If this was on film she would be a Mary sue. If this was a MMRPG or online fighting/adventure game she would be an exploiter/hacker. If she had to have most of those abilities I would say she was some government special weapon operative that is still master her powers. Oh what's s that? She mastered it already? Alright she ia gonna need some rivals and enemies that could go towe to toe withbbwrj with their own powers, or skills etc. And be able to defeat her so she can learn from her mistakes and defeat them later. maybe some of those villains could each have a key to something or just be able to teach her a thing or two. She could have family or friends be her guides and help her grow.

I feel bad for the animators. I don’t think they’re bad at their job, I think this is just straight up unfinished and someone at the top released it anyway. Explains the sloppy/straight up missing inbetweens but mostly decent keyframes. The one guy in the background moving especially convinces me. If it was just cheap they wouldn’t have animated him at all. I’m guessing they intended to animate all of them.

You can also tell things with the details like the quality shading and extra details specifically in Nora the character. There's a light soft lighting stylization to the best frames and some really nice detailing with solid proportions and giving some life to the character design of specifically Nora which is clearly the prime focus of the effort that did remain. You can see for example right at 9:25 for a few frames that character's face is drawn perfectly fine and then suddenly for two frames the lines cross and things go wonky. I think this was intended to be a pretty decently animated thing but suddenly there were either massive budget cuts mid-production, rushes, or just extremely poor planning.

6:55 Seriously, these storyboard/animation layouts are very well done. If I had only seen these drawings and the manga artwork, I would have thought that the anime probably turned out pretty well. That it turned out so badly means that the "animators" weren't working from these layouts or any preproduction artwork at all.

Poor Kenny. The beginning of the video sounds like he just unexpectedly survived a life-altering disaster.

I get that it’s really choppy, but the overall character animation isn’t bad at all. It’s surprisingly really decent at some parts. The facial expressions are really nice and from the clips shown, that alone helps me understand a large part of the scene. I’d say the budgeting was largely the problem.

4:30 - Psychic powers means she doesn't have to interact with objects directly. Stopping time means the animators can take a break while panning over a still frame. Teleportation lets them move her character cel without animating movement. In conclusion; this is the most genius anime ever produced.

As an animator working in an animation production, all i can say that the problem of this anime was either from production budget and project deadline. We have a saying "quick and dirty" which means meeting the deadline but sacrificing the quality.

The concept sketches and everything not animated actually looks kinda good in my opinion. I feel like whatever studio they hired to animate it messed up. There’s a job where people draw the frames that come in between the still poses that the main artists provide and I think that step in the production was just… completely left out

I recently rewatched this anime (out of a sick sense of fascination) at 2x speed, and I feel like I cracked the code, because it almost looks like mediocre animation at that speed. It's like they suddenly realized the animation they had wasn't enough to fill the run time, and they didn't have the money to do more animation, so they slowed it down to stretch out the run time and did the voice acting based on that.

Animators: Whats our budget? Production: ( reaches into pocket and pulls out change) This. Try not to spend it all.

The strange thing is... I kind of like the look of this terrible animation. It feels like a weirdly fluid slideshow. If someone where to make something like this for actually artistic reasons, while having a good matching style and esthetic and a good story, I think I would actually be into it. Imagine this gets remade in 2023, with solid plot, good music, retaining 80s fashion for the characters & settings, polishing up the artstyle, and fixing up everything else that is wrong with this

It’s as if there was only one person on the team. That he wrote it, directed it, drew it, etc. And he had a deadline coming up

It seems the core of the problem was the director was spending too much time fantasizing and not actually directing the anime. The animators were probably stuck inside while he was playing around with his waifu. What blows my mind is he was brave enough to film himself with a that hired cosplayer. Wonder where this guy is now?

Back in the day, the keyframes would be fully animated under the direct guidance of the director. To get the story flow and motion of characters/objects down to what the final video should be. This would then release the writing, director and audio staff to move onto another project while the bulk animators fill in the blanks. THIS is what we are seeing. We are seeing just the key motion frames. Usually the part that takes FOREVER and costs the most is all the bulk animations filling in the rest of the ~20/24 frames per second. They must have gotten to the point where they animated all the keyframes...and then ran out of budget or canceled or something. Why they released it anyway is what I am curious about lol

This reminds me of the 90s anime for the (mostly unknown to the west) Manga Violinist of Hameln. It was soo bad already because they changed the series tone (comedy manga super serious dramatic anime) but then they ran out of budget and the series became more "stills with sound" than animation. I'm surprised they let incomplete stuff go out but I guess it's better bad than a waste of time for the staff.

Hold on the first Nora OVA which was fully animated came out in February 1985 and then its sequel came out in November 1985. The entire project took 10 months, no wonder there's no 'tweens, they cut that crucial part of the animation production out. So what happened? Did they run out of money or have an impossible deadline or was it both?

I can't say I know what they were going for with Magical Labyrinth as the op for that series and then tone shifting so drastically into hard drama every episode, but that's a name I've only heard a few times in the last twenty years. The "stills with sound" problem was unfortunately there from episode one (Flute's 5-second still while she screams unconvincingly comes to mind), but I loved that show regardless.

the reason for the low frame rate is likely because it was supposed to be inbetweened at a later point (I assume by another studio) but they likely ran out of funds so they couldnt inbetween it , or atleast not fully so they just inbetweened the frames the director considered as being the most important.

No offense buddy but a product couldn't be sold doesn't mean it's a failure. Nor a shitty product being sold is success. The fact that the animation and storyline is just a laughing stock shows how cheap the effort is contributed for the passion.

As a little update, that ebay listing for the animation cell is gone, so either the owner decided it wasn't worth selling, or someone bought it. I hope someone bought it and appreciates the special moment in history they now own.

I think about the scene of Nora dancing with that Hobbit fella once a month or so and it never ceases to bring a smile to my face.

The way Nora is drawn reminds me of how Junji Ito draws women a bit. I like that aesthetic.

I like the way she's drawn as well. The still frames aren't that bad for the time. Honestly the guy in this video goes on about how this show has no animation for 15 minutes... I mean, we get it after 10 seconds, right? Obviously something went really wrong during the production of this title, they ran out of money or whatever, and they decided to release it unfinished. Not sure if that warrants labeling it as the worst anime ever. I'm personally more offended by titles that had a proper budget and were "finished" but bad nevertheless than by this.

Keep scrolling you can get back to comments from years ago it takes awhile but you can literally see how people’s comments have changed over time. Go watch an old video from like 2007 and find the old comments they are gold LOL
