It's Rubbish! - Gentle Giant Jumbo Indiana Jones figure review - Toy Polloi

Today I review the Gentle Gian Jumbo Indiana Jones action figure. It's not often that I say something is rubbish, but this is one of those times.

Regarding the soft sculpt of Indy's face, I'm reminded of Michael Keaton's line from Multiplicity about "a copy of a copy not being very sharp . . . . "

Toys have certainly gotten unreasonably expensive. A simple articulated 3.75" figure like GIJoe or Trek is over $23 here in Canada. That's nuts.

  • @Jason_Fisher

Definitely some disappointing quality issues there that shouldn’t be happening on such an expensive figure. It’s even more expensive over here in Australia than what you paid - it’s about the equivalent of £83 over here.

Sorry to hear that you're disappointed with the Jumbo Indy. I received mine last week. I was looking forward to unpacking him. But now, I think I might just leave him in the packaging. As Sallah warned, "It is something that man was not meant to disturb."

I think toy quality has dropped dramatically over the last 10 or so years. Buying modern toys to open is a dice roll where the odds are not in the consumers favour.

@@Rocket1377 very true. They have always been consistent. I probably should have been clearer and said I was referring to action figures, particularly those with higher price points which are supposed to suggest quality but very often don't. I purchased a McFarlane DC figure whose leg fell off out of the packet, a Marvel Legends figure whose arm snapped off out of the packet. I don't collect many modern toys and already have 2 examples out of a handful where I got breakages straight away. Not to mention the number of instances I have seen paint errors as well. It's not like I'm buying a knock off toy.

Ever since Diamond bought Gentle Giant the quality of their products went way down. They couldn’t even match the correct colors of the Kenner figure. Here’s a tip on paint: I spray all of my jumbos with a clear coat of floor wax. I used Pledge but since it was discontinued you can use Floor Shine. It gives it a semi-gloss finish like the vintage Kenner figures and protects the paint from chipping.

The Jumbo figures, whether this one or the "Star Wars" Jumbos, aren't meant to be moved and played with, really; they're just cool-looking kitschy pieces to display. Does GG overprice the Jumbos a bit? Sure, I think $50 or $60 would be more fair than $80. But I'm totally happy with my Indy Jumbo and the few Jumbo SW figs I have, as they look great on display. Nobody's actually going to be moving and playing with these things as "toys" and they're not meant to be, so "articulation" just isn't an issue for me. He looks great on my desk and that's all I wanted.

  • @NostalgiaRant

It doesn't seem to be if they "customized" the figure to be up-scaled, he has the same qualities as the original 3-inch figure, but those don't quite translate into that scale, they should have used thinner plastic, and sturdier paint, and maybe loosened up the joints so he doesn't loose his paint every movement he makes.

I have had (and sold on) several Gentle Giant statues and had the Jumbo Stormtrooper at one point. They are not a toy company but a statue/collectible producer who do some design work for figure companies. This and the Star Wars line are both collectibles rather than toys and not really for anything other than display. This doesn’t forgive the QC issues, and personally speaking I thought this line is a bit pointless, but they do state ‘this is not a toy and articulation is for display purposes only’ on the packaging.

Lots of paint scuffing when you articulate them and have them hold their weapons, no pose ability with the legs, soft sculpts with emphasized mold lines, and tight joints. Those are consistent features of the line. Definitely not a toy and not meant to be handled much. It’s just supersized nostalgia. I suppose Gentle Giant would argue that the figure was a display piece and the articulation wasn't really meant to be used. Which is fair enough, but then you get into the question of whether - if it's only meant to be kept in the package and displayed - they'd have been better not to have any articulation at all and just present it as a statue, which would presumanly have lowered the price significantly since there'd be no need to mould the pieces individually and pay someone to assemble them. When Kotabukiya did a line of non-articulated large scale Super Powers figures they retailed for about 40 or 50 quid rather than the £80 this goes for on Gentle Giant's website.

I don't think this is a toy...It's a collectable which is a wholly different thing. No one will have posed it during design and production because they know that 99.9% of these will never be taken out of the packet as they will be bought by 'in box' collectors who want to 'preserve the value' of the item. They don't need to produce quality as long as it looks ok in the packaging. As to the price.... well that has nothing to do with the quality of the product either and has everything to do with what the manufacturer thinks it can get away with charging!!!

@@Rocket1377 Gentle Giant don't produce toys. They make collectables, generally statues and busts. These Jumbo figures aren't designed to be played with, they are designed to be displayed.

Thats a lot of money considering you could buy a Gundam figure for that price and those are engineering marvels and super high quality. Ill buy it if it trickles down to an Ollie’s store and sells for $15 😂

If it's over 3.75 it's a doll and no longer an action figure.
