Working on vehicle extrication for the fire academy and this was a fun demonstration of the chemistry in the car!! Thanks!!

Your seatbelt serves two purposes. One of which is to keep you in the correct position for the airbag so it's a soft pillow waiting for you instead of decking you. Wear your seatbelt.

Objection, I ascertained that hydrazine main gas that is formulated in airbags. Why then present on sodium azide. What would be the difference from a product perspective?

Big brain ascertain spaghetti stain. Hydrazine is a toxic volatile liquid. Sodium azide is a toxic solid pellet. From a product perspective, one is less likely to leak into your lap on the highway and poison everything in the car that has lungs.

Does anyone know What the balanced Chemical equation for the airbag deployment is? And also does it use a Catalyst And.... what type of chemical reaction it is ??? I’ve been trying to figure it out and I can’t please respond to my comment thanks!

just sending an electric current through it or heating it will make sodium azide decompose, there's no need for a catalyst

Can someone who know chemistry tell me what airbags used in the 90's? I was told it was a capsule of jet fuel because it would ignite so quickly, all I know for sure is it released a smoke when it went off that would burn your eyes.

@@reggiepalmer6157 True but the rates of sodium azide poisoning have gone up substantially in the last 30 years. Now they have that stuff in antigen tests. Not much only 0.0125% but they will be sending those to millions of homes and people tend to be stupid so its a matter of when some toddler eats the substance and gets sick. Not sure how much would cause problems but the BinaxNOW test kits say if you get it on your skin to wash thoroughly and if you have a reaction to call poison control. Problem is there is no known antidote for it and rat studies shown at 20mg a day cause necrosis of the brain along with other issues killing every one of them.
