But the song was actually released before Euro 96 when England were the hosts meaning football (the tournament) was coming home. Now we only say it as a joke and for a laugh: because even though we’ve only ever won one trophy, we make the joke in optimism that we will win a trophy this time. I don’t know why other countries get so bent out of shape over it.

Three Lions (aka 'it's coming home') is LITERALLY a song about how for a football fan, the majority of the time it's about losing and dreaming about winning, rather than expecting it.
