It's Raining Pigeons (After the Falcon Attack)

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

I started this season with the biggest winter team ever. Not the best thing but... ah well, will see how they behave as a flock. For now this was one of the most serious marathon chases of the falcon and it broke the 96 pigeons flock into pieces. I love pigeons dropping from the sky like an avalanche, this is why I like arrivals from short distance races especially when I have a big racing team. Now thanks to the falcon and this big winter team I managed to see the crazy arrivals in off-season. Fortunately it missed this time which I couldn't believe, since I have a lot of inexperienced young birds (~70) and only 20 experienced old birds from the previous winter seasons. Of course they were lucky because the hawks weren't around, otherwise they would have caught some of the birds dropping from the sky, especially the ones hiding in the trees.

    @@longinlewandowski7019 Hello from Romania. Yes, the falcon is very powerful and fit, it can chase the pigeons for minutes but I prefer it instead of hawks. I think the hawks are more dangerous because they attack at ground level. I would have lost some pigeons this time after they escaped the falcon, if the hawks were in the area.

    @@caiicahst7291 I rarely saw hawks taking pigeons at height all these years (witnessed hundreds if not thousands of attacks), and the few ones they got were either very young, sick or not fit pigeons. I lost a lot more to falcons, the higher they go the more chances for the falcon. But the most pigeons I lost all these years were to hawks at ground level. The ugliest losses are when they escape the falcon and the hawk gets them at the ground level...

    @@Pigeonmaniacom the hawk warms up at a height, he does not try to hook the victim. His goal is to pursue from a great height. And then, closer to the ground, he begins to act in full force. But the fact that it starts attacking victims at high altitude, in no way inferior to falcons, suggests that pigeons at altitude cannot hide from a hawk. In the same way, he catches jackdaws - the beginning of the attack is very high, and the end is above the tree, and if a jackdaw or a rook hides in a tree, a hawk jumps right along the branches behind it))

    13:46 - 14:10 I liked the actions of this white-winged (if I'm not mistaken, female). She has an easy flight, and she was ready for a sudden attack of a hawk by taking the right stance, unlike the rest of the pigeons, who turned their backs in search of the entrance to the dovecote. Such pigeons have every chance to start on time in case of a sudden attack by a hawk, the main thing is that it would not be a sparrowhawk

  • @Pigeonmaniacom

    @Pigeonmaniacom

    Жыл бұрын

    Not sure if it is a female, those are very young late breds. Indeed, the other one going for the entrance is bigger and less agile, and was already hurt by the falcon in the past. The white-winged did the right thing there because she wasn't tired and comes from a more calm family, but when the hawk hides in the trees behind and attacks several times in a row and it gets late in the evening... I kinda prefer the pigeons that go for the entrance because the others risk to stay up in the night which is risky.

    Homer, on the loft the hawk could see them, I think this is the main reason, they feel more protected on the landing board. This is why I replaced the sputniks, they had a hard time landing on them in high speed or more birds at once. There are metal sheets on the loft.

    Hi there, amazing video. it could be also a young female falcon, not experienced enough, when you mentioned that surprisingly she didn't catch anything although there were many inexperienced birds in the flock. I can recognise it here, when old female falcon hunts, it is usually lethal as she comes much from above (usually super speed ambush fall from clouds and has one, max. 3 attempts) the pigeons and when she hits usually a bird (I see the attack itself rarely, but I would guess she can have some 70% success rate), after her attack the pigeon is either gone or hurt. And I can immediately recognise in Autumn, when a young falcon is attacking, it looks similarly like on this video. Btw, have you got a similar experience which I have here, that falcon preferably hunts on red -coloured pigeons? I used to have some colony of the red birds in the loft, and after falcons appeared in my area (close to Prague, Czechia, eco-activists started to put artificial nesting spots on industrial chimneys and falcons started to multiply themselves very much in recent years - in 20km surroundings there are 3 such falcon nests in my area), eventually I have no red birds on the loft and on purpose I've got rid of all red breeding pairs, as none of their descendants managed to survive till their adultness.

  • @Pigeonmaniacom

    @Pigeonmaniacom

    Nice comment. I am not sure about the age of the falcons, but they do the same attacks in mid winter and sometimes the male feeds the female and then he goes to catch another pigeon. Sometimes the females comes crying when he missed the prey and they do a "fight-play". I doubt they feed the chicks so late in mid winter. I have at least two local falcon pairs and they fight each other which sometimes saves my pigeons. I witnessed the max speed diving from the clouds you mention, but they do it very rarely, I don't know why but I am happy it is like this. They usually do it in dark days. I look at the flock flying, I close my eyes for a second and then the falcon is carrying a pigeon. It is perplexing. They only did this twice these years. They tried again on a sunny day but missed, I just saw the flock "exploding" and then the falcon went between them like a meteorite. I don't see a preference for reds and I do have reds surviving the entire season, it just depends on genetics, fitness and health. I have a red pied female that survived 3 winter seasons already, you can see it in previous videos. I just think it is harder to find good red racing pigeons because most people like them for their color and usually when you select racers for beauty vs performance, you lose the performance.

    A lot of unnecessary moves and losing attacks, he can starve to death like that. By the way, no matter how much they write about the high speed of diving up to 300 km / h. A peregrine falcon chasing pigeons never demonstrates such speed. Which once again destroys the myth of his power. There is a predator that has demonstrated a diving speed of at least 200 km/h or more, this is Hieraaetus pennatus. Which is now massively conquering Northern Eurasia. Thanks for the video, like!

  • @Pigeonmaniacom

    @Pigeonmaniacom

    I think that diving with record speed is a bit different, it couldn't do it here where it was chasing the pigeon closely, mostly in a horizontal line. It needs to be very high in the sky and far away from the pigeons so that he can gain that max speed in a very long vertical dive. I only witnessed that 2-3 times all these years, I don't know why they don't do it more often or if that was another falcon. And I am glad they don't do that often! :)) I assumed it had that record speed because it left me speechless: I was watching the flock flying, no falcon visible anywhere, they were calm, and in a blink of an eye, when I opened my eyes the falcon was already carrying a pigeon. It was perplexing. I couldn't believe my eyes. There were two such successful cases and once it missed, I just saw the flock "explode" 1-2 seconds before the impact, and then the falcon just went through the middle of the flock with insane speed. I think the bigger the flock and with more experienced birds, the more chances to see him early even in extreme speed diving.

    @@Pigeonmaniacom Yes, these are rare maneuvers. They are rare not because they are difficult, but because they do not bring success. Pigeons have a huge field of view, and it is difficult to approach them unnoticed, even at high speed. This trump card of the falcon was highly appreciated by the BBC and other scientific channels, but it turned out to be a lie. I began to see more often the huge diving speed of "Hieraaetus pennatus", he does not know how to chase the victim like a hawk or a falcon, all his hopes for a successful capture of the victim are just a high-speed dive. It's a pity that I didn't manage to capture these eagle swoops, such moments are very difficult to shoot on camera.
