"IT'S JUST A KIDS SHOW. STOP CRITIQUING IT"

A common thing you will be told when critiquing Ninjago is that "its just a kids show!" Here's why that's a bad argument to me.

What people who make this argument fail to realize is just because something is a kids show, doesn't mean it can't be held accountable for its faults. If we were supposed to think of these shows as nothing to take seriously or be captivated by, then I don't think people would have been following or discussing shows like SvtFoE, Amphibia, or Steven Universe while they were airing.

This can get really bad when it comes to even those "baby" shows, it's like saying bluey is just as bad as peppa pig, bluey teaches valuable lessons to kids and even adults can learn from the parents, while peppa pig is a show about two brats who scream and get everything they want through whining and begging

@@lethalbloom2147 I agree. Adults like shows like Bluey because they don't follow the typical children's show stuff. Sure, they're kids shows, but that doesn't mean we should view them the same way we view shows like Puppy Dog Pals or PJ Masks. If we were to go by that logic, a lot of educational children's media wouldn't even exist, or at least be so relevant.

I totally agree. I literally just had a hour long conversation with my mom about this exact topic. The whole "it's just a kid's show" argument does NOT excuse poor quality. Kid's media is extremely important. What your kid's mind consumes matters. These shows help teach children about many important things, such as good morals, healthy relationships, and even lose and grief. These might be kid's shows, but that just makes it even more important that they tell meaningful storys. I'm 21 years old, and Ninjago has been part of my life since I was 9. And even at that young age, I could tell this show cared about its young audience. I never felt like it was talking down to me. it has taught me so much over the years, And it continues teaching me till this day. And I believe that's the type of impact all kid's shows should have.

Ah yes, the “it’s a kids show” argument. One of my favorite arguments to argue against. Because guess what, kids show is not an excuse to ignore character assassinations, unsatisfying character arcs, and wasting screentime. And this is not just coming from Crystalized. I’m talking about other shows that would have these issues, especially a certain show🐞 that gets the most criticized. If people try to argue kids show isn’t allowed to be in-depth and have deep storytelling that appeals to everyone, I would show them Bluey and My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic (mostly the latter bc I watched that more). Also a really good point on kids emotionally connecting with the characters. I don't think it makes sense to expect all kids media to be silly mindless fun because that's all kids need - for starters, people forget that for a lot of kids life isn't so fun. Too many children deal with stuff like bullying, poverty, abuse, even war etc. and having well thought out, meaningful emotional journeys within a show can help them process their own world and feelings.

The writers clearly want the show to be enjoyed by older long time fans too since they went darker in the Oni trilogy and they've upped the drama and spectacle. So it's only fair that the writing holds up for an all - ages show too. The show takes itself more seriously now but when it comes to the important parts in the writing, it just flips back to "only a kids show". You can't have it both ways

Agreed, death and consequences are natural things that can happen. If they don’t even acknowledge death, then kids will think that characters (people) will never die and live forever. And the fact that the ending of Crystalized had zero consequences at all is very beyond me, like the things Harumi did to Lloyd time, and time, and time again, but he forgave her after what she had done and let her go (but doesn’t even forgave Garmadon just because he’s an Oni), no consequences?!?!? That is very unrealistic. And overtime, I’m starting to not like Lloyd or Harumi as a character anymore (especially Lloyd with his character and personality all over the place, I officially gave up his whole storyline all together.)

The book series' author, Wilbert Awdry, said that when he wrote the stories, he wasn't just writing to children. She thought I was going to grow out of it but I still love it and buy sets because you DON'T HAVE TO grow out of it. And the reason is that Ninjago is an incredibly deep story with many layers and amazing lessons about life. So good, that even as an (adult-)teenager or adult you can still relate to them. And ofcourse as a child you watch things differently, I for real was around S8 just like Go Lloyd beat your father and that shit Harumi! But how older you grow how more different layers you discover and how more you realize what a masterpiece it is for teaching children AND adults importants lessons that change your view at the world.

I know this is unrelated, but it’s something that came to my mind the other day and I’d like to share it. It’s about how Nya could have been brought back in Crystalized The real Nya is still merged with the endless sea, and the other ninja are grieving over her. Just like in the actual season, they spend the first few episodes figuring out how to bring her back. But ultimately, they can’t, because the sea transformation truly can’t be undone. Somewhere around episodes 4 and 6, Nya randomly comes back in her human form. She becomes Samurai X again like in the actual show. However there is a catch. Upon her return, she is unable to process or hear words like Water, Wojira, Kalmar etc. On top of that, she doesn’t remember what her powers were when she was an elemental master and has no memory of Seabound. Halfway through the season, it is revealed that this new Nya was a nindroid, created by Pixal, Kai and Jay. The loss had hit the ninja team so hard to the point were, if they couldn’t bring Nya back, they would make a new Nya just like the old one. With Pixal’s tech skills and Kai and Jay’s extensive knowledge on Nya, they were able to recreate her. The reason why the new Nya couldn’t register words relating to Seabound’s finale, is because Pixal programmed her to block out all those things. That way, nothing could ever remind her of the incident. There is a scene were Pixal confesses to new Nya about her robot identity. She is told that she is just like the old Nya, but with a robotic exterior. This greatly upsets her, and leads to her telling Pixal that she and Nya are not the same. After an talk between new Nya and Pixal, they decide to inform everyone about new Nya’s robot identity. From there new Nya ditches her Nya facade and creates her own identity. Everyone approves this decision and helps her become her own person. Later in the season, new Nya changes her name. Then in Ninjago United, she is recast with a completely different voice, and later gets redesigned. I think this would have been a great way to bring Nya back and keep her in the ocean at the same time. The inspiration for this theoretical arc, was the Bowbot story from Inanimate Insanity III, where something very similar happens.

@@gavtuc45 wow, kind of a bit of a story writer, but if I were to bring Nya back somehow or someways… the best bet was that she appeared in the Crystalized final battle where she senses some interference with the sea folks, Kai, or Jay being in danger to help defend her friends and family. (While her memories are fading out of remembering her loved ones, her heart still remains the same as it was). The original concept was that Oni Lloyd took control of the balance, so Nya in her water form goes on one-on-one against Oni Lloyd (and the support of the Dragon Form Ninjas to aide her in the final fight). After the battle is over when Oni Lloyd was defeated, Nya’s role of protecting the sea folks and her family was fulfilled and goes back to the ocean, but Kai and Jay then say their final goodbyes once and for all, accepting that she’s now one with the ocean (and nothing can undo that). They both know they have to move on and that she will always be with them in spirit, always). Perhaps a Nya spinoff of some sort, I would title it: “Spirit of the Sea” or something like that

Rebooted was the first season to be released after my first significant diagnosis. I know what it's like to be taken somewhere and return home, as little as 6 weeks later, forever changed. I also want to point out that Possession and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness share many of the same themes.

You are completely right, the argument “It’s just a kids show” falls flat as there are a plethora of TV shows with kids as the direct audience that have just as good storytelling and plot as Ninjago that aren’t bad or stupid in any way.

There are a lot of shows that people get mad at for judging it saying it's just a kid show. The biggest one I've been hit for is Thomas which used to be so much better.

  • @LinkDing

For anything that's "made for kids" I always have the same stance. Kids aren't stupid, they can understand a lot more than people give them credit for. As a result shouldn't we put just as if not more effort into the stuff kids are watching than anything else? It's what inevitably will shape their adult selves so if we feed them crappy plots in shows with shit messages or just downright horrendous writing, what will the next generation look like? Definitely not good that's for sure. With good forms of fiction, it can help kids understand the world around them. Plus it also just gives them good taste. Edit: made this comment before fully watching the vid. Glad to see someone else that understands what others somehow don't for whatever baffling reason.

SpongeBob may be a kids comedy, but good comedy takes smart writing. If only toddlers are enjoying your jokes that’s not good comedy. SpongeBob(at least when me and my family watched it, Idk how it is how) has comedy that works and hits for both children and adults. I know this because my dad is nearly as major a SpongeBob fan as I am.

People make this same argument about star wars, marvel, pretty much anything that doesn't have explicitly adult themes. "Lol, it's just for kid's, Y U care so much". If you can point to part of it which is objectivly good, and part of it which is objectivly bad, i don't care if it's made for dogs.

Yes, it is a kids show, and this fact doesn't interfere that it is good for people regardless to their age. So instead of forgiving Ninjago's mistakes only because of this argument, it'd be better to do the opposite - always remember how good it always was despite this fact, so it could've go on the same way. I'd add something more - it'd be incredible if many studios would take a lesson from Ninjago and would try to make their stories good; after that it'd be a shame to call those "kids show" a waste of time and something not to take seriously

Yes, Ninjago it's meant for kids, but the only kind of show I would expect only children to watch are those for 4 years olds to help them learn the color names and to read and stuff. Kid shows, specially if they have good plots and characters, aren't only for kids, it just means they're children appropriate and can always potentially draw an older audience. The idea that kid shows like these can't be critized as the piece of media they are is laughable. Stories are stories and no matter what age demographic they target, they still have value. And despite Ninjago's flaws, it's still a great show and will always remain one of my favorites. ❤️

Ik this is a kids show but like, I honestly just see elite kids shows like ninjago as good entertainment while all the cussing, overly creepy and innapropriate stuff are all erased🤷‍♂. So idc if this is aimed towards preschoolers, if a season is trash, ima complain about it to myself or on the keyboard💀

People who say this are the same people who watch shows with painfully obvious, dumb and reused plots and jokes which is like 90% of "Adult" shows nowadays. "Kids" shows have some of the most creative and interesting stories and worlds. Take Regular show, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls and Avatar for example.
