation Didn't sit right with me

This is going to sound shallow, but... Glasses are hot. And huge, muscled, guys are... sweaty? And not very comfy looking. I prefer a small sweetie-pie. I think most girls secretly do. Although I do stand corrected, I’m pretty sure there’s a type for everyone.

well, this is really cool and all, speaking about self harm but, can you also stress the fact that men and teenage boys can self harm too... its not something that only women and teenage girls can do.

Chinchilla 0 True, but since suicide rates among boys (ages 15-24) in the UK (wich is what he was talking about) are higher then those of girl it would have seemed fit to atleast say teens and not just girls, aye?
